Talking Heads were formed in New York in 1975 and were at the forefront of the ‘New Wave’ scene. The music was very artistic, and used a lot of elements of electronic music which we are very used to hearing now, but in the 70s were brand new and very exciting! The film starts with the band’s lead singer, David Byrne, singing and playing his acoustic guitar, and throughout the concert his bandmates join him on stage until by the end the stage is full and their full electronic sound can be appreciated. ‘Stop Making Sense’ also shows David Byrne in his well-known ‘big suit’, which he wore because ‘music is very physical, and often the body understands it before the head’.
