Prof. Dr. Daniel Van Den Bulcke Institute of Development Policy and Management University of Antwerp i Preface While the establishment of economic zones at the beginning of China’s open door policy were careful attempts to open China’s door to the outside world and abandon its isolationist policy, the Chinese leadership today is undoubtedly very proud of these achievements. Twenty five years after the first four Special Economic Zones (SEZ) and twenty years after the development and construction of state- level economic and technological development zones, the China National Philatelic Corporation, which belongs to the Chinese Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications, issued a special stamp in 2004 to commemorate the establishment of the Economic and Technological Development Zones (ETDZ). An accompanying leaflet stated “This stamp was issued in commemoration of the glorious achievements of the state-level economic and technological zones in the past 20 years, highlighting the role and position of the construction of the development zones in China’s economic construction. Deng Xiaoping’s inscription is the main element in the design of the stamp, and abstract symbols are used to reflect the radiating and driving role of the development zones as windows and models.” This report attempts to describe and evaluate the policy of China to use economic zones as vanguards of development. It is based on desk research with a focus on the studies of clusters and a field trip to China in April 2004 with visits to a number of zones in Shanghai, Chengdu, Chongqing, Beijing and Dalian and interviews with managers of the zones and some Belgian companies located in the zones. -

Rosen Received: 29 February 2016; Accepted: 13 May 2016; Published: 21 May 2016 Abstract: Recurrent haze in Southeast Asian countries including Singapore is largely attributable to rampant forest fires in Indonesia due to, for example, extensive slash-and-burn (S & B) culture. Drawing on the “treadmill of production” and environmental governance approach, we examine causes and consequences of this culture. We found that, despite some perceived benefits, its environmental consequences include deforestation, soil erosion and degradation, global warming, threats to biodiversity, and trans-boundary haze pollution, while the societal consequences comprise regional tension, health risks, economic and productivity losses, as well as food insecurity. We propose sustainability through a plural coexistence framework of governance for targeting S & B that incorporates strategies of incentives, education and community resource management. Since China has a vast territory, different regions formed a variety of regional cultures with different natural environments and era evolutions. Historical and cultural towns and villages not only exist as individual entities, but also as integrated urban and rural settlements and regional cultures. This paper presents the methodologies for the protection of historical towns and villages in the phase of systematic planning in Hainan Province. The research begin with looking at Hainan’s regional culture, adopting the research method of anthropology and regional heritage to retrace the culture of Hainan’s towns and villages, analysing the status quo, and on this basis, building a framework of Hainan historical towns and villages in promotion of its rational protection and development. However, there have been difficulties in retrieving spatial information from OSM. Ontology is an effective knowledge organization and representation method that is often used to enrich the search capabilities of search systems. This paper constructed an OSM ontology model with semantic property items. A query expansion method is also proposed based on the similarity of properties of the ontology model. Moreover, a relevant experiment is conducted using OSM data related to China. The experimental results demonstrate that the recall and precision of the proposed method reach 80% and 87% for geographic information retrieval, respectively. This study provides a method that can be used as a reference for subsequent research on spatial information retrieval. This study investigates the long-term (1982-2012) environmental changes in Daya Bay in response to the increase of water temperature, via comprehensively in- terpreting and analyzing both satellite and in situ observations along with previous data. The re- sults show that: 1) salinity, dissolved oxygen (DO), chemical oxygen demand (COD) and nutrients had been enhanced after the thermal discharges started in 1994; 2) the concentration of Chl-a in- creased while the net-phytoplankton abundance decreased; 3) diversity of the phytoplankton community had decreased; 4) fishery production had declined; and 5) frequency of Harmful Algal Bloom occurrence had increased. -

Abstract: A person’s living behavior patterns are closely related to three types of settlements: real-life settlements, imagined settlements, and pseudo-settlements. The term “pseudo-settlement” (PS) refers to the places that are selectively recorded and represented after the mass media chose and restructure the residence information. As the mass media rapidly develops and people’s way of obtaining information gradually change, PS has already become one of the main ways for people to recognize and understand real-life settlements, as well as describe their impressions of imagined settlements. PS also has a profound impact on tourism, employment, investment, migration, real estate development, etc. Thus, the study of PSs has important theoretical and practical significance. This paper proposes to put forward residential quarters where the mass media is displayed as the object of study and establishes the pseudo-settlement index system of Dalian in and elaborate analysis of the concept of PSs. -

www.nature.com/scientificreports OPEN Proteomics reveals the preliminary physiological states of the spotted seal (Phoca largha) pups Jiashen Tian1, Jing Du1, Jiabo Han1, Xiangbo Bao1, Xinran Song2 & Zhichuang Lu1* Spotted seal (Phoca largha) is a critically endangered pinniped in China and South Korea. The conventional method to protect and maintain the P. largha population is to keep them captive in artifcially controlled environments. However, little is known about the physiological diferences between wild and captive P. largha. To generate a preliminary protein expression profle for P. largha, whole blood from wild and captive pups were subjected to a label-free comparative proteomic analysis. According to the results, 972 proteins were identifed and predicted to perform functions related to various metabolic, immune, and cellular processes. Among the identifed proteins, the expression level of 51 were signifcantly diferent between wild and captive P. large pups. These diferentially expressed proteins were enriched in a wide range of cellular functions, including cytoskeleton, phagocytosis, proteolysis, the regulation of gene expression, and carbohydrate metabolism. The abundances of proteins involved in phagocytosis and ubiquitin-mediated proteolysis were signifcantly higher in the whole blood of wild P. largha pups than in captive individuals. In addition, heat shock protein 90-beta, were determined as the key protein associated with the diferences in the wild and captive P. largha pups due to the most interactions of it with various diferentially expressed proteins. Moreover, wild P. largha pups could be more nutritionally stressed and have more powerful immune capacities than captive pups. This study provides the frst data on the protein composition of P.
