Gross and Dawn Rose. ix Acknowledgements Extent of a Dense Limestone Layer in the Upper Portion of the Biscayne Aquifer x Extent of a Dense Limestone Layer in the Upper Portion of the Biscayne Aquifer Introduction INTRODUCTION The objective of this work is to describe the extent and continuity of a shallow, dense limestone layer in the upper portion of the Biscayne Aquifer in the area of the Pennsuco Wetlands and part of Water Conservation Area 3B (WCA-3B) to the west. The information will be used to develop a model layer representing this stratum for simulation of surface water and groundwater interactions. The Pennsuco Wetlands is an area about 2 miles wide and 10 miles long, on the east side of Levee 30 in the northwest Miami-Dade County limestone mining area (Figure 1). To the west of Levee 30 is WCA-3B. The study area includes the Pennsuco Wetlands, as well as the eastern portion of WCA-3B, north to Canal 11 in Broward County and south to approximately 8 miles beyond Tamiami Trail. The eastward limit of the study area is the western edge of the mining lakes in northwest Miami-Dade County. The northwest boundary of the study area is Levee 67C. Three years of Snapper Creek Canal SW 70 Ave meetings, phone calls and great effort from the Chamber staff accomplished the organization and fund-raising for an extensive week-long design “charrette”. Palmetto Expressway Palmetto SW 72 Ave 72 SW Held in the first week of June 1998, the Downtown SW 88 St Kendall Charrette was the combination of a South Dixie Highway town meeting with an energetic design studio. Two local town planning firms, Dover, Kohl & Partners, and Duany Plater-Zyberk and Co., were jointly commissioned with facilitating and Metrorail drawing the community’s ideas from the public design sessions. Participants from the community included property owners, neighbors, business people, developers, elected officials, county planning staff and others. Over one hundred Above: The Downtown Kendall Charrette Master Plan and fifty individuals participated. The charrette began on a Friday evening with presentations by ChamberSOUTH and the design team. The following morning, design began as 100 people from the community, armed with markers and pencils, gathered around eight tables, rolled up their sleeves, and drew their ideas on big maps of the Dadeland- Datran area.     28390_00_cover.qxd 1/16/09 4:03 PM Page 1 Summary of Content The geologic past of Florida is mostly out of sight with its maximum elevation at only ~105 m (in the panhandle) and much of south Florida is virtually flat. The surface of Florida is dominated by subtle shorelines from previous sea-level high-stands, karst-generated lakes, and small river drainage basins What we see are modern geologic (and biologic) environments, some that are world famous such as the Everglades, the coral reefs, and the beaches. But, where did all of this come from? Does Florida have a geologic history other than the usual mantra about having been “derived from the sea”? If so, what events of the geologic past converged to produce the Florida we see today? Toanswer these questions, this module has two objectives: (1) to provide a rapid transit through geologic time to describe the key events of Florida’s past emphasizing processes, and (2) to present the high-profile modern geologic features in Florida that have made the State a world-class destination for visitors. About the Author Albert C. Hine is the Associate Dean and Professor in the College of Marine Science at the University of South Florida. He earned his A.B. from Dartmouth College; M.S. from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst; and Ph.D. from the University of South Carolina, Columbia—all in the geological sciences. Dr. Hine is a broadly-trained geological oceanographer who has addressed sedimentary geology and stratigraphy problems from the estuarine system out to the base of slope.

    NATURAL GAS PIPELINE TEST BEGINS Overview Test Limit On Monday, March 8, 2021, the Florida Gas Transmission Company will test 11.2 miles of natural gas pipeline using water. The pipeline runs Milam Dairy Road/ NW 72ndAvenue underneath roadways in Miami-Dade County. The following closures will occur: Along Milam Dairy Road/NW 72nd Avenue from NW 65th Street to W Flagler Street. Along W Flagler Street from Milam Dairy Road/NW 72nd Avenue to SW 87th Avenue/ Galloway Road. W. Flagler Street Along SW 87th Avenue/Galloway Road from W Flagler Street to SW 88th Street/N Kendall Drive. The test will take place one night from midnight to SW 87th Avenue Galloway Road/ 4 a.m. If the test does not pass the first night, a second night of testing will be necessary.
