A UCLA Broadcast (and more) News Archive • Expanding archive of over 220,075 distinct recordings of news programs captured and digitized • Over 100 Programs covering 40 Channels • 169,670 hours of recorded programming, i.e., approximately 19 years and 4.5 months • Searching of program-level metadata as well as actual program content, utilizing more than 1.5 billion words of closed-caption texts, as well as on-screen texts, detected visual shapes, and other attributes of the audiovisual stream • Over 61,466,000 snapshot images, taken once every 10 seconds to aid in visual navigation of each recording • Grows at about 1TB per month • 56 million new searchable words each month It all starts with the mission… UC Policy on Copyright Ownership u Section I. u Preamble u “The creation of copyrighted works is one of the ways the University fulfills its mission of contributing to the body of knowledge for the public good.     ABSTRACT Chicken Noodle News: CNN and the Quest for Respect Katy McDowall Director: Sara Stone, Ph.D. This thesis, focusing on Cable News Network, studies how cable news has changed in the past 30 years. In its infancy, CNN was a pioneer. The network proved there was a place for 24-hour news and live story coverage. More than that, CNN showed that 24-hour- news could be done cheaper than most of the era’s major networks. But time has changed cable news. As a rule, it is shallower, more expensive and more political, and must adapt to changing technologies. This thesis discusses ways CNN can regain its place in the ratings against competitors like Fox News and MSNBC, while ultimately improving cable news by sticking to its original core value: the news comes first. To accomplish this, this thesis looks at CNN’s past and present, and, based upon real examples, makes projections about the network’s (and journalism’s) future. ABSTRACT What makes an act of violence an act of terrorism? This qualitative study examines the ways in which three U.S.-based cable news networks—MSNBC, CNN, and Fox News—reported and contextualized four violent events within frameworks of terrorism: the mass shooting at Ft. Hood near Killeen, Texas (2009); the mass shooting near Tucson, Arizona (2011); a suicidal plane crash into an IRS building in Austin, Texas (2010); and the attempted bombing of the Federal Reserve in New York, New York (2012). Although details between these four events seem analogous, the three networks appeared to contextualize only the Ft. Hood rampage and the Federal Reserve plot within frameworks of terrorism (specifically, Islamic terrorism)—as being “attacks” on the United States rather than isolated incidents. In contrast, the networks appeared to contextualize the Tucson rampage and Austin plane crash as being the consequences of extreme mental illness.

The age of mobile, in which people are connected to the web wherever they are, arrived in earnest. More than four in ten American adults now own a smartphone. One in five owns a tablet. New cars are manufactured with internet built in. With more mobility comes deeper immersion into social networking. For news, the new era brings mixed blessings. New research released in this report finds that mobile devices are adding to people’s news consumption, strengthening the lure of traditional news brands and providing a boost to long‐form journalism. Eight in ten who get news on smartphones or tablets, for instance, get news on conventional computers as well. People are taking advantage, in other words, of having easier access to news throughout the day – in their pocket, on their desks and in their laps. At the same time, a more fundamental challenge that we identified in this report last year has intensified — the extent to which technology intermediaries now control the future of news. Two trends in the last year overlap and reinforce the sense that the gap between the news and technology industries is widening. First, the explosion of new mobile platforms and social media channels represents another layer of technology with which news organizations must keep pace. Second, in the last year a small number of technology giants began rapidly moving to consolidate their power by becoming makers of “everything” in our digital lives. Google, Amazon, Facebook, Apple and a few others are maneuvering to make the hardware people use, the operating systems that run those devices, the browsers on which people navigate, the e‐mail services on which they communicate, the social networks on which they share and the web platforms on which they shop and play.
