In a breathtaking moment of silliness, someone decided to install brand-new awnings CAN WE WHO on the windows of the recently abandoned Statler Hotel, so as not to offend any of the visiting GOP functionaries with the depressing urban financial realities of the day. Meanwhile, the members of Detroit band Was (Not Was) were engaging in a bold mu- sical experiment, splicing the genes of jazz, rock, R&B, and funk. With their futuristic grooves and intelligent (if twisted) lyrics, Was (Not Was) didn’t hide the local decay MAN TH E SHIP behind fake awnings. It gathered its ethnically diverse ranks, dressed the decay up in some fine threads and took it out dancing. The band’s ringleaders were Don Was (Donald Fagenson) and David Was (David Weiss). These brothers (of the soul variety) were in a good position to point out the absurdities of American life in the early ‘80s. Hailing from the scrubbed inner-ring De- OF STATE DENY troit suburb of Oak Park, the pair met in eighth grade, appropriately enough when they were both waiting in the principal’s office for discipline. The young friends cut their teeth listening to the homegrown sounds of Motown singles and the MC5.     “There’s some played harder, and there’s some played smarter, but nobody played like you.” The Life and Times of Stringband By Gary Cristall Gary Cristall wrote this essay in 2002 as the liner notes – possibly the world’s longest – for the Indispensable Stringband box set. Someone asked me if I had read them before publication. I said I had and I thought they were terrific. He was surprised. “You don’t come off very well,” he said. “I thought I did,” I said. To my ear, Gary’s account rings remarkably true. - Bob Bossin IF YOU HAD WANDERED through downtown Toronto on a summer’s evening in 1972, you might have wound up on the Yonge Street mall. A half dozen blocks of Toronto’s main thoroughfare had been closed to traffic that summer and turned into a cross between a European boulevard and an Arab souk. There were hippie jewellers and sellers of tie-dyed T-shirts. There was also a profusion of buskers. As you walked along, one quartet might have caught your ear. They were your typical folk band–banjo, guitar, fiddle, and washtub bass–played by three long-haired young men and a comely young woman with a beguiling voice. The banjo player exuded energy and chutzpah; the lanky fiddler sawed his violin with passion and skill. A dog of undetermined breed snoozed at their feet. They would play two or three hot tunes to gather a crowd and then the bass player would flip over his washtub to reveal the legend “Fight Muzak” painted on the bottom.

Don Was: “As adolescents, David and I would drive aimlessly around Detroit trying to pick-up girls but to be honest, we rarely scored and would vent our frustration by going back to David's basement, smoking a lot of pot, grabbing some instruments and turning the tape recorder on. Short of getting laid - which seemed out of the question at that point - writing and recording music was the coolest thing we could think of to do. Jump ahead fifteen years, we were both married with kids and living a couple thousand miles apart but would still get together to record. During one session in 1980, we stumbled on ‘Wheel Me Out’ and knew instantly that we’d landed on something radical, it was a clean amalgamation of our Detroit musical roots: jazz trumpeter Marcus Belgrave and MC5 guitarist Wayne Kramer wailing over a deep R&B dance groove and some beat poetry, there was nothing like it at the time. I'd been listening to a lot of stuff coming out on the ZE Records label - James White & The Blacks, material, Kid Creole – and it seemed like a good home for us. David was working as a jazz critic for the now-defunct Los Angeles Herald Examiner so we hatched a devious plan whereby he would call up Michael Zilkha (head of ZE) under the pretence of interviewing him for the paper.

He was almost forced off the road by a logging truck, all because of his beliefs. Last Wednesday, David Suzuki, dressed in a green suit, brown shirt and black shoes shared his thoughts and beliefs with a crowd of 1,300 at the University of Lethbridge. His talk on nature, its link with the econo­ my and how it will be affected in the millennium, was sold out a half hour before the show started, with over 200 people still wanting to to get in. Suzuki compared our approach to the year 2000 as "embarking on a suicidal road." In the driver's seat is the economy and we, the population, are headed for a brick wall in a car going 100 km/h, arguing about where we want to sit. The people who want to stop the car or veer its course are locked in the trunk. "If we hit the wall, we'll respond. But it's a hell of a lot harder to pick up the pieces after," said Suzuki, comparing the tragedy to that of Lady Diana's. In the past, people understood that we are deeply embedded in the natural world and used this to create our leg up on other species, technology. This growth of science, said Suzuki, "Has provided more insight which has changed the course of human history." Those born after 1950 have grown up in the largest period of growth and change.
