The measurements span a wide range of ecoclimate and geological conditions and are at various elevations. Ground temperatures within the discontinuous permafrost zone are generally above -2°C and range to as low as -15°C in the continuous zone. Permafrost temperatures have generally increased across northern Canada for the past several decades, with greater warming rates occurring north of tree line. Consequently the spatial diversity of permafrost thermal conditions is decreasing over time. RÉSUMÉ Un instantané de l’état thermique du pergélisol dans le nord du Canada au cours de l’Année polaire internationale a été élaboré en utilisant les mesures des températures au sol obtenues d’environ 170 puits. THE INFLUENCE OF PERMAFROST ON NORTHERN DEVELOPMENT INTRODUCTION The expansion of settlement from man's early home in the fertile, friendly and protected river valleys of the Middle East has been marked by conquest of one natural obstacle after another. Broad seas, hot, dry deserts, mountain ranges and dense forests each in their turn arrested his progress until new techniques were devised and perfected, and became common knowledge. His invasion of the tropical rainforests was delayed by diseases, and his ventures into the far north - what Stefansson has termed "The .Northward Course of Empire" (1) - were handicapped by severe cold and snow, and by the heavy ice which impeded and damaged his ships. In his long and frequently frustrated efforts to make a home in even the remotest parts of the earth, man has encountered, and eventually learned to deal with, an enormous variety of natural hazards. Perennially frozen ground in the polar regions is one of his most recent natural obstacles. It has become of major importance only in the past few decades, although its existence has long been known. Alexander Mackenzie mentioned it and Jules Verne wrote a novel (2) based in part on it, while the quick-frozen mammoths of Siberia have been a cause of wonder for generations. How was it that such a widespread phenomenon, covering about one-half of Canada and almost as great a proportion of the Soviet Union, should nevertheless have attracted so little attention that until a few years ago it even lacked a commonly accepted English name and is only now being honoured in Canada by a national symposium ? The world population map demonstrates that man has as yet barely reached in any numbers the southern limit of that one-fifth of the land surface underlain by permafrost. -

FRANTZ Nevada Fish and Game Department Reno, Nevada Experimental plants of various strains of rainbow and cutthroat trout (SaImo gairdnerii and S. clarkii) made in Lake Tahoe from 1960 to 1963 were evaluated for both immediate and long-range contributions to the sport fishery. None of the plants was considered as successful as was desired. Lahontan and Yellowstone cutthroat (S. c. henshawi and S. c. lewisi) contributed least to the fishery. Estimated total harvests of va- rious Kamloops rainbow (S. g. kamloops) plants were never greater than 4%. However, they showed some potential for providing a long- range or premium fishery. Domestic rainbow contributed relatively few premium fish to the creel, but had the highest immediate returns (3 to 36%). The majority of those caught were recaptured within 60 days of release. An occasional Kamloops and domestic rainbow survived in the lake for as long as 3 to 4 years. To demonstrate other characteristics (e.g., movements, growth, etc.) of trout stocked in Lake Tahoe, returns from plants made over a 9-year period (1956-1964) were used. Kam- loops and Williams Lake rainbow (a wild strain from Idaho) distributed themselves widely in Tahoe's limnetic zone, and the Kamloops commonly entered its tributaries. Facts About Kokanee
WRIA1 SALMON RECOVERY PROGRAM Facts about Kokanee Description Kokanee (Oncorhyncus nerka) are sockeye salmon that spend their entire lives in freshwater. They are usually found in lakes that have either limited or no access to the ocean. Kokanee tend to be smaller in size than sockeye, as lakes have more limited food sources than rivers. They average between 10 and 18 inches in length and weigh one to four pounds. They exhibit similar markings and coloration to the sockeye, with bright silver sides, bluish-black tops and white bellies. Before spawning, kokanee will turn bright red with green Male kokanee (Photo Credit: Manu Esteve) heads; the males will also develop a humped back and hooked jaw. Distribution In Whatcom County, native populations of kokanee can be found in Lake Samish and Lake Whatcom. They spawn in Brannian, Olson, Fir, and Anderson Creeks and, to some extent, in Carpenter and Smith Creeks in Lake Whatcom and in Mud Creek in Lake Samish. The Lake Whatcom stock is also enhanced through hatchery operations, and their eggs are used to stock lakes throughout the United States. Kokanee are native to British Columbia, Alaska, Washington, Idaho, Siberia, and Japan, but have been introduced worldwide into lakes and hatcheries. Life Cycle and Reproduction After reaching maturity around three or four years of age, kokanee return to their natural area and spawn between August and November. The Beaufort Sea Conference 2000 brought together a diverse group of scientists and residents of the Canadian Beaufort Sea region to review the current state of the region’s renewable resources and to discuss the future management of those resources. In this paper, we briefly describe the physical environment, the social context, and the resource management processes of the Canadian Beaufort Sea region. The Canadian Beaufort Sea land area extends from the Alaska-Canada border east to Amundsen Gulf and includes the northwest of Victoria Island and Banks Island. The area is defined by its geology, landforms, sources of freshwater, ice and snow cover, and climate. The social context of the Canadian Beaufort Sea region has been set by prehistoric Inuit and Gwich’in, European influence, more recent land-claim agreements, and current management regimes for the renewable resources of the Beaufort Sea. Box 130, Norman Wells, NT, Canada X0E 0V0 Abstract: Mountain goats (Oreamnos americanus) are the least studied ungulate species that occurs in the Northwest Territories. The distribution of goats in the territory – both historically and at present - is limited to the lower half of the 130,000 km2 Mackenzie Mountains between the Yukon-NWT border and the east edge of the range, including a portion of Nahanni National Park Reserve. Due to the limited annual harvest of goats and the extremely high cost for doing research in this remote region - few surveys to estimate size of mountain goat populations have occurred in the Mackenzie Mountains. Biologists working with federal and territorial wildlife agencies, Parks Canada, and private environmental consulting companies have sporadically collected limited information about mountain goats during the course of studies on other species in the Mackenzies since 1966. In 2001, we interviewed each of the 8 outfitters licenced to provide services to non-resident hunters in the Mackenzie Mountains to document their knowledge about mountain goat distribution and estimated numbers in their zones.
