Since switching parties, Van Drew’s campaign has received over $500,000 in financial support for his campaign from corporate special interests and Republican groups and donors. He also stood by as his party tried to eliminate protections for preexisting conditions during the pandemic.

December 19th, 2019: Van Drew Announced He Was Joining The Republican Party. “Rep. , one of just three Democrats to vote against President ’s impeachment in the House of Representatives, will become a Republican, Trump announced Thursday. Van Drew’s flip was revealed at the White House less than one day after the House passed two articles of impeachment against Trump for abuse of power and obstruction of Congress. Trump, speaking to reporters in the Oval Office, delivered the ‘very big announcement’ that ‘Jeff will be joining the Republican Party.’ ‘This is just a better fit for me,’ Van Drew said, adding that Trump has his ‘undying support.’” [CNBC, 12/19/19]

A Trump-Allied PAC Spent $250,000 On Ads Supporting Van Drew A Week After He Switched Parties. “A week after the congressman and longtime Democrat defected to the GOP in an Oval Office meeting where he pledged his ‘undying support’ to President Donald Trump, the political apparatus of Van Drew’s new party is going to work for him. The president has endorsed Van Drew. A Trump-allied political action committee spent $250,000 on TV and digital ads supporting him. And the candidate who had formerly been seen as the Republican front-runner in the district is shedding establishment support. “ [Philadelphia Inquirer, 12/26/19]

According To His First Campaign Finance Filing After Switching Parties, Van Drew Raised $145,000 From Donors Using WinRed, Primarily From Out Of State Donors. “Trump’s support is also helping the congressman’s bottom line. Van Drew’s campaign filings show he’s starting to shed Democrats’ financial support and replace it with small-dollar Republican donations. He took in about $300,000 in individual contributions during the last quarter of 2019. Almost half — or about $145,000 — came from conservative donors using WinRed, a Republican fund-raising platform that processes online donations. Only 5% of WinRed donations came from New Jersey.” [Philadelphia Inquirer, 2/10/20]

The Trump Administration And Other Republican Elected Officials Filed A Lawsuit With The Supreme Court To Overturn The Affordable Care Act. “The Trump Administration asked the Supreme Court on June 25 to overturn the law known as Obamacare, joining a group of Republican attorneys general in arguing that Congress effectively made the ACA unconstitutional in 2017 when it zeroed out the individual mandate. The ACA has survived two previous Supreme Court challenges, including a 5-4 ruling upholding the law in 2012, when Chief Justice John Roberts ruled the individual mandate was constitutional under Congress’s power to levy taxes. Now the law faces an existential legal threat for the third time in its 10- year history. ‘The entire ACA thus must fall with the individual mandate,’ Solicitor General Noel Francisco wrote in the Administration’s brief. The Trump Administration’s challenge to the law comes as the coronavirus pandemic has left more than 120,000 Americans dead and thrown millions off the health care rolls due to lost jobs. If the court decides to overturn the law, the impact would ripple through nearly every part of the U.S. health system.” [Time, 6/29/20]

If The Lawsuit To Repeal The ACA “In The Middle Of An Unprecedented Pandemic” Succeeds, “More Than 135 Million People Would Lose Protections For Their Preexisting Conditions, Including Millions Of COVID-19 Survivors.” “With the death of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg just weeks before the Supreme Court will hear oral arguments in the latest health care repeal lawsuit, the fate of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) is completely uncertain. Repealing the ACA at any point since its passage would have been disastrous to the health and economic security of millions of Americans. But repealing the ACA in the middle of the COVID- 19 pandemic that has infected more than 7 million Americans and killed more than 200,000 Americans is morally reprehensible. More than 20 million people would lose their health coverage, and more than 135 million people would lose protections for their preexisting conditions, including millions of COVID-19 survivors. Repealing the ACA in the middle of an unprecedented pandemic would create chaos across the entire health care system; weaken the country’s public health and economy recovery; and rip affordable health care coverage from millions of people at a time when access to health care services is absolutely essential.” [Center for American Progress, 10/1/20]
