STS-123 MISSION SUMMARY MARCH 2008 ENDEAVOUR (STS-123) SpaceshuttleEndeavour’supcomingSTS123missionwillcarrytwonewcomponentstothe InternationalSpaceStation:thefirstsectionoftheJapanAerospaceExplorationAgency'sKibo laboratoryandtheCanadianSpaceAgency'stwoarmedroboticsystem,knownas. TheJapaneseExperimentLogisticsModulePressurizedSection,orELMPS,willholdexperi mentsamples,maintenancetoolsandotherspareitems.Dextrecanbeattachedtothesta tion’sroboticarmtohandlesmallercomponentstypicallyrequiringaspacewalkingastro naut.Atthetipofeacharmisa"hand"thatconsistsofretractablejawsusedtogripobjects. TheTileRepairAblatorDispenser,orTRAD,issimilartoacaulkgun.ThespacewalkerswilluseT RADtomixandsquirtouttheSTA54materialintoholesinseveraldemonstrationtiles.Therepaired sampleswillbereturnedtoEarthforextensivetesting. • Onflightday13,BehnkenandForemanwillmovetheOrbiterBoomSensorSystem,the50ft.exten sionoftheshuttle’sroboticarm,toatemporarylocationonthestation’smaintrussorbackbone.The OBSSwillbeleftonthestationbecauseshuttleDiscoverydoesn’thaveenoughroominitscargobay tocarryboththeboomandthelargeJapanesepressurizedmoduleontheSTS124mission.The spacewalkersalsowillinstallanewtrundlebearingassemblyinthestarboardSolarAlphaRotary Jointtoallowthejointtorotatealittlebitmoreifnecessary.ThatSARJhashadlimitedabilityforsev eralmonths,andmetallicdebrishasbeenfoundinsideit.Additionalspacewalktasksincludeinspect ingtheSARJandcollectingdebrissamples.

(PressKitp.31) • ThecomponentsofKibowillbeassembledinspaceonshuttlemissionsSTS123,STS124 andSTS127. • TheELMPS,ashortcylinder,willberelocatedtoitspermanentspotontopofKibo’sPres surizedModule,whichwillbedeliveredonSTS124. • TheCanadianSpecialPurposeDexterousManipulator,knownas“Dextre,”weighsapproximately 3400pounds.Itis12feethighand7.7feetwide.Eacharmextends11feet.
