ATTENDANCE STEADY AT BRITISH COURSES Attendance at British racecourses rose nearly 2% in 2013 to 5,679,941 from 5,581,615 in 2012--although average daily attendance fell by 2.6% to 3,972-- according to figures released by The Racecourse Association. Last year saw 1,430 fixtures staged across the country--61 more than in 2012, when a number of summer meetings were abandoned due to wet weather. The most attended racecourse was Ascot, which saw 572,603 patrons through the gate, up 0.40% from 2012. National Hunt racecourse Cheltenham was the next most visited with 409,436, although attendance there was down 8%. York and Newmarket Racecourses hosted 333,504 and 331,615 guests, respectively, both down 2.5%. Chester, with 283,594 visitors, was up 3%, while Doncaster was up 17% with 254,915 patrons. Racing maintained its position in the country as the second-most attended sporting event after football. AWith the weather in this country being hugely variable, making direct year-on-year comparisons is difficult, especially when conditions can have such an effect on advance and walk up ticket sales,@ said Stephen Atkin, Chief Executive of the RCA. AWe were pleased by the performance of customer-friendly bank holiday fixtures in 2013, which saw a rise in attendance of nearly 29,000. Atkin noted that Cheltenham and Ascot reduced capacity limits at their feature meetings last year, which impact their totals. AThe objective in both cases was to improve the customer experience, an aspect which has been a particular focus for racecourses this year,@ he explained. ADeloitte research and the annual audits by VisitEngland show that racecourses offer a great customer experience at very competitive pricing compared to other major sports. Both are positives that racecourses will be working hard to build on. Moreover, racecourse attendances have proved incredibly robust in the last five years, when set against the economic backdrop.@ Click here to share this story.

AMERICA TO BE CAPTAIN OF DERBY Jackson's trainer, Brett Crawford, sends out the odds-on favorite for the G1 Investec Cape Derby, Captain America (SAf) (Captain Al {SAf}). This big, handsome 3-year-old colt reeled off five consecutive victories before going down by a head to his stable companion, Elusive Gold (SAf) (Sail From Seattle), in the second of the Cape's classics: the G1 Cape Guineas. On that day, he set down into a stretch duel and eventually gained the upper hand on the much-vaunted Red Ray (SAf) (Western Winter), but did not have enough to retaliate to the late challenge of the winner. Though unquestionably a classy animal, there must be some concern over his stamina, his sire Captain Al being a strong influence of precocity and speed in South Africa. That shouldn't, however, be a concern for second favorite Power King (SAf) (Silvano {Ger}), who represents the same jockey and trainer combination as last year's winner Capetown Noir. Dean Kannemeyer's colt has been a few lengths short in his two prior starts in graded company, finishing fifth in both the G2 Selangor Cup and the G1 Cape Guineas. Both those attempts were over a mile, however, and he is sure to relish the increase in trip of the Derby. With not one of the horses having tried 2000 meters before, the race has an unpredictable feel to it, especially if the two favorites fail. The only other horse trading at single figures is the lightly raced Helderburg Blue (SAf) (Jet Master {SAf}). The sale-topping yearling of the Cape Premier Yearling Sale at R2.8 million (US$250,813) in 2012 has only had four starts and came off two victories before failing while heavily fancied in his prep for this race. It certainly wouldn't be a shock to see the colt regain his reputation here. Cont. p11

Her only losses have come when tried against the best colts in the country. This will be her first time competing in this race after her connections chose in the last two years to take a shot at the Met. Coming fresh off a 1 1/4-length victory in the G1 Maine Chance Paddock S. three weeks ago against much of the same opposition, she understandably comes into this race a short-priced favorite. However, a strong field lines up to face her. Mike de Kock sends out two British imports: second favorite Espumanti (GB) (Dansili {GB}), a Group 2 winner over this distance on her penultimate start, and Welwitschia (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}), a Group 1- winning sprinter who is the second-highest rated filly in the field. The biggest threat, however, may come from the 3-year-old In The Fast Lane (SAf) (Jet Master {SAf}). The G1 Cape Fillies Guineas winner lost her first start in four when a fast-finishing second behind Beach Beauty in the G1 Paddock S., and the young filly looks to have a bright future.
