White Sox place C Soto on DL, recall Smith Veteran backstop lands on disabled list for second time with right elbow inflammation By Scott Merkin / MLB.com | @scottmerkin | May 10th, 2017 CHICAGO -- Kevan Smith didn't have to travel far to rejoin the White Sox in Chicago on Wednesday, as Triple-A Charlotte was playing a three-game series about three hours away in Indianapolis. "Yeah, what was it about two weeks, I guess? It doesn't really feel like I was gone," said the catcher, who replaced Geovany Soto on the White Sox active roster Wenesday for the second time this season. Soto was placed on the 10-day disabled list (retroactive to May 8) with right elbow inflammation. Soto was scratched from Tuesday's game and then was put on the disabled list by the team for the second time this season. He was previously on the DL from April 12-22 for the same malady. A very sharp pain in the back of his elbow started up again for Soto when he went to throw after stretching Tuesday. Surgery remains a possibility, the veteran catcher said. "It's a possibility," said Soto, who is batting .190 with three home runs and nine RBIs. "Kind of waiting on what the best route is for us and see what the doctor can tell me about what's going on. "Everything else I feel, it's there. But throwing, unfortunately, is what gets me sharply." Smith replaced Soto behind the plate in April. He is hitting .377 with 15 RBIs for Charlotte, and was 1-for-11 with one RBI in his earlier stint with the White Sox this season. "I love those guys down there [Charlotte] just as much as I love everybody up here," Smith said. "Good team chemistry down there and up here. It's an easy transition. I feel comfortable up here. It feels like I haven't missed a beat." Putnam cleared to throw White Sox right-hander Zach Putnam had a MRI Wednesday morning and was cleared to begin a throwing program as part of his injury rehab. Putnam, who has nine strikeouts with two hits and one run allowed over 8 2/3 innings this season, has been on the disabled list retroactive to April 23 with right elbow inflammation. "Everything is good," Putnam said. "Looks like there has been some healing that's taken place, and I think everybody is comfortable with the progress being made. "We aren't going to jump out there and get on the mound right away. Build up slow and hopefully be ready. We haven't discussed a specific timeline, but I'm hoping a week and a half, two weeks tops." Putnam planned to start playing catch on Thursday and wasn't sure if he would need an injury rehab assignment. He went through extensive physical therapy in Michigan while the team was on its last road trip. Anderson mourns the loss of close friend By Scott Merkin / MLB.com | @scottmerkin | May 10th, 2017 CHICAGO -- Branden Moss, the godfather to White Sox shortstop Tim Anderson's daughter and his close friend since shortly before high school, was tragically murdered Sunday morning in Tuscaloosa, Ala. According to a report from AL.com, the 23-year-old Moss went over to help a victim at a local establishment after the victim was part of a fight with four other people. Moss ended up talking to one of the other men involved in the fight while that man sat in his car in the parking lot, when another man not involved in the fight came up from behind and shot Moss several times. Moss was pronounced dead at a local hospital. Anderson sat out Sunday's game in Baltimore after receiving news of Moss' death. "That's definitely really bothering me, just because we had a bond. I know he's in a better place, but I continue to play, have fun and do it for him," said Anderson, who is the godfather to Moss' daughter. "He was more so a football guy. I was more so a basketball and baseball guy. "But we definitely had a very tight bond. He was very close to me, more so a brother. We're talking seven-plus years of a great relationship." Upon hearing the news, Anderson said his first reaction was a lot of tears followed by thoughts of the last conversation and last text messages the two had. Anderson put Moss' initials on his hat when he returned to action Tuesday. "Because he means a lot to me," Anderson said. "He was a special part of my life. I looked up to him, and we made each other better." The White Sox organization has supported Anderson through his struggles at the plate and through this personal situation. Anderson is a very open and honest individual, showing the human side of the baseball world in talking about his vast sorrow. "I like to be open, let them know we all are human," Anderson said. "It's OK to make mistakes. "We're not perfect just because we're playing baseball, and we're not perfect off the field either. That's something fans need to know, that we go through struggles just like they do. We're all human." White Sox place Geovany Soto on DL; recall Kevan Smith By Dan Hayes / CSN Chicago | May 10, 2017 Geovany Soto’s elbow issues have returned again and the veteran isn’t sure about his next step. Back on the 10-day disabled list for the second time this season, Soto wouldn’t rule out the possibility of surgery. The veteran catcher said that while the sharp pain caused by bone chips initially went away last month, it returned during Tuesday’s warmup. Soto was scratched on Tuesday and the White Sox recalled catcher Kevan Smith from Triple-A Charlotte on Wednesday to replace him. “Same kind of stuff in there, very sharp pain in the back of the elbow,” Soto said. “Hopefully we can talk to the doctor and see what’s going on. “(Surgery is) a possibility. Kind of waiting on what’s the best route for us and see what the doctor can tell me about what’s going on. “Everything else I feel it’s there. But throwing unfortunately is what gets me sharply.” Soto is hitting .190/.271/.405 with three home runs in 48 plate appearances this season. Omar Narvaez will handle the bulk of the duties, but Smith will undoubtedly receive playing time with Soto on the DL. Only 1-for-11 in the majors, Smith is hitting .377/.435/.491 with 15 RBIs for the Charlotte Knights. Smith said he’s been around the current pitching staff enough to feel comfortable in the big leagues. “It doesn't really feel like I was gone,” Smith said. “I love those guys down there just as much as I love everybody up here.
