The Best Totally-Not-Planned 'Shockers'
Style Blog The best totally-not-planned ‘shockers’ in the history of the VMAs By Lavanya Ramanathan August 30 If you have watched a music video in the past decade, you probably did not watch it on MTV, a network now mostly stuck in a never-ending loop of episodes of “Teen Mom.” This fact does not stop MTV from continuing to hold the annual Video Music Awards, and it does not stop us from tuning in. Whereas this year’s Grammys were kind of depressing, we can count on the VMAs to be a slightly morally objectionable mess of good theater. (MTV has been boasting that it has pretty much handed over the keys to Miley Cyrus, this year’s host, after all.) [VMAs 2015 FAQ: Where to watch the show, who’s performing, red carpet details] Whether it’s “real” or not doesn’t matter. Each year, the VMAs deliver exactly one ugly, cringe-worthy and sometimes actually surprising event that imprints itself in our brains, never to be forgotten. Before Sunday’s show — and before Nicki Minaj probably delivers this year’s teachable moment — here are just a few of those memorable VMA shockers. 1984: Madonna sings about virginity in front of a blacktie audience It was the first VMAs, Bette Midler (who?) was co-hosting and the audience back then was a sea of tux-wearing stiffs. This is all-important scene-setting for a groundbreaking performance by young Madonna, who appeared on the top of an oversize wedding cake in what can only be described as head-to-toe Frederick’s of Hollywood. -
Statement on the Dangers of Guardianship in Response to Britney Spears’S Testimony
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: MEDIA CONTACT: Elizabeth Seaberry June 24, 2021 Communications Specialist Disability Rights Oregon Email: [email protected] Mobile: 503.444.0026 Statement on the dangers of guardianship in response to Britney Spears’s testimony Portland, Oregon—Today, Disability Rights Oregon Executive Director Jake Cornett issued the following statement in response to the Britney Spears’s testimony yesterday regarding her conservatorship. Statement from Jake Cornett, Executive Director, Disability Rights Oregon As Britney Spears’s case illustrates, one of the most restrictive things that can happen to a person is having a conservator or guardian be given the power to make crucial life decisions for them. Conservatorships or guardianships take away an individual’s right to make decisions about all aspects of their life, including where they live, what healthcare they get, and how they spend their time and money. Alarmingly, these enormous changes can be made while the person has little to no voice in the process or the chance to object. And conservatorships or guardianships can last a lifetime. Conservatorships and guardianships should be used as little as possible and truly as a last resort. Instead, less restrictive alternatives should be used, alternatives that allow a person to retain as much autonomy over their own life and independence as possible. Whether under conservatorship or guardianship or not, people with disabilities should have optimal freedom, independence, and the basic right to live the life that they choose -

Smoothing the Wrinkles Hollywood, “Successful Aging” and the New Visibility of Older Female Stars Josephine Dolan
Template: Royal A, Font: , Date: 07/09/2013; 3B2 version: 9.1.406/W Unicode (May 24 2007) (APS_OT) Dir: //integrafs1/kcg/2-Pagination/TandF/GEN_RAPS/ApplicationFiles/9780415527699.3d 31 Smoothing the wrinkles Hollywood, “successful aging” and the new visibility of older female stars Josephine Dolan For decades, feminist scholarship has consistently critiqued the patriarchal underpinnings of Hollywood’s relationship with women, in terms of both its industrial practices and its representational systems. During its pioneering era, Hollywood was dominated by women who occupied every aspect of the filmmaking process, both off and on screen; but the consolidation of the studio system in the 1920s and 1930s served to reduce the scope of opportunities for women working in off-screen roles. Off screen, a pattern of gendered employment was effectively established, one that continues to confine women to so-called “feminine” crafts such as scriptwriting and costume. Celebrated exceptions like Ida Lupino, Dorothy Arzner, Norah Ephron, Nancy Meyers, and Katherine Bigelow have found various ways to succeed as producers and directors in Hollywood’s continuing male-dominated culture. More typically, as recently as 2011, “women comprised only 18% of directors, executive producers, cinematographers and editors working on the top 250 domestic grossing films” (Lauzen 2012: 1). At the same time, on-screen representations came to be increasingly predicated on a gendered star system that privileges hetero-masculine desires, and are dominated by historically specific discourses of idealized and fetishized feminine beauty that, in turn, severely limit the number and types of roles available to women. As far back as 1973 Molly Haskell observed that the elision of beauty and youth that underpins Hollywood casting impacted upon the professional longevity of female stars, who, at the first visible signs of aging, were deemed “too old or over-ripe for a part,” except as a marginalized mother or older sister. -
Paul Rudd, Alicia Silverstone and More at 'Our Idiot Brother
Around Town: Paul Rudd, Alicia Silverstone and More at ‘Our Idiot Brother’ Screening Photo: Former Clueless co-stars Alicia Silverstone (left) and Paul Rudd (right) “I felt like I knew who this guy is, and just tried to wipe away all cynicism and judgment and everything else. It’s fun to play that kind of person,” Paul Rudd said of the stoner screw-up with a big heart he plays in Our Idiot Brother. Plus, there is the character’s goofy look. “There’s something about short-shorts and Crocs and a tank top and a big beard and hair,” he said with a laugh at the Cinema Society screening on Monday. “All of it together, where it wasn’t a hipster uniform, it was just wrong in all the right ways.” Rudd cleaned up nicely, clean-shaven, hair trimmed and sporting a John Varvatos suit, even though the screening was outdoors on the lawn at the MIMA Tower, a new residential building in Manhattan. (Should you be looking for an apartment with an outdoor screening room, this is the place.) The movie was shot in New York City, and co-star Steve Coogan is in town shooting another with Alexander Skarsgard. So what’s it like working with the True Blood heartthrob? “Yeah, when I walk down the street with him, people wolf-whistle,” Coogan said. “All the girls scream, and I wish it was for me, but it’s not.” Outside on the rooftop lawn, the late summer sunset provided the perfect excuse for a pre-screening cocktail party where guests nibbled finger foods and sipped Grey Goose cocktails—the movie couldn’t start until it got dark. -
