Vigilante is inspired by the story of James and Johannah Donnelly, Irish immigrants who settled in Canada in the mid-nineteenth century. Their story has attracted many writers and historians over the years, but the facts remain elusive. What actually happened is sometimes sketchy or contradictory. There have been as many different versions of their tale as there have been writers who have told it. While it’s tempting to want to establish exactly what happened to the historical Donnellys, I wonder if it’s ever really possible, in the end, to know the full truth of anyone’s story? An event experienced by twenty different people will have as many different variations. Who’s to say which one is the truth? It’s been said that history is told by the victors, a reminder that what we call “history” is vulnerable to the biases of those who present it as fact. One thing that seems certain is that we’ll likely never know exactly what the Donnellys did, or what was done to them, or why it happened, or what they were actually like as people. The Donnellys of Vigilante are unapologetically imaginary. Their story is closer to a dream of what might have happened than a representation of the historical Donnellys — a “what if,” inspired by the fragments of historical fact that we have at our disposal: what if there were such a thing as ghosts? And what if those ghosts could speak? The story they might tell would be as much a love story as it would be a story of hate, a story told by those who have never had the chance to speak — the imaginary ghosts of the Donnelly boys themselves. As someone who is interested in exploring larger-than-life characters whose individual stories become collective ones that invite us to reflect upon who we are and the world we live in, I see the Donnellys as tragic antiheroes in a particularly modern myth. In an age when the politics of anger are on the rise, when vigilantism is re-surfacing as a viable alternative to the perceived failures of our judiciary systems, and acts of terror are increasingly normalized all over the world, Proud to support the their story feels ripe for retelling and full of fresh meaning and relevance nearly two Accessing the Arts program. hundred years after it first happened. jonathan christenson We’re working together with the Grand Theatre to help create a future we can all look forward to.

4972-0818 Here in 2019, we continue to keep the Donnellys alive through new creative reinterpretations and reimaginings, like Christenson’s Vigilante. So popular are the Donnellys that the stories are too numer- ous to name them all. There are books like Ray Fazakas’ The Donnelly Album (1977), which serves as an archival record of the family’s life in Lucan, while Thomas Kelley provides us with fictional accounts in The Black Donnellys (1954) and The Vengeance of the Black Donnellys (1962). There have been other plays too, such as James Reaney’s The Donnelly Trilogy (1974–75) and Ted Johns’ The Death of the Donnellys (1980), as well as a 2017 film titled Black Donnellys, and a 2007 nbc television series of the same name, which took inspiration from the real-life Donnellys to tell the story of an Irish-American family in present day New York, navigating the world OPPOSITE: WILL DONNELLY, 1874 (RAY FAZAKAS COLLECTION); JENNY DONNELLY. Who were the Orangemen, Whiteboys, and Blackfeet?

These terms are used throughout Vigilante, but they find their roots across the Atlantic. While many left Ireland for Canada, they did not leave behind the conflicts that had been established back in their homeland. Tensions between different Irish groups result from an intersection of religion and nationality: when Britain colonized Ireland, English Protestants settled in the Ulster region, now known as Northern Ireland. This established a powerful minority pop- ulation of Anglo-Irish Protestant landowners ruling over the majority population, the Irish Catholics. This power imbalance inevitably led to conflict between various groups. IRISH IMMIGRANT SHIP, 1850 THE IRISH IMMIGRANTS ABOARD SHIP TO NORTH AMERICA IN THE MID-19TH CENTURY. (BRIDGEMAN IMAGES).
