Press Information New Writing at the Finborough Theatre Season November 2011 to January 2012 Papatango Theatre Company in partnership with the Finborough Theatre present four world premieres The Papatango Playwriting Festival 2011 Foxfinder by Dawn King Through The Night by Matt Morrison Rigor Mortis by Carol Vine Crush by Rob Young Papatango have teamed up with one of London's leading new writing venues, the Finborough Theatre to present the winning entries in the 2011 Papatango Playwriting Competition 2011, featuring this year's winning play Foxfinder by Dawn King which will play for a four week limited season from 29 November (Press Night: Thursday, 1 December 2011 at 8.30pm) and three runners up who will each receive a one week run – Through The Night by Matt Morrison (Press Night: Wednesday, 7 December 2011 at 6.30pm), Rigor Mortis by Carol Vine (Press Night: Wednesday, 14 December 2011 at 6.30pm) and Crush by Rob Young (Press Night: Tuesday, 20 December 2011 at 6.30pm). Papatango was founded by Matt Roberts, George Turvey and Sam Donovan in 2007. The company's mission is to find the best and brightest new talent in the UK with an absolute commitment to bring their work to the stage. Since then, Papatango have produced eight pieces of new writing in such venues as the Tristan Bates Theatre, the Old Red Lion Theatre and the Pleasance London. 2009 saw the launch of their first Papatango New Writing Competition, which each year has gone from strength to strength. National Youth Music Theatre production of Henrietta A New Musical by Katie Lam and Alex Parker Commissioned by NYMT 2020 Performances: Wed 18 to Sat 21 August Michael Croft Theatre, London WELCOME BACK! NYMT’S 2021 SEASON Established in 1976 by Jeremy James Taylor, NYMT’s productions have been seen throughout the UK and abroad. From its ﬁrst show, The Ballad of Salomon Pavey, at the Edinburgh Fringe (subsequently part of Her Majesty’s Silver Jubilee celebrations in London) the company’s work has toured to Canada, Greece, Hong Kong, Japan, Norway, Taiwan and the United States winning numerous accolades and awards. The company featured prominently at the Edinburgh Festival in the mid-1980s, premièring shows such as Richard Stilgoe’s Bodywork, highlighting NYMT’s commitment to developing new work. This has continued to this day with premières of The Kissing Dance and the dreaming by Howard Goodall and Charles Hart, Orvin by Alan Ayckbourn and Creation by Richard Taylor. In 2009 the NYMT were the ﬁrst to produce a musical at Hull Truck’s brand new theatre with Melvyn Bragg’s and Howard Goodall’s The Hired Man. 2010 began with Jeremy James Taylor being awarded an OBE in recognition of his many years’ service to young people and the theatre. The Performance of Gender with particular reference to the plays of Shakespeare A thesis submitted to Middlesex University in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Luke Dixon School of Drama and Theatre Arts Middlesex University April 1998 MX 7309012 3 IIIýýWII IIIIIXVýýýwýýllllýý ABSTRACT An analytical history of the representation of gender on the English stage from Shakespeare to modern times is followed by a detailed examination of the National Theatre of Great Britain's production of `As You Like It' in 1967, the first production of a play by Shakespeare for over three hundred years in which the female parts were played by male actors. Subsequent cross-cast productions of Shakespeare's plays by Glasgow Citizen's Theatre, Prospect theatre Company, Lindsay Kemp, Theatre du Soleil and Goodman Theatre Chicago are discussed and the views of directors and critics of those productions analysed. The thesis then presents the results of a series of workshops with actors into the playing of gender and examines, by means of an experiment employing Gender Schema Theory, how actors construct gender in a production of `Twelfth Night'. The final part of the thesis describes a controlled experiment into audience perception of gender using a scene from `Hamlet'. Theories are presented about the nature of the performance of gender on stage and the use of theatrical conventions, the relationship between social conventions and stage conventions, about the way in which an actor builds a character, the influence of biological sex on actors' creativity, and about audience perception.
