Hey Toolbox Xtra!

Continuing with the theme for September - Encounters with Jesus- we are looking at two sisters who had Jesus round for Dinner…

Encounters with Jesus…

Have you ever had an encounter with Jesus? Maybe he’s spoken to you through a dream! Maybe, if you’ve ever been worshiping before, you’ve felt a nice warm tingle which is Jesus letting you know he is close by!

When Jesus was alive, he had many encounters, or significant meetings, with lots of people! Let’s have a look at one of those in our story today…

Sunday 20th September 2020 Reading and Questions! Grab a Bible and read from Luke 10: 38-42 :))

(HINT! Luke is the third book of the )

1. Why was Martha so frustrated with her sister Mary?

2. Why do you think Jesus backed Mary up?

3. What do you think Jesus meant/ was talking about when he said “just one thing is needed. Mary has chosen the right thing, and it will not be taken away from her”? Hanging out with Jesus is the most important bit…

Jesus wasn’t saying that people should never be kind and helpful like Martha was. Instead he was saying that what he really wanted Martha to do was sit down and be with him - just like Mary was. It wasn’t important to him that everything was perfect. Just that Martha and Mary spent quality time with him.

Why was it important for the sisters to sit with Jesus and listen to what he was saying?

How do you think this meeting with Jesus changed Mary and Martha? Did it change them in the same way?

What kind of things can we do for Jesus? How can we just sit and be with him? Challenge… Think of three different ways this week that you can spend time with Jesus!

Sunday 20th September 2020 Listening to Jesus was not the only big thing in this story with Martha and Mary….

Martha and Mary, knew that Jesus was unpopular at that time and they knew that they could get into trouble for being his friends, but they didn’t let that stop them from helping him and having him round to dinner.

In this clip from Narnia: “The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe” Mr Tumnus and The beavers were friends to the four Children, even though they knew that hanging out with them could get them into big trouble… Watch these clips and then have a think about the questions that follow…

1) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6awln9BQW54

2) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d5BDNGBg_Rk -Why had Mr Tumnus been arrested?

-Do you think he knew the risks when he met Lucy?

-Why was the beaver anxious to get to his dam with the children?

-What was the beaver risking by helping the children get to Aslan?

-Why was it worth it to him?

Like the beavers, Martha and Mary understood who Jesus was and why he was so important! Do you ever feel shy talking to your friends about Jesus because he can be a bit unpopular with people today?

Bellow is a prayer where we can ask God to help us be a bit more like Martha and Mary and be friends with Jesus even if other people don’t always like him. If you want to you can add you own prayer to the end of it too!

Dear God,

We thank you that you sent Jesus and that through his encounter with Martha and Mary you have shown us that we can come to you exactly how we are. Thank you that we don’t need to worry about having everything perfect before we hang out with you; you want to spend time with us anyway.

We pray that you help us to be confident in our relationship with Jesus even if he’s unpopular with other people and our friends don’t agree with it.

Amen
