Des sociétés productrices de chefs d’œuvre du cinéma vont naître avec Fox Film Corporation qui deviendra la 20th Century Fox, et les Warner Bros Studios fondés par les frères Warner. C'est peu après qu’apparaissent les premières grandes stars du cinéma américain, dont Charlie Chaplin. Dans les années 1930, les premières couleurs arrivent au cinéma (Le Magicien d'Oz, Autant en emporte le vent), ainsi que le glamour et son mythique « baiser hollywoodien ». Frankenstein, Les Lumières de la ville ou encore Citizen Kane sont des films emblématiques de cette période. Le cinéma américain dans les années 1950 est l’ère des grandes productions hollywoodiennes. Les westerns, péplums et comédies musicales sont très populaires. C’est l’époque du grand « American Dream » avec Marylin Monroe et son glamour, du classique « Chantons sous la pluie » ou des drive-in en plein air ! Les films d’épouvante comme Psychose, le lancement de Robert De Niro, Al Pacino ou Jack Nicholson, et l’élaboration du projet Star Wars de George Lucas se déroulent dans les années 1960. Les années 1970 voient également l'ascension de Steven Spielberg et des effets spéciaux plus spectaculaires. Les années 1970, 1980 et 1990 représentent quant à elles l’époque des blockbusters et des films de science-fiction (L'Odyssée de l'espace, Star Wars, E.T. l'extra-terrestre, Retour vers le futur, Jurassic Park…). Le thriller (Liaison fatale, Le silence des agneaux, Basic Instinct…) et les films d’action avec des acteurs emblématiques (Stallone, Chuck Norris, Jackie Chan, Bruce Willis, Van Damme…) connaissent également un grand succès. Les années 2000 sont ensuite marquées par les nouvelles technologies informatiques (Seigneur des anneaux, Star Wars, Harry Potter, la saga Pirates des Caraïbes, Avatar…). Le film Gladiator relance le genre du péplum et les films de super-héros tels que X-Men, Spider-Man ou Avengers montent en flèche !
