FIORENTE TO RESUME SATURDAY Fiorente (Ire) (Monsun {Ger}), winner of last year=s G1 Melbourne Cup, has drawn post five of nine for Saturday=s G2 Peter Young S. at Caulfield, his first start since that Nov. 5 contest. Damien Oliver, aboard for the Melbourne Cup, will again partner the 6-year-old, and he voiced his confidence in the Gai Waterhouse trainee resuming over 1800 meters, which is outside the norm in Australia. AHe has come back really well. He's thriving," Oliver told Racing and Sports. "He seems to really like it down here in Melbourne. I don't think 1800 meters first-up will be a problem. I think it's a good trip for him." Fiorente had two exhibition gallops and a barrier trial, where he finished second (video), in Sydney before traveling to Melbourne, where he had an exhibition gallop at Flemington last Saturday. Also amongst the Peter Young lineup is 2012 Melbourne Cup winner Green Moon (Ire) (Montjeu {Ire}), who failed to hit the board in six outings last year, and last year=s G1 Sydney Cup winner Mourayan (Ire) (Alhaarth {Ire}). IRISH TRAINERS FACING DRUGS CHARGES Two National Hunt trainers based in Ireland have made headlines this week on account of charges brought by the Irish Department of Agriculture for the possession of banned substances in their yards. Philip Fenton faces a series of charges that were brought after his yard was inspected in early 2012. He was originally scheduled to appear in a Co. Tipperary court today, but the hearing has been postponed until after the Cheltenham Festival in March. The inspection in 2012 allegedly revealed anabolic steroids, including stanzolol, and legal antibiotics but without the required prescriptions, according to The Telegraph. A statement from the Irish Department of Agriculture read: ACharges are being brought under the Animal Remedies legislation, alleging offences relating to possession of animal remedies. A person who commits one of the offences listed above is liable on summary conviction to a fine not exceeding i5,000, or to a term of imprisonment not exceeding six months or to both." Trainer Pat Hughes was identified yesterday as the second conditioner facing such charges. He appeared in a Co. Carlow court Feb. 13, with the case adjourned until May 8. The Irish Department of Agriculture confirmed that Hughes is accused of having eight different banned substances in his possession, allegedly including anabolic steroids. Dennis Egan, Chief Executive of the Irish Turf Club, said the organization will monitor the proceedings before deciding on any action. "We are aware of the Pat Hughes case,@ Egan said. AWe are watching with interest and if anything comes out of it, we will take the appropriate action." AROUND THE WORLD THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 20, 2014
