Distinguished Artists Concert Series TOWN OF OYSTER BAY JOSEPH SALADINO, TOWN SUPERVISOR 2017 -2018 Distinguished Artists Concert Series Co-Sponsoring Libraries Bethpage • Farmingdale • Hicksville • Locust Valley Jericho • Syosset • Plainview-Old Bethpage Message from Joseph Saladino Town Supervisor Dear Neighbor, The Town of Oyster Bay2017-2018 Distinguished Artists Concert series will, once again, offer a diverse season of musical and dance programs, which will kick off in October. Whether your taste runs from opera to pop, from jazz to classical, there is something for everyone. The concert season begins on Sunday, October 22, 2017 at the Jericho Public Library with Cross Island, an eclectic program for cello and piano. The concert series continues through Saturday, May 19, 2018 culminating with a performance from Naomi Zeitlin’s Cabaret. This season’s lineup also includes Vito Lombardo - Italian-American Vocalist, Conga’s homage to the music of Gloria Estefan and The Miami Sound Machine, Gilbert & Sullivan Light Opera Company of Long Island, The Feinberg Brothers - an authentic Bluegrass Band from Long Island, Glenn Crytzer’s All Stars performing vintage jazz and Vinny St. Marten and The Seeing Eye Dog Band, just to name a few. Together, with my fellow Town Board members, we are proud to provide residents with the very finest cultural and performing arts entertainment, all free of charge and held at conveniently located local libraries. During its pioneering era, Hollywood was dominated by women who occupied every aspect of the filmmaking process, both off and on screen; but the consolidation of the studio system in the 1920s and 1930s served to reduce the scope of opportunities for women working in off-screen roles. Off screen, a pattern of gendered employment was effectively established, one that continues to confine women to so-called “feminine” crafts such as scriptwriting and costume. Celebrated exceptions like Ida Lupino, Dorothy Arzner, Norah Ephron, Nancy Meyers, and Katherine Bigelow have found various ways to succeed as producers and directors in Hollywood’s continuing male-dominated culture. More typically, as recently as 2011, “women comprised only 18% of directors, executive producers, cinematographers and editors working on the top 250 domestic grossing films” (Lauzen 2012: 1). At the same time, on-screen representations came to be increasingly predicated on a gendered star system that privileges hetero-masculine desires, and are dominated by historically specific discourses of idealized and fetishized feminine beauty that, in turn, severely limit the number and types of roles available to women. As far back as 1973 Molly Haskell observed that the elision of beauty and youth that underpins Hollywood casting impacted upon the professional longevity of female stars, who, at the first visible signs of aging, were deemed “too old or over-ripe for a part,” except as a marginalized mother or older sister.

    TOTO Bio Few ensembles in the history of recorded music have individually or collectively had a larger imprint on pop culture than the members of TOTO. As individuals, the band members’ imprint can be heard on an astonishing 5000 albums that together amass a sales history of a HALF A BILLION albums. Amongst these recordings, NARAS applauded the performances with 225 Grammy nominations. Band members were South Park characters, while Family Guy did an entire episode on the band's hit "Africa." The study obtained children's same/different paired comparisons of eight concepts--me, my 'mother, an average woman, an average television woman, and four television characters (Bionic Woman, Cher,. Mary Tyler Moore, and Mrs. Walton),'and explored two models cf influence on salience scores, a television viewing and perceptions model and a sex role socialization model, using, the three comparison dimensions cf youth/vitality, reality, and competence. Fesults indicated that the ,variables of a sex-role socialization mddel are related to,children's use of these three dimensions for comparing real-life and television women and that cognitive variables cf children's own perceptions can be used in media effects studies. Mentioning the name Iggy Azalea most often elicits a couple responses: dim awareness that she’s some sort of artist or celebrity, or a groan and eye-roll. If you’re not familiar with the seemingly ubiquitous name, Billboard’s 2014 song of the summer, “Fancy,” came from the artist. “Fancy” opens with an ear-catching, austere electric guitar-strum. The song’s video pays homage to the 1995 movie “Clueless” starring actress Alicia Silverstone. Azalea is the star, replicating popular scenes from the film. About 12 seconds into the video, she stands in a classroom, dressed in main character Cher Horowitz’s iconic yellow plaid skirt set and raps, “First thing’s first, I’m the realest; drop this and let the whole world feel it; and I'm still in the murda bizness; I could hold you down, like I'm givin' lessons in physics; you should want a bad bitch like this; drop it low and pick it up just like this; cup of Ace, cup of Goose, cup of Cris; high heels, somethin' worth a half a ticket on my wrist.” That 20 seconds of braggadocio comes from a rapper who looks less like a bad bitch in the murder business and more like a lithe model.
