ON YOUR DESK THIS WEEK!

ALREADY ON AT: KMEL PWR106 KKFR B95 WCKZ KWIN PWR102 HOT97 from the album HOMEBASE AN EXCLUSIVE HITS INTERVIE W WITH STE P JOHNSON BY JOE MED WICK Capitol Records Sr. VP/GM and head of its Black Music Division, Step Johnson, has a background a little different than most people in his position. Where most label execs have come up through retaiL radio or artist management Johnson's credits include posts at companies like Bristol Myers and Johnson & Johnson. Given his personality it only seems fitting that this Florida-grown and New Orleans-educated basketball freak would end up in the wacky world of pop music. After his stints in corporate-land. Step, much to the dismay of his parents, joined radio station Q105 in Tampa and later QUE in his col- legiate stomping grounds of New Orleans in the ad sales department. Inspired by the lunacy of d.j. Bobby Earls, whose penchant for playing a song a dozen times in a row while screaming at the top of his lungs was local legend. Johnson became a disciple. Step soon got exposed to the more colorful side of the business at Earls' annual 4th of July barbecue, where he encountered a driveway of Porsches, Mercedes and Cadillacs, which belonged to the national promotion heads of many of the major record labels, and decided, "This is for me!" His New Orleans internship earned him a gig with ABC Records in the late '70s, which led him to MCA, then A&M in Dallas, before he segued to Hollywood with the latter label at the urging of departing head Jheryl Busby. In 1987, he became VP/GM for the Black Music Division at Capitol. Now Sr. VP/GM, Johnson is helping guide the mega-success of M.C. Hammer and his Bust It stable of up-and-com- ing new artists as well as the latest hit efforts from Be Be & Ce Ce Winans, , the Whispers, Freddie Jackson and Phil Perry. Kid 'N' Play Bounce Back Strong! AIN'T MEIN' FOR A HIT! Yes folks, the man who used to sport an erection on his head and his trusty sidekick are livin' large! The erection may be gone (this makes JAMS research god- dess Kandace Taylor very sad), but Kid 'N' Play are definitely in the house, and the house is rockin'! "House Party 2" will fill the seats at your local flick house next month, their car- toon series is doin' damage in its second season, their new LP, "Face The Nation," the first to benefit from Select's association with Elektra, is set to drop pronto, and their update of the Brick classic, "Ain't Gonna Hurt Nobody," is rulin the airwaves 24-7- 365, and, according to Curtis Jackson of George's Music Room, they're "hurtin' everybody at the registers." Everybody say owwwww! The big boys are leading the way — WRKS. WKYS. KMJQ. WCDX, WOWI, WPEG. WBLX. KIPR. WZAK, WIZF, KKBT, KJLH and KRIZ, whose PD Frank Bar- row states that "New Hairstyles + Brick Samples = Smash," have all come to the party! What's your excuse? "We did extremely well out-of-the-box!," raves Select Promo & Marketing VP Wyatt Cheek. "It's a strong song, and we're committed, CHRIS BENDER CHERELLE F. S. It's an average day on San Francisco's colorful Haight Street, and all the regulars are out — beat-up naugahyde re-runs of Axl Rose, Siouxsie Sioux and Flo & Eddie. That's why Billy Corgan looks so out of place. The 24-year-old guru behind PalMo zer meisters Smasiing Pumpkins is sporting his typical Chicago attire — jeans, workboots and a wacky T-shirt — with his hak cropped at cri uncool above-collar length. And when this 6'4" guy comes loping up to you, you kinda feel like that kid in "Phantasm" cowering in fear of the mysterious Tall Man. But Corgan is a brainy lad who can sensibly articulate his rather askew vision with mile-a-minute fervor. Ifs no easy task pigeonholing this remarkable quartet, whose Caroline Records effort, "Gish," is one glutinous, gorging gargoyle of guitar grunge and spaced-out '60s serenity. Call a track "Siva" and you better mean it — Corgan does, and sends Goddess-&-destruction riffs into a placid Ganges of floating chords and tempos. Similarly, "Snail" creeps along like some sneaky Peter Max psychedelic slug. What's it all about, Georgy? Damned if HITS' psuedo-intellectual deadbeat Tom Lanham "On Wry" knows, but he'll expell a few liters of CO2 trying to find out.

72 HITS September 23, 1991 AN EXCLUSIVE HITS INTERVIE W WITH EXTRE ME BY BRUCE MATZKIN

It's taken several months and three singles, but Extreme — the latest band to carry the torch of Boston's rich rock heritage — has finally hit paydirt, scoring a #1 smash with the simple ballad, "More Than Words." "Pornograffitti Il," the follow-up to their 1989 self-titled debut, was a critical success from the start, but most everyone overlooked the first two singles, "Decadence Dance" and "Get the Funk Out." The latter cut was a smash overseas, however, helping the band sell out their recent European tour, which was so successful that they're returning in October to play larger venues. Led by Nuno Bettencourt, who is being lauded as one of the best rock guitarists to come along in years, Extreme is determined to capitalize on their emergence as one of the hottest bands in the biz. They're cur- rently opening for David Lee Roth and Cinderella, and next they'll be joining the ZI Top tour. It was the day after a

show somewhere in South Carolina that drum mer Paul Geary — the on ly ban d mem ber abl e to drag himself out of bed — took a few minutes between yawns to chat with 1111T own bastion of boredom, "Babbling" Bruce Matzkin.

Being a hard rock band, does it bother you it was the ballad that finally broke Extreme? We were getting pretty frustrated, so when the song hit, we couldn't find anything negative about it. If "Jingle Bells" was on our record and that's what it took for people to buy and listen to the rest of the record, that's fine with us. A major reason the earlier singles didn't break was be- cause MTV wouldn't play the videos, which was apparently a point of consternation with you guys. Have your feelings towards MTV changed? I personally never had any resent- ment for MTV. I know it's strictly business, and at the time we weren't doing as well as a lot of other acts. Nuno's feelings about m-ry concerned the hits they were making that had no substance, like Vanilla Ice. What does that tell you about the state of pop music? It creates fast-food music. GUNNING FOR THE PRESS: Yeah, sure Guns N' Roses' epic "Use Your Illusion I" and "II" taken together are probably the most impressive rock & roll double album since the Rolling Stones' "Exile On Main Street," but the guys still have a ways to go class-wise to catch up to "The World's Greatest Rock Band."
