Banu Prakash Abstract Community service is a selfless act towards the betterment of the society we live in. A countable number of people greatly devote all of their time towards society in return for self- satisfaction and to witness the society prosper. Community service is optional, whereas in certain universities it is mandatory. Universities and high schools are integrating community service with educational program so students learn various qualities and skills on field that cannot be learnt by theory in a classroom setting. Attributes such as confidence, self-esteem, socialization, leadership, teamwork, sense of civic responsibilityand citizenship can be practiced and developed exceedingly before students step out of educational phase through community service. The researcher studied about students’ attitude, perception, experience and participation towards community service in six various universities in the city of Bangalore. The objectives of the study were to explore university students’ experience & participation and attitude and perception in community service, to find out if there are differences in experience & participation and attitude & perception towards community service of university students across demographics and to understand motivational as well as discouraging factors of students towards participating towards community service. “Attitude and Perception of University students towards Community Service” questionnaire was employed designed by James Abrokwah Stella, EfuaBedua Mensah & Paul Kwetey Teye.A total of 222 students were considered in the study through survey and interview modes. Inferential statistics, namely t-Test and ANOVA were used to analyse data. It was found that, students have moderate experience and participation towards community service and high level of attitude and perception towards the same. Students engaged in community service experienced holistic development, better exposed to the outer world and were happier for performing such activities. Further findings also include that studentsrequire motivation and therefore can expect a higher number of students turning out to volunteer. The researcher is hopeful there will be further research carried out to understand various other trends with respect to universities, faculties and students towards community service. Incorporating community service withacademicsrests with policy makers, high schools authorities and universities. Majority of research pertaining to community service have proved community service leaves no stone unturned considering the high stake of benefits it can reap in return for students and Julius Caesar indeed say “Experience is the teacher of all things”.
