V de Venganza, Moore y Lloyd (2005, p. 39-41). 15 Introducción José Manuel Valenzuela Arce El Colegio de la Frontera Norte Las manifestaciones, marchas, plantones, activismo en redes socia- les y protestas sociales que observamos en la presente década en di- versas partes del mundo, se inscriben en los marcos de exclusión y precarización de amplios sectores de la población y en una inmoral ampliación de la desigualdad social. Esta situación ha propiciado la digna indignación de amplios sectores sociales en diversas partes del planeta donde las y los jóvenes adquirieron papeles protagónicos y liderazgos reconocibles. Indignadas e indignados recuperan atisbos de esperanza amplificada por la fuerza potenciada de los colectivos juveniles que despliegan consignas, demandas, deseos y emociones. El futuro se disocia de vacuas promesas de progreso dejando paso a un presente cotidiano cargado de incertidumbre y aprehensiones, pero también de un ahora que inspira resistencias y luchas que prefi- 17 El sistema es antinosotros. Culturas, movimientos y resistencias juveniles guran nuevas formas de estar juntos y la certeza interiorizada de que otro mundo es posible. Millones de jóvenes enfrentan la incertidumbre y los efectos de una crisis ampliada que afecta sus condiciones de vida, sus expectativas de empleo, su acceso a prestaciones sociales, el decremento de su seguri- dad en contextos cada vez más violentos. Entre los jóvenes, persisten marcadas diferencias en opciones y expectativas de vida a partir de regiones, países, clase, género adscripción étnica, preferencia sexual, aspectos que inciden en las bases objetivas que definen u obstaculizan sus posibilidades de desarrollar proyectos viables de vida. En el actual escenario tardocapitalista destacan problemas vinculados a la situación laboral de los jóvenes, como son el desempleo, la precarización y la in- formalidad. La población juvenil registra tasas de desempleo superio- res a las existentes en otros rangos de edad, pues, constituye una quinta parte de la población mundial en edad de trabajar, pero conforma 40 por ciento de los desempleados (CONAPO, 2010, p. 45). Complemen- tando este escenario de precariedad y vulnerabilidad, resulta adecuado apuntar que en 2005, 308.5 millones de jóvenes trabajadores, es decir, 56% del total de jóvenes empleados, permanecían en la pobreza con ingresos inferiores a dos dólares diarios. The movement was, on its face, unusual: its figurehead, the 75-year- old Gandhian, Anna Hazare, was apparently rallying urban, middle-class professionals and youth in great numbers—a group otherwise notorious for its political apathy. The scale of the protests, of the scandals spurring them, and the intensity of media attention generated nothing short of a spectacle: the sense, if not the reality, of a united India Against Corruption. Against this background, we ask: what shared imagination of cor- ruption and political dysfunction, and what political ends are projected in the Lokpal protests? What are the class practices gathered under the ‘‘middle-class’’ rubric, and how do these characterize the unusual politics of summer 2011?     Social movements, virtual networks and alternative media in June when “the giant awakened” (?)1 Cicilia M. Krohling Peruzzo2 Abstract This study is about the large Brazilian civil demonstrations which began in June 2013, with the aim of identifying the main aspects that characterize them, and to understand the presence of social networks and alternative communication in the process. This is a first approach based on literature research and unsystematic observation of manifestations as they happened, and through virtual networks as well as the tracking of media coverage of conventional and alternative media. We conclude that civil society has shown its strength, and exposed the existence of a universe of communication larger than the mainstream media. Keywords: Social Movements, mobilization, communication, virtual networks, alternative media. Introduction The theme of this article is quite encompassing and has complex connections to be summarized, and it deals with a subject still in flux, which allows us to say that we have no intention of completely tackling it, but just to raise some aspects and weave approximations regarding the question of communication in the context of the huge public protests that erupted in Brazil in June 2013. The initial question asks if virtual networks really were responsible for the organization of the urban protests that led hundreds of thousands of people to the streets.     Number 1 2013 ISSN 1862-3581 INTERNATIONAL Youth as a Seismograph for Societal Problems Sabine Kurtenbach Over the course of the last two years, 2011 and 2012, youths around the world have pro- tested in a variety of contexts and forms. More than the various manifestations of their protests – from political upheaval in Tunisia or Chile to violence in Syria – it is youths’ worries about their own place in society that unify them. Analysis Even in the most divergent societies, youth are perceived as a problem group, despite the fact that a consistent definition of what constitutes youth has been absent to date. To base such a definition exclusively on age would be misleading: other factors, for ex- ample, social position, would remain unconsidered. No longer children but not yet part of the circle of adults, youths find themselves both physically and socially in a phase of transition. For very different reasons, they rebel against established orders and authori- ties and question existing boundaries and conventions. However, even under very diffi- cult political and economic conditions, youths only head onto the streets en masse when EDITION they see no prospects for the transition into adult life. The forms their protests take re- veal fundamental societal processes and problems. Young people grow up with expectations about the transition into adult life that, be- cause of rapid social change, can now scarcely be realized. The lifeworlds of youths and their problems with the entry into adult life are, de- spite all the differences, comparable worldwide. The mobilization of youths and the nature of their protests are closely connected with the socialization processes and types of cohesion within a society.

    Personal reflections on 50 years of radical media John DH Downing* Southern Illinois University I began to use – I detest ‘consume’ – small-scale media 50 years back, living in the rather Disunited Kingdom. Peter Watkins’ 1965 neo-realist docudrama The War Game, exposing British viewers to the realities of a nuclear attack and the government’s absurd civil defence preparations, was canned by the BBC under government pressure, but got screened in a single small Soho cinema. Meanwhile, for six months in working-class Stepney in docklands London, I reported for, edited, did the layout for, negotiated with the printers about and schlepped around pubs selling a monthly community newspaper (Step Ahoy). Penguin Books began publishing a slew of incendiary paperbacks, such as Frantz Fanon’s The Wretched of the Earth. Stepney public library had The Autobiography of Malcolm X available straight after its UK publication. Pirate radio stations, moored outside the then 12-mile territorial limit of the UK’s legislative domain, began broadcasting rock music all day and night, a different universe from the generally sedate and placid BBC. Oz magazine appeared in 1967, The Black Dwarf in 1968. ‘Northern’ social realist movies had preceded all these (over 1960–62, for example, Saturday Night and Sunday Morning; Taste of Honey; The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner). They were called ‘Northern’ because they were set in the north of England, but in their unromantic yet gripping depictions of working-class life – in those years I was living in the Yorkshire coal- mining area – they served to up-end the miserable snotty-minded values redolent of respectable folk, south or north.

These new mobile networks have altered the way people exist in and relate to spaces where the real and virtual world blend, blurring the lines of traditional spatial denitions and frameworks.
