Fiscal Impact of Suntrust Park and the Battery Atlanta on Cobb County
Fiscal Impact of SunTrust Park and The Battery Atlanta on Cobb County Prepared on behalf of: Copyright © 2018 All Rights Reserved Georgia Tech Research Corporation Atlanta, GA 30332 September 2018 Introduction Historically, professional sports stadiums were privately owned by the sports teams that played within them. Early exceptions to this were the Los Angeles Coliseum, Chicago’s Soldier Field, and Cleveland’s Municipal Stadium. However, all three of these facilities were built with the intention of attracting the Olympic Games.1 And then, in 1953, the Braves changed the paradigm when they re-located from Boston to Milwaukee to play in Milwaukee County Stadium which was built entirely with public funds.2 That move began the new modern era of publicly funded stadiums. Since 1953, hundreds of new sports facilities have been built across the country using billions of dollars of taxpayer money. Strategies used to justify these expenditures tend to fall into two categories – tangible economic benefits to the community and/or intangible social benefits including publicity, community self-esteem or improved “quality of life.”3 In fact, when employed by a local government, the author of this report – as many others have done before and since − used similar justifications around a new sports stadium in Gwinnett County.4 However, years of academic research into the subject suggests that the economic impact that accrues to a community solely from a new stadium – measured in terms of jobs and income − are usually inadequate to justify the public investment.5 Further, public financial benefits including new revenues from taxes and/or other fees rarely offset the public cost of the facility. -

The Newsletter of the Atlanta 400 Baseball Fan Club April 2021
The Newsletter of the Atlanta 400 Baseball Fan Club ________________________________________________________________________________ April 2021 By Dave Badertscher After 18 long months without “live” Braves baseball in Atlanta, more than 14,000 masked, socially distanced fans turned out for Opening Night at Truist Park on Friday, April 9. When the gates opened the stadium began filling to 33% capacity, our eyes drawn to “44” etched in center field as “real” fans replaced the cardboard cutouts of 2020. We eagerly anticipated a much needed in-person baseball experience. It was high time for a rematch of the opening series in Philly, which had not gone well for our guys. Charlie Morton vs. Zack Wheeler rebooted. Braves fans were pumped! What would Opening Night at a Braves game be without evoking memories of the franchise’s 50+ years relationship with the city of Atlanta and the South? A moving pregame ceremony paid tribute to the passing of Bill Bartholomay, Phil Niekro, Don Sutton, and Hank Aaron, highlighting their legendary contributions to the team, the game of baseball, and our community. Fan Club member Wayne Coleman (pictured bottom right) played “Amazing Grace” on bagpipes. Timothy Miller sang the “National Anthem.” Jets flew over. Fans stood and cheered. Braves Country at its best. The Tomahawk Times April 2021 Page 2 The Phillies brought an impressive, early 5-1 record to town. The pitching duel between Morton and Wheeler held until Ronald Acuna launched a 456 foot, two-run blast and the Braves scored three in the bottom of the 5th. The red-hot Acuna ending up going 4 for 5 and made a sensational run-saving catch in the 6th. -

Blueprint Midtown 3. ACTION PLAN Introduction
Blueprint Midtown 3. ACTION PLAN Introduction This document identifies Midtown’s goals, implementation strategies and specific action items that will ensure a rich diversity of land uses, vibrant street-level activity, quality building design, multimodal transportation accessibility and mobility, and engaging public spaces. Blueprint Midtown 3.0 is the most recent evolution of Midtown Alliance’s community driven plan that builds on Midtown’s fundamental strengths and makes strategic improvements to move the District from great to exceptional. It identifies both high priority projects that will be advanced in the next 10 years, as well as longer-term projects and initiatives that may take decades to achieve but require exploration now. Since 1997, policies laid out in Blueprint Midtown have guided public and private investment to create a clean, safe, and vibrant urban environment. The original plan established a community vision for Midtown that largely remains the same: a livable, walkable district in the heart of Atlanta; a place where people, business and culture converge to create a live-work-play community with a distinctive personality and a premium quality of life. Blueprint Midtown 3.0 builds on recent successes, incorporates previously completed studies and corridor plans, draws inspiration from other places and refines site-specific recommendations to reflect the changes that have occurred in the community since the original unveiling of Blueprint Midtown. Extensive community input conducted in 2016 involving more than 6,000 Midtown employers, property owners, residents, workers, visitors, public-sector partners, and subject-matter experts validates the Blueprint Midtown vision for an authentic urban experience. The Action Plan lives with a family of Blueprint Midtown 3.0 documents which also includes: Overview: Moving Forward with Blueprint Midtown 3.0, Midtown Character Areas Concept Plans (coming soon), Appendices: Project Plans and 5-Year Work Plan (coming soon). -

In July 2019, Major League Baseball publicly announced that the 2021 All-Star Game would be played in July 2021 at SunTrust Park (now named Truist Park), the home field of the Atlanta Braves in Cobb County, Georgia. The All-Star Game is a national attraction that generates extraordinary revenue for the host city. Businesses from mom-and-pop restaurants and bars to national hotel chains prepare years and months in advance for the event. Tables are reserved, hotel rooms are booked, events are planned, people are hired. Cobb County budgeted expenses of $2 million for improvements and municipal hiring to meet the expected influx of tourists and fans for the big event. Businesses in the Atlanta metro region stood to earn $100 million. Multiple municipalities were counting on millions more in tax revenues. 2. 2017 Cobb County Annual Report Chairman
2017 Cobb County Annual Report Chairman We are truly fortunate to live in a county with so many blessings. Our motto is “Cobb County Government – Expect the Best.” But this year we kicked it up a notch and also provided the best. Whether you are a resident, a business owner, a visitor or a student, the one thing you want to know about your local government is that we are carrying out a commitment to make this a county a choice destination. A place where everyone can safely work, live, play and pursue their dreams. Our Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs department plays an important role providing a high quality of life for families and individuals. In 2017, we gained more green-space and park land. The Board of Commissioners approved a bond funding ultimately nearly $27 million in green space. We have already purchased three parcels totaling nearly 60 acres and several more contracts have been approved and are under review. We have upgraded or are upgrading existing parks and have added Aviation Park to the parks inventory with Mabry Park coming online next year. Thanks to a grant by the Atlanta Regional Commission in December, the last uncompleted section of the West Atlanta Street Trail will be completed in 2020. The county will then be connected in the north at Town Center to the south at the Silver Comet Trail. From there you can keep riding to the Bob Callan Trail and the Chatta- hoochee. The inaugural season of the Atlanta Braves and the associated Battery Atlanta has exceeded revenue expectations in almost every category.
