The A’s are 11-2 against American League West competition and 2-8 against everyone else…are 1-6 in this 10-game stretch against the AL East (0-3 vs. Tampa Bay, 1-2 at Boston, 0-1 vs. Baltimore). Jarrod Parker has lost each of his first four decisions, which is the longest losing streak of his career (previous: 3, August 1-19, 2012). A’s starting pitchers are 5-8 with a 6.12 ERA (58 er in 85.1 ip) over the last 16 games…that includes 2-0 with a 1.80 ERA (4 er in 20.0 ip) in three starts by Bartolo Colón and 3-8 with a 7.44 ERA (54 er in 65.1 ip) by everyone else. Jed Lowrie (1 for 3, bb) has 31 hits and the Oakland record for most hits in the month of April is 33 (Stan Javier, 1994; Ben Grieve, 1998).     MEASURING BASEBALL’S HEARTBEAT: THE HIDDEN HARMS OF WEARABLE TECHNOLOGY TO PROFESSIONAL BALLPLAYERS † JOHN A. BALLETTA ABSTRACT After two-and-a-half decades of labor peace in Major League Baseball, storm clouds of a player strike are brewing as the operating Competitive Bargaining Agreement comes under fire. That same CBA includes Attachment 56, the most expansive allowance of wearable technology of the four major American professional sports. While the privacy of the athletes’ data might be the foremost concern under Attachment 56, there are a myriad of untapped arenas involving the use and dissemination of data from wearables, including issues in good-faith contracting and contract and trade negotiations. After situating the wearables provisions in the context of the CBA and describing the approved technologies, this Note will identify three infrequently discussed problems in Attachment 56 before positing ways around these concerns.     The Boston Red Sox Friday, June 16, 2017 * The Boston Globe Chris Sale brought his A game, but Red Sox didn’t bring bats Peter Abraham PHILADELPHIA — Chris Sale had a game he’ll never forget on Thursday night, for reasons good and ultimately bad. The Red Sox pitcher had the first extra-base hit of his career and ran the bases like a giraffe being chased by a lion, his long legs taking him to second base on a double in the eighth inning and then to third. But Sale was left stranded, then he allowed a run in the bottom of the inning as the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Red Sox, 1-0. The unlikely victory snapped an eight-game losing streak for the Phillies and was their first shutout of the season. The Sox failed to sweep the four-game, home-and-home interleague series. It was the sixth time the Sox have been blanked, matching all of last season. They managed only five hits, struck out 12 times, and were 1 for 8 with runners in scoring position. The Sox open a three-game series at Houston on Friday night. The 45-22 Astros have the best record in baseball. Sale (8-3) pitched his best game in several weeks. He allowed the one run on four hits and struck out 10 with one walk. It was the ninth time in 14 starts that Sale struck out 10 or more. “Just an outstanding performance all the way around,” Sox manager John Farrell said. “He personally did everything that he could to impact this game.” Sale got through seven innings with 93 pitches and took his turn at bat to start the eighth inning.

Fair¤ Revised March 2007 Abstract Age effects in baseball are estimated in this paper using a nonlinear xed- effects regression. The sample consists of all players who have played 10 or more full-time years in the major leagues between 1921 and 2004. Quadratic improvement is assumed up to a peak-performance age, which is estimated, and then quadratic decline after that, where the two quadratics need not be the same. Each player has his own constant term. The results show that aging effects are larger for pitchers than for batters and larger for baseball than for track and eld, running, and swimming events and for chess. There is some evidence that decline rates in baseball have decreased slightly in the more recent period, but they are still generally larger than those for the other events. There are 18 batters out of the sample of 441 whose performances in the second half of their careers noticeably exceed what the model predicts they should have been. All but 3 of these players played from 1990 on. The estimates from the xed-effects regressions can also be used to rank players. This ranking differs from the ranking using lifetime averages because it adjusts for the different ages at which players played. It is in effect an age-adjusted ranking.
