SYDNEY HILLS EAGLES AFL CLUB Inc. CHAIRMAN’S REPORT

GUS SEEBECK

I must begin by extending enormous congratulations to everyone involved with our U18 Division One team who took out the Sydney AFL Premiership. This win was a few years in the making and a just reward for a long campaign. Following two unsuccessful visits to the Grand Final, 2012 was our year and despite a few nervous moments early on, the Eagles showed their class in the second half and ran away comfortable winners. To coach Peter Steer, his assistant coaches, all the players and their families and everyone involved with the U/18’s, we say a huge congratulations.

Not only did this team lead the way on field throughout the year they were also an incredibly tight group off the field. To witness first-hand the celebrations held at the Crowe household after the game showed what a great group of players and families we have coming through the ranks. If this is anything to go by, the future of the Club looks very bright and we look forward to welcoming as many of the U18’s and their families into our senior ranks as we can next year.

Right across the Club, 2012 was a year of change and a year of firsts. Our first season in the NEAFL with as many as 20 new recruits was always going to be challenging and I believe we showed the entire competition that we can be more than competitive at this level. We were very fortunate to secure the services of 200-game Carlton champion Ryan Houlihan as player and senior assistant coach along with a number of other talented players who all brought senior experience to the Club. I’m also particularly proud that many of our most consistent performers across the year were local players who have come through the ranks to compete at NEAFL level.

The Premier Division season was particularly challenging. Our resources were spread thin across the board and this needs to be a major focus area for 2013 to ensure we operate this team at the standard we have set over many years. Just because there is now a higher grade at the Club does not mean our Premier Division team should be run any less professionally. In spite of this it was a terrific effort to win five games and finish ahead of four other teams. Congratulations and a big thank you to coach Michael Sankey for all his efforts throughout what was at times a very trying year.

At Division One and Division Three level the playing group took control of their seasons and were very self-sufficient. Full credit must go to this group for organising themselves very well and for pressing their case for bigger and better things next year. This area of the Club is very important to ensure we provide playing opportunities at all levels for those graduating from the U18’s and we look forward to working with everyone involved to ensure they remain an integral part of our future.

Whilst as a Club our on-field results this year were solid, off-field has been an enormous challenge. We must remember that throughout our planning for the NEAFL we discussed and agreed that this phase of development would be tough and risky. We prepared budgets based on our historical positions along with comparative info provided by the AFL and formulated revenue projections using all the information we could get our hands on.

It is also important to remember that there was no manual or handbook on how we should do things and we went into this with no safety net. We are breaking new ground in Sydney football and creating history with everything we do. In the space of ten short years we have leapfrogged many clubs and I

______7 2012 YEAR BOOK

SYDNEY HILLS EAGLES AFL CLUB Inc. firmly believe that if we do things right from here on in we can be a powerhouse across every grade in which we compete.

Throughout the year we have enjoyed the support of many individuals and groups. As always a huge thank you to our loyal sponsors in particular The Griddle Restaurant, the Mean Fiddler, the Castle Hill RSL Club, Telstra Business Centre Nor-West, Selvaggio Lawyers, Jatec and IDM Sports. The Eagles simply could not exist without your support and generosity.

The AFL has also been incredibly supportive throughout the year. They showed enormous faith in our Club by allowing us the opportunity to field a side in the NEAFL. They have provided generous financial assistance including the complete funding of our Club Manager position. They have also provided direct financial support to the Club as well as facilities support to help construct the new coaches’ boxes and other debt relief. I would like to sincerely thank everyone at the AFL who we deal with on a regular basis, most notably Andrew Dillon, Tom Harley, Simon Laughton, James Ceely, Joseph La Posta, Jack Masters, Dean Connors and Andrew Knott. A special thanks also to the retiring Garry Burkinshaw for all his help over many years.

We also extend a big thankyou to The Hills Shire Council for all their help throughout the year. In particular, the work they put in to in the lead-up to the NAB Cup game gave us every chance to impress the AFL and make the night a success. Given the amount of rain leading into the match, both AFL teams were very impressed with the facility and we have done everything we can to put ourselves forward to host further matches in the future.

To all our loyal members, supporters and volunteers we thank you for your hard work and dedication. It’s never easy giving up a large chunk of your weekends and weeknights to ensure the Club runs smoothly but we could not do it without you. We remain the envy of the competition in the way we run the majority of our club and I’m sure you all agree that provided we spread the load and do not rely on too few, we can continue to improve and make our Club even better.

To all our junior alliance Clubs most notably the Kellyville Magpies and Baulkham Hills Hawks we thank you for your support throughout the year. There is no question we need to be far more visible with these Clubs and work has already begun in this area. We have only scratched the surface in terms of the opportunity to collectively grow the game in the Hills.

We recently made the difficult decision to part ways with our Senior Coach Glenn Garner. Glenn has been with the Club for five years and has always gone above and beyond as Coach to achieve success. His record of four consecutive Grand Final appearances, three successive Premierships and Finals in the first year of NEAFL is a record that will likely never be surpassed. We wish Glenn and his family every success for the future and thank them sincerely for their impact on our Club.

We must also extend a big vote of thanks to our Club Manager Tony Moran who has worked tirelessly all year. Tony was often the first person at the Ground on a long Saturday and was the last to leave. He put an enormous amount of effort into the NAB Cup game and was also successful in securing government funding assistance for the coach’s boxes. He brought several new sponsors to the Club through his business network and represented the Club with great distinction across the AFL.

I would personally like to thank our other Board Members, Chris Baddock, Craig Abercrombie, George Acland and Tony Moran for all their hard work and support throughout the year. Each Board Member gives up a lot of time and makes a great deal of sacrifice, all for the betterment of the Club.

I have no doubt that 2013 will be another defining year in our Club’s history. The Board has a solid plan to return the Club’s finances to surplus and if the early signs are anything to go by we should be set for another great off-season of recruiting. Combined with the younger players we have coming through the ranks, our on-field position will only continue to improve. Despite our off-field challenges this year our Club’s reputation has again grown through our achievements in the first season of NEAFL. To fully maximise our potential we need everyone on board and helping from here on. We must be aggressive,

______8 2012 YEAR BOOK

SYDNEY HILLS EAGLES AFL CLUB Inc. but realistic with our revenue projection and ruthless on spending. We need your help to unify our culture and continue to make our Club a great experience for everyone involved.

Finally, thank you to my wife Laura and kids Ella and Mac for all their understanding and support. Congratulations to all award winners tonight. It is just reward for all your hard work and sacrifice. Enjoy the off-season and the break. I look forward to seeing you at the footy bigger and better than ever in 2013.

FINANCE

The Finance portfolio was without doubt the toughest area of the Club to manage in 2012. We knew there were going to be a range of new expenses occurring from both the name change and our entry into the NEAFL. A raft of other costs were also budgeted to increase from playing expenses, coaching expenses and medical support through to strength and conditioning coaching, players kits and even the light bill at Bruce Purser Reserve.

On top of all these budgeted expenses came a few surprises including the challenge of building the coaches boxes at Bruce Purser inside a tight time frame and through difficult weather conditions.

The year was all set to start with a bang around the NAB Cup game between The and North Melbourne at Bruce Purser on March 3rd but persistent rain in the lead-up to and during the game kept the crowd away. This had a major impact on the Club’s finances as we simply did not receive the income we had budgeted from this major event.

From there it was always going to be an uphill battle. Several other events scheduled for BRP were also washed out and the general economic environment meant that sponsorship and function revenue was always going to be hard to chase.

As the year went on the situation did not improve and we were forced to have some difficult conversations with a number of the Club’s creditors. On this note (and without going into great detail) I would sincerely like to thank a number of businesses and individuals for their understanding and patience during the year as we worked through this difficult situation. I would also like to specifically thank the AFL and AFL NSW/ACT for all their help and support.

The Board has worked hard throughout the back-half of the year to manage the Club’s finances and is confident that with a concerted effort across the Club in the area of revenue generation and stringent cost control in 2013, we can return to surplus by the end of next year.

We have not recorded too many loss-making years over the past decade. The reality is that operating six teams and maintaining the standards we have set across the Club is an expensive exercise, especially if we are to continue the levels of success that we have become accustomed to.

All hands will be required on deck in 2013 if we are to get the Club back into profit. This will extend across sponsorship, canteen, functions, raffles and all other revenue generating areas. Many hands make light work and this is especially true for revenue generation where we will need the entire Club to unite.

SYDNEY HILLS EAGLES AFL CLUB Inc. OUR MOST VALUED SPONSORS

TONY MORAN Club Manager

In 2012 the Sydney Hills Eagles welcomed many new sponsors and were very fortunate to enjoy the continuing support of many of our existing sponsors. As we all know, community football clubs such as the Eagles simply cannot exist without the generosity of local businesses and we say a sincere thanks to everyone who has contributed in 2012.

The Griddle Restaurant in the Rouse Hill Town Centre joined the Eagles as a new Premium Sponsor in 2012 and we thank Alfredo and his team for keeping the teams so well fed. The Griddle was the regular venue for meals after Thursday training and the players and coaches enjoyed fantastic hospitality and great food throughout the year.

Our existing sponsors at The Castle Hill RSL Club and The Mean Fiddler also supported the Club in 2012. We held three major functions at the RSL and they continued to sponsor the goal post pads at Bruce Purser. The Mean Fiddler was a popular meeting place for the Club as it has been for many years.

We welcomed a new ball sponsor in 2012 – Telstra Business Centre Nor-West. We thank Steve Sebbes for providing all the footies for the year and welcome him to the Club. Look out for

some great mobile phone offers for members in 2013.

Other new sponsors to join the Eagles in 2012 include the Virgin Active Gym at Nor- West, Selvaggio Lawyers, Footy Tips, Fine Wine Partners, ACP Magazines and IDM Medical Supplies.

We also sincerely thank our signage sponsors at Bruce Purser Reserve that included Kings Transport, Lamson Paragon, Wirtgen, Sports Physio Nor-West and Vitafive CPR.

SYDNEY HILLS EAGLES AFL CLUB Inc. Finally on behalf of the players we thank our Player Sponsors – TVS, Base Course Management, Profiler Sales and Service, Wild Fox Wines, Mr. Taxman, Rent-a-space, Jatec and GCG Turbos.

Sponsorship will be a key area of focus in 2013 and we look forward to welcoming new sponsors over the summer months.

Once again on behalf of the entire Club we say a huge thanks to all our valued and loyal sponsors for their continuing support and generosity.

SYDNEY HILLS EAGLES AFL CLUB Inc. STRATEGIC PLANNING

CHRIS BADDOCK Director of Strategic Planning

Growth in any organisation is difficult to manage and 2012 for the Sydney Hills Eagles has proved to be no different. Those who look back over a decade ago would remember these growth pains as the East Coast Eagles continued its evolution from a local junior football club into a Sydney premiership team which has attracted much talent on and off the field.

Added to these growing pains external factors certainly didn’t help us off the field. Just remember the major event for the year, the NAB cup game where we catered for several thousand people and then the skies opened with around 25% of the expected crowd deciding to stay warm and dry at home. Added to this, small business confidence continues to be pressured in the local economy with sponsorship therefore becoming harder to attract.

However I truly believe that with these growing pains the club performed above expectations on the field. Just think a finals appearance in our first year of the NEAFL and a Division One U18 premiership. We have a relatively young squad, with many of the U18 premiership team ready to step up into senior footy. And if you had a chance to see any of the Division Two U18 team and the U16’s juniors from around the district then you will know that we have great depth of talent and a system that can now help players develop throughout all levels of football right up to the edge of AFL. Beyond this we have developed a strong, trusting and mutually beneficial relationship with both the AFL and the GWS Giants where we gladly helped several players step into the GWS NEAFL squad throughout the year.

Off the field we most definitely saw examples of the growing pains. With six senior sides we had teams playing far and wide across both days of the weekend which then placed pressure on our volunteer community. As much as we love football we also have other responsibilities. We certainly do volunteer work well, however as with many clubs we have too few doing too much, therefore a focus for season 2013 will be to expand and even out this workload. This will take a leap of faith by supporters, players and new parents to the club. Being a club must be the focus here and I know the Board will ensure that the culture of being family based and there for everyone will be a focus for 2013.

Finally I must call out the achievements of Peter Steer who after a number of years of getting to the Grand Final finally has a flag. Peter you are truly a club man who deserves all of the success that has and will come your way. Congratulations!

I look forward to working through our growth plans in 2013 and if you want to help, please put your hand up.

SYDNEY HILLS EAGLES AFL CLUB Inc. CANTEEN

TONY MORAN Club Manager

Well another season has passed and many hundreds of people have sampled our famous Eagle Burger.

Every year is a challenge for the canteen operation and this year didn’t let us down in that regard with six sides sometimes playing across four different venues over two days on the weekend and on occasions in two different cities in the case of the NEAFL team. These circumstances add significant pressure to the volunteer effort and this was evident in 2012.

There were some big days at BPR in 2012 where we hosted five games that stretched across some ten hours of operation that required some tremendous efforts from our canteen staff.

Special thanks to the lovely canteen girls Michelle and Tua who worked some very long hours this year but always with a smile and a serving attitude. We would have been in a deep hole if it was not for their continued efforts in 2012. Also a special thankyou to those players, parents and members who helped in the canteen during the year. We hope you enjoyed it and that you return for more in 2013.

Ron and Barb Heathcote, our 2011 Club Persons of the Year, once again backed up to help the Club provide an excellent menu to all attending our game days from Ron’s “Heathcote MK II” Mobile BBQ. The efforts of these lovely people cannot be underestimated, nor go without acknowledgement. Not many would know, but this year the Heathcote’s were under quite a bit of pressure with ill heath in the family, but they continued to turn up to footy and provide us with their services that were as good as ever under trying conditions. Our best wishes go out to the Heathcote family at this time.

Ron chipped in with some new signage to help promote new menu items this year and once again the BBQ environment took on a new vibe.

I would also like to thank and acknowledge all those people who helped with providing catering services at the NAB Cup game in March, in particular Steve Marks and the boys from the Division Three group for their efforts in making sure things went smoothly at this special event.

We experimented with the menu this year with a view to providing more healthy options to players and spectators alike. This year we introduced a fish option as well as the all-day big brekkie, salad rolls and of course the pancakes were a big hit. We will continue to look at fresh food and good healthy options in 2013 and we welcome your input and suggestions in this regard.

We continued the NSW Good Sports program in 2012 and with their assistance we have now achieved Level 3 accreditation this year which is excellent acknowledgement of the good work being done in our canteen for the enjoyment of everyone on game day.

The challenges of 2012 are going to exist in the main throughout the 2013 season. Next year we simply need more help. Ron and Barb and our canteen girls Michelle and Tua cannot continue to do the long days being asked of them without the Club’s support. The canteen cannot improve on healthy eating options and achieving or exceeding the results of previous seasons without more assistance from players, members and supporters alike. The Eagles canteen and BBQ is acknowledged as the finest in the AFL world. Please show your support of the Club and help us promote our canteen and continue that reputation for seasons to come. ______13 2012 YEAR BOOK

______15 2012 YEAR BOOK

SYDNEY HILLS EAGLES AFL CLUB Inc. ECE COTERIE CLUB

PETER PHYSICK

“Many years ago there was what most called “the little white bag”. This bag accumulated money from various activities, most of which was sharing a few beers at training amongst die hard Falcons, now Eagles’ supporters. Each year the bag covered the expense of small items that the Football Club was unable to.

In 2009 the “little white bag” was suitably formalised into the Eagles’ Coterie Club and although the bag is still traditionally used to collect money at each event, the Coterie is now much more structured in its support role to the Football Club.”

I’m delighted to report that in 2012 the Coterie Club has further advanced in its role as a provider of goods and services where we believe it to be in the best interests of the footy club. Active members of the Coterie in 2012 are now 22 in number. Viz: Craig Abercrombie, George Acland, Chris Baddock, Andrew Baxter, Phil Bester, Chris Bilkey, Rowan Bilkey, Rodney Frost, John Famularo, Scott Gatte, Jon Gawley, Steve Gawley, Trevor Hangan, Richard Lee, Tony Moran, Peter Physick, Mark Pinchen, Michael Sankey, Gus Seebeck, Frank Ure, Bill Varga and Jon Vlatko.

Accumulated funds via “subscription fees of $10 / round” and other fund raising activities raised $8,960.01, whilst expenditure amounted to $8,217.16. Including the carryover from past seasons, we have current funds of $3,737.00 in the “white bag”. There were 27 different items of expenditure, details of which can be made available to anyone contemplating joining the Coterie Club in 2013. All are carefully considered purchases and go to the betterment of the Football Club to assist in having it run as effectively as we can.

Stuff like that makes it all worthwhile and a great reason why the Coterie Club is such a burgeoning new enterprise within the Eagles.

We encourage all Coterie members to also be a full member of the Eagles in 2013 and “membership” will remain fixed at $10 per minor round game – the same as 2012. Whilst that may not seem much, the growth of the Coterie is a function of increasing numbers of people, rather than the cost to members. Weekly membership is supplemented by fellowship at training with drinks available along with the apparently world famous “Ali’s Dimmies” also on sale at selected training nights.

The Eagles have a great supporter base already and if we increase our numbers to 40 in 2013, it will allow us to further consider additional expenditure to assist the Football Club where we can. We hope to widen the fund raising base of the Coterie in years to come by also running luncheons where Coterie members can proudly bring their business clients along to a high quality function and introduce them to AFL football and in particular, the Eagles.

We encourage you to become a member of the Eagles Coterie in 2013, remembering that its sole purpose is to support the Club we all love in Sydney footy. As we grow and prosper, membership costs may rise, but for now it’s a bit of fun and training nights at Bruce Purser are turning into the most popular place in town for a drink and a chat to catch up on all things to do with the Eagles.

Please contact Peter Physick on 0419 264159, or any of the current members listed above should you want to know more.

You won’t regret it..... ______16 2012 YEAR BOOK

AFL SYDNEY LIFE MEMBER - 2012

Peter Physick

At the 2012 Phelan Medal awards evening in September, Peter was honoured with Life Membership of AFL Sydney for his contribution to football in Sydney and in particular of course the:

 Baulkham Hills Falcons  East Coast Eagles  Sydney Hills Eagles

The following is an edited excerpt from the AFL website which profiles Peter’s history.

Peter was born in Adelaide in 1952. A very good junior footballer, he captained the 1969 South Australian schoolboys AFL team before playing League football with South Adelaide in the SANFL. Peter and his wife Laima moved to Sydney in early 1974 where he played football with East Sydney in seasons 1974, 75, 77 and 78, playing in two Grand Finals at Trumper Park in front of 14,000 people. In 1977 he won the Premier Division goal kicking award and represented Sydney in numerous State championships.

During 1978 Peter was transferred to Newcastle by his employer, but such was his love for footy, he commuted by train each weekend to continue playing for the Bulldogs. He retired from football way too early at age 27 when his work transferred him around Australia during the eighties. Returning to Sydney in 1991 they settled in Seven Hills and involved their two sons Ben and Tim in the Baulkham Hills Football Club where Peter and Laima both became active parents giving assistance in many facets of the club’s operations. They continued similar roles during 1992/3 and in 1994 Peter took up coaching the U/13 Kookas, became a committee man as well as introducing the weekly club newsletter the “Baulko Backchat”. Peter and Laima were awarded the “Junior Clubman of the year Award” in 1995.

In 1996 Peter was elected President, a position he went on to hold for the next 12 years, highlighted in 2000 when he and Laima were elected as Club Life Members. Other roles Peter undertook were Chairman of the Sponsorship Committee and a member of the ground establishment group as well as being the Club’s delegate to the NSWAFL over those 12 years.

The Baulkham Hills Falcons had been promoted to the SFL First Division in 1993 and played at Charles McLaughlin Reserve in Crestwood. The ground was considered too small by the League, but also suffered from overuse so it was decided to free the ground up to junior footy and find a larger ground. Hence the club played at Macquarie Uni, and Alan Davidson Oval for quite a few years while work went on behind the scenes to acquire land to build a new ground.

In 1999 the League approached the Falcons and suggested, amongst other things, that they consider changing their name. Peter thought long and hard about that and after consulting the Swans’ President Richard Colless, the were approached with a business plan to create an ‘Eagles’ team in Sydney. An alliance was formed and hence the East Coast Eagles were born in 2000. That alliance still continues today more than 12 years on. Following Peter’s initiative, other Sydney clubs started similar associations with other AFL clubs, but only the Balmain and Fremantle Dockers connection still exists.

In the meantime the search for a ‘Home Ground’ continued and Peter dedicated thousands of hours working with other club members, the local council and the AFL. There were many disappointments along the way, but eventually in 2009 Bruce Purser Reserve in Rouse Hill was opened, which not surprisingly coincided with the Eagles first of three consecutive Sydney Premier Division Premierships. The ground is a crowning achievement of Peter’s efforts and determination.

Peter Physick is well respected by all involved with AFL in Sydney and along with his wife Laima has had a strong influence on the success of the East Coast and Sydney Hills Eagles. ______17 2012 YEAR BOOK

SYDNEY HILLS EAGLES AFL CLUB Inc. PLAYER LIFE MEMBER - 2012

Players of the Sydney Hills Eagles AFL Football Club Inc shall be entitled to Player Life Membership after playing one hundred and fifty (150) NEAFL or Premier Division games for East Coast Eagles / Sydney Hills Eagles only, or two hundred (200) games in any East Coast Eagles / Sydney Hills Eagles grade. Ryan Fitton

Ryan grew up playing soccer and that remained his first sporting love until being introduced to AFL footy in the year 2000, which just happened to be the inaugural year of the Eagles. He played 18 games that season, 13 in the Under 18’s and five in the Reserves. The remarkable statistic that came out of that season lies with the fact that in those 13 games he won the B&F with 96 votes, 31 clear of the Runner Up. Oh and by the way he finished 8th in the Ressies Medal.

Quite a remarkable start to his career which has now continued to the point that “Fitto” becomes only our third Player Life Member of the Eagles.

His on field playing record continued after that startling first year and he was immediately spotted by then Premier Division coach Tim Jones and although still an eligible U18, he was installed as a regular First Grader from that point on. Although Ryan did not win a Club Champion Medal, he came close on several occasions with his best finish being equal Runner Up to Jon Vlatko in 2005.

A fearless and tenacious footballer Ryan has always been exciting to watch and has been a fan favourite forever to those faithful supporters on the hill over his 13 years with the Eagles.

Although “Fitto” did not win too many individual awards, no one can deny that his crowning glory at the Eagles is his membership of the exclusive “Triple Premiership” Club. Only seven players can claim this title and to Ryan’s credit he is one of them!!

Now he joins Ben Physick and Jason Duss as only the third Player Life Member of our Club.

We congratulate Ryan Fitton on his achievements and his contribution to the strength of the East Coast Eagles and this year, the Sydney Hills Eagles, as together they remain a strength in Sydney Football.

“Fitto’s” record by the numbers is as follows;

156 Eagles’ Premier Division games 1 NEAFL game 198 Total Eagles’ games

The Chairman’s Award was created to recognise the significant contribution to the Club’s wellbeing, by individuals who give more than could ever be asked for. In a Club the size of East Coast, there are any number of candidates who would be worthy winners.

But each year someone always stands out …

Frank Ure

Frank is a true Club man who always puts the Club first. Throughout the year Frank has attended most games and has always gone above and beyond to volunteer and help. Whether it be running the merchandise tent and selling gear, helping to run the canteen, help on the barbecue or do the more glamorous jobs like tidying the rooms after a game, Frank is always the first to put up his hand.

Frank can always be heard asking “what else needs to be done”. He often stays back well after games to ensure the rooms are clean, bins emptied and everything is locked safely away. A real ‘roll up the sleeves’ helper, he will not rest until everything has been done.

Frank has been stalwart of the Eagles for many years and with wife Leone they are regulars at both games and functions. Their two sons Blake and Brad have been great players across the years with Brad returning to the Eagles in 2011 following a stint in Perth.

On behalf of everyone at the Club we sincerely thank Frank for all his hard work and help across the years. He is a much deserved winner of this award and deserves our heartfelt thanks and congratulations.

Hopefully Frank can take some time next year to watch and enjoy footy!

A club is only as good as its people. Be they players, coaches, administrators, managers or supporters. We have many such people at East Coast who happily provide their assistance in a variety of ways. Some do it financially, others do it with time. Some do it with both.

Trevor Hangan Trevor has been involved with the Eagles Club in the capacity as a coach, player and more recently as a volunteer since the Club’s inception in 2000. Prior to this he was played and coached at the Baulkham Hills Falcons. He has also been involved for many years been in the Police AFL side and has been team manager for the annual touring side for a number of years and continues in this role today. Trevor devotes an incredible amount of his personal time and energy towards the Eagles week in and week out, not only during the season proper, but he is there right throughout the pre-season period as well. He is present at training every night from Monday to Thursday to assist the players, coaches and physio staff to make sure they have everything they need to conduct a successful training session. This could be up to three hours each evening. He is responsible for ensuring all physio kits are packed and ready for use by teams for matches which can be across several venues on most weekends. On game day he is again present at all games that he can possibly attend each weekend to provide assistance to the coaching staff with essential statistical data or guidance to players. Throughout the year he personally takes on the process of selling Club Merchandise via a stall at the ground at each home game. Joker Poker is his favourite fund raiser during the week and sometimes he actually remembers to put the Joker up on the wall. He is always looking for something to do and is always first to step forward when something needs to be done around the Club. Trev has devoted thousands of hours to the Eagles and many more to the game of AFL. If it was not for his tireless effort and his love for the game, in a time where all clubs are challenged by a declining volunteer effort, the Eagles would indeed be in a lesser position. It is Trevor’s quest that the Club is successful and that the players achieve all they can throughout their career with the Eagles and to ensure they experience an enjoyable and developmental time with the Club. It is also his desire that they too may go on to be valuable volunteer assets to the game wherever they choose to make their home in the AFL and that they learn the ropes at the Eagles Club. Congratulations Trev and we are so glad that you are on our side...... ______23 2012 YEAR BOOK

This award had always automatically gone to the winner of the Best & Fairest trophy in First Grade. The Club Executive chose to introduce revised assessment criteria from 1999 onwards, thus allowing any East Coast player to win. This trophy will now be awarded to that player who displays exemplary form both on and off the field in relation to overall Club contribution. Up until and including 2006, this award was titled Footballer of the Year.

All footy clubs across Australia have fine people. People who make it their mission in life to ensure that “their club” is the best. The Eagles are no different to any other.

Steve Marks

The Eagles are proud to announce Steve Marks as our 2012 Clubman of the Year. Steve joins some great company in receiving this award and adds another dimension to the significance of this esteemed group of people who have been important influences on our Club over the years.

Steve’s outstanding contribution to the Eagles commenced early in the season when he was a self-appointed supervisor of the food and beverage services for the NAB Cup match in early March. As our volunteers on the night came together and started to pump out Eagle burgers and cold beverages by the dozens, Steve was working behind the scenes to make sure the various marquees were sufficiently resourced, stocked and that cash was safely handled and returned to the control area in the canteen. He was not asked to take on this role; he just stepped up to it through his own initiative. Although the event itself was impacted by weather, the catering services provided were of a high standard and acknowledged by all at the game thanks to Steve’s direct efforts.

Steve was also the driving force behind the Division One and Three groups of players during 2012 acting as the group’s secretary and chief communicator. He kept the players informed on training times, match day venues and times as well as the social functions the Club had organised during the year. This was a large group and thanks to Steve’s efforts, maintaining communication with them was made that much easier in ensuring they were made aware of vital Club information.

Steve was again the key in mobilising this group to attend the Rouse Hill Town Centre as an alternative sales opportunity to sell as many tickets as possible in our monster raffle in 2012. Once again, he was not asked to organise this, he simply took the lead and encouraged others to follow and they did.

As well as his off the field contribution, Steve was an integral part of the Division Three side in the 2012 season. His playing consistency on the field was rewarded as he polled well in the best and fairest voting, finishing third in a large group of players who participated in games for this side throughout the year.

In recognition of his outstanding efforts during the 2012 season, Steve is a worthy winner indeed of this award and we look forward to his continued contribution to the Eagles over coming years. ______24 2012 YEAR BOOK

“A man can be as great as he wants to be. If you believe in yourself and have the courage, the determination, the dedication, the competitive drive and if you are willing to sacrifice the little things in life and pay the price for the things that are worthwhile, it can be done.” Vince Lombardi

To be the best in your field is an enormous honour. The Eagles revere their heroes and it is a tribute to the talents, determination and work ethic of those who become our Club Champion each year.

Jamie Vlatko Jamie has won back to back Awards in 2012 to continue the Vlatko domination since inception of the Club Champion status in the year 2000. Lured to the Eagles by older brother Jon in 2010, Jamie left Norwood in the SANFL where he had played 85 games and kicked 168 goals. Prior to Norwood he had two years at Glenelg for 24 games and 23 goals. Jamie instantly fitted into the Eagles’ line up as the “go to” man down forward to replace the retired Gus Seebeck. His superb marking skills and deadly accurate kick for goal made him the most feared forward in the Sydney Premier Division competition. The statistics keep on rolling for Jamie. In 2010 he kicked 73 goals to lead the club in that area, he played 18 games, came 4th in the Club Champion, represented Sydney and NSW in State matches and was included in the AFL Sydney Team of the Year. However his crowning achievement was a member of the 2010 Eagles’ Premiership side alongside his brothers Jon and Pete. In 2011, he went even further. This time he upped the ante to win the Club Champion Award by just one vote from ruckman Steve O’Connor. He was the leading goalkicker in the Sydney AFL Premier Division comp with 78 goals, finished third in the Phelan Medal, played 20 games to take his tally to 38, was again included in the Sydney Team of the Year along with representing Sydney against Cairns mid season and finally he won back to back Premiership medals when the Eagles took their third successive Premiership. In 2012 he was an inaugural member of our NEAFL team, kicked 32 goals, took his tally to 56 matches, was named in the NEAFL (Eastern) Team of the Year, represented NEAFL Eastern against their cross conference northern rivals and took out his second consecutive Club Champion here at home. Congratulations Jamie Vlatko on another outstanding season.

The leading Goal kicker in the Club was for many years awarded to the player who kicked the most across all our grades of footy, no matter where they played, or how often. In 2001 it was changed to recognise First Grade senior goals only. In 2012 that becomes the leading NEAFL goalkicker.

In 2012 the Leading Goalkicker is Matt Edwins with 48 goals for the NEAFL season. Leading goal kickers in all other teams were:

Premier Division Ash Moeller (22) U/18 Division One Jake Famularo (103) Reserve Grade Jason Moeller (15) U/18 Division Two James Delaney (14) Third Grade Nathan Peters (26)

Matt was recruited to our new NEAFL side from Balmain where he had kicked 34 goals in 2011. He settled quickly into the side and established himself as a valuable member with regular contributions to the scoreboard as the side experienced early wins in the opening rounds.

With Matt’s blistering speed and sharp skills, Glenn Garner generally played him on the wing or up the ground and although he is not one of the larger frames in this competition, he takes a very strong mark.

His contribution of 48 goals, predominantly from the wing, was achieved amongst some very talented and skilful players and is recognition of his high work rate and ability to read the game by capitalising on the opportunities that came his way.

His goal kicking skills were instrumental in assisting the Eagles in achieving their team target of 16 goals per game and in doing so, cementing a semi finals position in their first year in the NEAFL competition.

Aaron Savage, or ‘Sav’ as he is better known around the Club, is a fitting winner of the inaugural NEAFL Rising Star Aaron Savage Damon Steer Award for 2012.

‘Sav’ was one of the side’s younger players, coming into the senior team from the Under 18’s in 2011 and his recognition as our NEAFL Rising Star is a great reward and acknowledgement for a local junior.

Coach Glenn Garner is quoted as saying about Sav, “He is a great talent and great kid who has been a pleasure to watch develop into a very good player at NEAFL level. His commitment and dedication to listen and strive to improve are a credit to him and the type of stories you remember and treasure as a coach. Sav is a great example of the work ethic and dedication required at the highest level. If he can maintain those qualities and continue to learn and improve at the rate he has this year, he will have a real hot go at an AFL spot in the future”.

19 year old Damon Steer missed virtually the last two full seasons of football after shoulder reconstructions in both 2010 & 2011 which ended his season in both of those years. This meant Damon’s move into senior football was delayed and he had to watch on as some of his young teammates enjoyed premiership success in the Premier Division.

Damon, however, never lost his enthusiasm and was always helping out with jobs, including stats and acting as a runner to make sure he stayed involved. Indeed his efforts were recognised when he was awarded the Clubman of the Year in each of those seasons. This year saw Damon complete the full pre- season and the benefits were there for all to see with his fitness levels and results putting him amongst the top dozen players in the club.

“Damo” started the year at centre half forward but was soon moved to full back to cover for injuries and promotions. After moving into defence he thrived and in his first three games in that possie he did not have a goal kicked on him. A magnificent effort considering some of the key forwards he had to play on.

His form continued unabated throughout 2012 and a very pleasing sixth finishing position in the Premier Division B&F is testimony to his talents and determination.

Rising Star criteria  In his first full year of Senior Football.  Demonstrates excellence in many areas of his football.  Is influential in the success of the senior team.  Lives up to the Team Values.  Demonstrates outstanding qualities that set him apart from others. ______29 2012 YEAR BOOK

It certainly has been another great year of 18’s footy at the Eagles. From the pre-season training to the victory of Division One, it has been a hugely successful year.

As always there have been plenty of ups and downs with Division Two, but it has once again been a great pleasure to be involved with this group of young men.

This year saw the addition of a lot of new players to the 18’s, with a great mixture of experience. We had those who had come up from the U16’s, to guys who just wanted a game with their mates. We even had a couple of players who had never played before. To me, this is the real essence of Division Two football - moulding all the different levels together to make a viable unit to play competitive football. It was a real pleasure to see all the progress in the skills and teamwork develop throughout the year.

A mentioned, we certainly had our ups and downs throughout the year, but the players never stopped trying or gave up no matter what the circumstances. As we all know with the addition of NEAFL and injuries, playing numbers have been stretched nearly every game. There were always phone calls on Friday night trying to ensure that we had enough players for the weekend. Our alliance with our U16’s has been invaluable this year and we certainly would not have had the success we had without them

I am very proud to say that there were players promoted to the seniors during the season, to Division One and even to GWS as top up players.

So after a long pre-season, the competition was ready to start. Our first game was against Moorebank. We were a new team, with a new coach and we were ready to go. We had four U16’s playing and for one of the few times for the year - a bench! We certainly started well, and we were up by four goals at the first break. Unfortunately, for the rest of the game we seemed to struggle to regain our great start and finished up going down by three goals. We ended up with two injured players on the bench that left no players to go back on the field and this was pretty standard for the season.

This year we have played some fantastic team football, with a couple of standout games. Firstly the game against Parramatta at Gipps Road. One thing with Division Two, we always played early and usually away from the rest of the club, so it is credit to everyone involved who just turned up and got on with the game. It was a cold and miserable morning and we all turned up at 7.45am. It was a fantastic game of footy with contributions from everyone in the team. We played a consistent four quarters of football. This has been something that we struggled with throughout the year with so much change in the player line-up.

We ended up with a great victory, with lots of players playing different positions - ie Luke at fullback. The confidence was high and we were consistently first to the ball. Our skills and determination were second to none. As usual we had four U16’s from St Clair whose contributions to this game and many others throughout the year cannot be underestimated.

The other great game we played was against Maroubra Saints. After the standard Friday night phone calls ensuring that we could field a team and the long drive to the Eastern Suburbs we were good to go. ______30 2012 YEAR BOOK

SYDNEY HILLS EAGLES AFL CLUB Inc. It was the strongest line up we had all year with great targets up forward. Everyone played an exceptional game with Jake and Blake unstoppable up forward. We ended up winning by 100 points and keeping the Saints to a very low score. On the downside, we again ended the game with injuries which resulted in no bench. But when you are playing great football, it does not seem to hurt as much.

I think one of the pleasing points about this year, has been the players who have gone up to play U18 Division One. They certainly learned a lot and came back with a new lease for the footy team.

We had two great leaders of our team, Ayden and Dave, both of whom played in the Division One team during the year. These two young men personified the Division Two boys. Complete opposites, with Ayden chatting all the time and Dave the quiet type who just showed how to do things on the field. I do not think the results showed the efforts and endeavour they put in all year, on and off the field. The guys were always committed to whatever tasks were given and as a coach you cannot ask any more than that.

Best and Fairest: - Ayden “Milne” Stevens. Ayden’s football has grown immensely this year and is a deserving winner. He played a fantastic captain’s role all year and his drive through the middle was fantastic to watch. His run, chase and competiveness, were a pleasure to watch. It would have been great to give him a break sometime, but due to the limitations of our bench this was not possible. He was rewarded for his consistent football and played up in Division One. I can testify that there was never a dull moment with Ayden and the boys!

Best and Fairest runner up: - Brad Crelley. Another player who had a fantastic year and there was nothing better than him dashing forward from the wing with ball in hand. He has speed to burn and great skills. When Brad’s confidence is up he truly is unbeatable.

Coach’s award: - Dave Berger. Co-captain with Ayden. He played a fantastic year at fullback and was rarely beaten. He was rewarded with a few games in U18 Division One. As a coach, he was a pleasure to coach due to his dedication and his drive to try his hardest.

There is a lot of people who get the Division Two team on the park each week and who I could not have done any of this without their help

1. Bronwyn Bailey: Manager (aka ‘The Boss’). A big thank you for all your help all year. Your organisational skills and getting all the paperwork done was fantastic. I know that you were stuck with the thankless task of getting help from parents for goal umpires and time keeping and your help on this was tremendous. A tireless worker for Division Two and the footy club. I could not have done this without your help and I wish to take this opportunity to personally thank you. 2. Mike Lambert: Runner/Assistant coach. It has been a real pleasure coaching with you this year. A great football brain (which is incredibly rare) and his willingness to do anything was fantastic. Thanks mate 3. George Acland: Our club umpire. George has done a fantastic job with us this year via his ability in organising umpires and boundary umpires. More importantly, his support for the boys is incredible and he is truly a great asset for the footy club. Thanks. 4. Gary Delaney and Dave Crelley: They have both contributed immensely to the team this year. Gary provided me with fabulous advice and Dave as our water boy. Thank you both. 5. Physios: Joseph was with us all year and I know that this was much appreciated for all the boys. Knowing that he was around to assist in treating injures and assisting in rehabilitation was comforting. Most importantly, his assistance in providing injury prevention advice was fabulous. 6. The Club: For giving me the opportunity to coach the boys – a great thank you. To Tony and Trevor, thank you for all your help and support. It is not easy coaching a football team on your own so without your assistance, guidance and support this would not be possible. 7. Peter Steer: A big thanks to a guy who lives and breathes 18’s Eagles’ footy. It has been a real pleasure being part of an 18’s program that is run so effortlessly. I know it takes considerable work behind the scenes to get to where we are today. Congratulations on the success this year - well deserved.

I can truly say that we would not have been able to field a team on many weekends this year without your assistance. I really hope that you continue in playing football and I welcome any of you to the Division Two team at any time. 9. Parents: To all those who have helped to make this year so enjoyable. I know we have been all over the country this year, so thank you for driving the boys everywhere. The support for the boys and the coaches has been invaluable.

On a purely personal note, a big thankyou to Erika and my boys, Lukas and Nicholas for supporting me whilst I continue with something I really love doing. Thanks for the support.

PETER STEER

The Eagles’ Junior Alliance Clubs play a pivotal role in enabling us to put two U18 teams on the field each week, but it offers much more that just that. The Alliance serves three main functions.

Firstly it introduces the Eagles to their prospective players of the future by holding joint U18 training sessions. Secondly it provides some junior players with the opportunity to test themselves at the U18 level and assist their development. Lastly it facilitates a smooth transition from junior to senior football.

This year we received outstanding support from St Clair, Baulkham Hills and the Kellyville / Rouse Hill clubs and 15 players from those clubs played U18’s footy for the Eagles.

Measuring the success of such a program over the years can be difficult, but the most telling statistics to date are the fact that 15 players have progressed from an Alliance Club and played NEAFL football for the Eagles. While a staggering 44 players from present or past Junior Alliance Clubs played in the Eagles Sydney AFL Premier Division side this year.

A sincere thank you to John Dimond and David Stevens from St Clair, Mark McLeod from Baulkham Hills and Greg Thomas and Keith Leggett from Kellyville/Rouse Hill clubs.

The Statistics: We had a total of 61 players play U18’s footy this year, and 37 players played in the U18 Division 1 side which is testament to the depth of talent we have at the club. In addition, 12 U18’s played in the Premier Division Seniors and eight U18’s played NEAFL in our inaugural year in that competition. The team kicked over 100 goals more than any team in the competition and went through the season undefeated which is a huge feat and very well deserved.

Season Review: The pre season saw the induction of many new players to the ranks and with a lot of hard work and many phone calls, we were able to put the two U18 teams together for season 2012. Once again, we had many talented players join the Eagles and quite a few Challenge Cup players from 2011 showed promise and would push for promotion to the Peter Steer – Premiership coach newly named U18 Division 1 team.

Fielding two U18 teams is very challenging and we are still the only club able to do so. This year with the introduction of the NEAFL team, the U18’s were given even more opportunity to play senior football but this put additional pressure on for numbers each week. To enable us to keep the U18 Division 2 team we rely heavily on our Alliance Clubs and their support throughout the season was excellent.

Right from the outset it was obvious we would be very competitive but you don’t really know where you stand until you have played every team as the U18 sides change markedly every year. After the first six rounds we were sitting on top of the ladder with five wins and a bye and Jake (Boof) Famularo signaled his return to AFL footy with a bag of eight goals in the first game and 25 after Round 6. The team had gelled very well and we were playing some quality football.

The middle of the season was a real mixed bag, ranging from outstanding results where we won games by over 100 points to a thrilling four point win over Pennant Hills and a draw with the in Round 12. We were still on top, but a couple close encounters really had an impact on the team and we collectively decided that we needed to work even harder if we were going to go all the way this year, but the signs were very promising.

In the run up to the finals, we had several byes and some dominant performances, but one in particular stood out, where the team kicked 45 goals to post a 285 point victory over the Penrith Rams. We were playing good football and confidence was building every week. We ended the home and away series as undefeated minor premiers but still had the job ahead of us if we were to go one better than last year. “Boof” finished the series on 98 goals after kicking 12 in the last game.

______34 2012 YEAR BOOK

SYDNEY HILLS EAGLES AFL CLUB Inc.

We earned the first week off in the finals series and we ramped up our training. Our finals preparation, focus and commitment was excellent and we received some very welcomed support at training from some of our NEAFL senior players in Jon Vlatko and Rowan Bilkey and this really upped the tempo at training. We came up against a quality Lions’ outfit in the 2nd Semi Final and they came out full of fire and enthusiasm, but we withstood the initial adrenaline filled charge and went into the sheds eight points up. The second quarter was another tight struggle but we extended the lead to 14 points at half time. The Lions came back in the third and it was game on as we struggled to retain a slender two point lead at three quarter time.

The lads responded to the challenge in the best possible way as we held them goalless in the last quarter while we kicked five of our own to come away with 30 point win but the signs were good for the Lions and we knew we had a challenge on our hands if they made it to the Grand Final. The win meant we had another week off and a chance for a couple of players to recover from minor injuries. The lead up to the Grand Final is both exhilarating and devastating for a Coach and this year was no different. The excitement and build up at training was outstanding but informing five players they were not in the GF team is the hardest thing a coach has to do. To their credit, and a display of their character, they all came to the game and were actively part of the team and the win.

The Grand Final would prove to be an epic battle and an excellent demonstration of quality U18 football. We put in an average first half and the Lions capitalised on their opportunities and we went to half time 27 points down. There were a lot of very glum faces both in the rooms and in the grandstand but to the credit of players they responded to our half time talk in the best possible fashion and came out firing in what proved to be the Premiership quarter. We kicked five goals to one and took a slender one point lead Jake Famularo – 103 goals Best & Fairest into the final quarter. But just as importantly, we had turned the game around and the momentum along with it.

We continued the good form in the last term to open up a 22 point lead late in the quarter and the sighs of despair had turned into moments of relief and jubilation. A massive 49 point turnaround in the second half and an unbelievable comeback effort and belief in each other saw us hoist the trophy high and with great pride. The difference in feelings and emotions from last year could not have been more different and the celebrations went long into the night. The 2012 U18 Premiership is a bond we will share forever.

We also need to celebrate some individual successes. Jake Famularo kicked 103 goals for the season and 65 goals more than any other player in the competition, which is a magnificent achievement. In addition, Jake and Nick Crowe were equal Runners Up in the U18 Kealey Medal. Congratulations guys!

Success does not come easily and it is testament to the hard work and commitment of many people and I would like to sincerely thank the following for their outstanding contribution, dedication and support of the U18’s.

To Jamie McNeil our U18 Division 2 Coach a big thankyou. Arguably the toughest coaching job in the club and Jamie performed it extremely well. His contribution to the U18 Division 1 team was invaluable and his support throughout the season was very much appreciated.

SYDNEY HILLS EAGLES AFL CLUB Inc. Michael (Mouse) Johnston, in his first year as our Forwards Assistant Coach, brought a lot of fresh ideas and perspectives and this certainly had a big impact on me and the team. Having been his first AFL Coach in Under 15’s, it was a real pleasure and honour to have him by my side at the GF and share the win. Thanks Mouse!

Col (Sarge) Amos our Match Day Assistant was at every training and game and helped with whatever needed to be done. A big thankyou Col.

Our Team Managers Paul Stewart and David Arndt organisational role kept the young Eagles team on track all season. In addition, Paul did a great job in organising parents and volunteers and this is a thankless task, but one that Paul did impeccably. Thanks gents.

Paul Regan, our ever reliable runner influence on the players should not be underestimated and he always performs his role in a very professional manner. On several occasions, he probably covered more ground than most of the players. Thanks mate.

A big thankyou to the “Ministry of Aqua Services”, Giulio Battistella and Brett Rylance. We were the only team in the club that had multiple Nick Crowe water runners each week and your support and encouragement for the Captain and Runner Up B&F players was brilliant. Thanks guys.

The Leadership Group in Nick Crowe, Josh Battistella, Malen Watson and Cameron Arndt had some difficult issues to deal with during the season and the way you handled the issues and yourselves is a real credit to you and your families. I certainly appreciated all the support you provided me and the leadership you gave to the team. Really well done guys.

A special thanks to Nick Morgan our U18 Physio for your on-going support of the players. Nathan Halliday and Sports Physio Norwest a huge thankyou for your support and the work you have done to rehabilitate injured players and get them back on the track. Thanks!

Glenn Garner, our club NEAFL Coach put standards in place at the Eagles which have been unmatched and these then set the benchmark for the rest of the club. Thanks for all your support and guidance Garns. I’m proud to have worked with you and have learned a great deal.

Michael Sankey our Premier Division Seniors’ Coach stepped up to the position this year, but kept an over seeing role on the 18’s and certainly gave many 18’s the opportunity to play and experience Senior football. His involvement culminated as an Assistant Coach for the finals and his input, guidance and insightful thinking certainly made a difference. Thanks Sanks.

To the Eagles Coterie Club, a special thank you for your ongoing support and being there every Wednesday night and “Dim Sim Dickie” was a big hit with the Dads and lads.

To the Eagles Board, Gus Seebeck, Craig Abercrombie, Tony Cameron Arndt Moran, Chris Baddock and George Acland, your support of the Best Team Player 18’s program is wonderful and without this support we would not successful. Thanks gents.

To our Club Manager Tony Moran, a big thanks mate for all your support all year. The introduction of the NEAFL team has brought with it some challenges for you and the club and you have always been there for the 18’s and we all certainly appreciate it very much. Thanks Tony. ______36 2012 YEAR BOOK

SYDNEY HILLS EAGLES AFL CLUB Inc. Trevor Hangan’s unrelenting support for the 18’s is a major factor in the teams’ success again this year. It was an honor for Trev to present the U18 Premiership medals but it was a bigger honour to receive my medal from Trev. Thanks so much mate.

A big thank you to the Parents for your contributions each week and the support you have shown your sons and the coaches. To be so actively involved in their lives at this age is a great thing and it has been absolutely wonderful getting to know you all and helping your sons develop as footballers and young men. Thanks!

A very big thank you to my wife De and sons Justin & Damon for your continued support and enabling me to continue to indulge in something I’m passionate about: coaching.

Well finally I can say we did achieve our ultimate goal. The feeling immediately after the game was probably more of relief than anything else, but that quickly turned into exhilaration after seeing the faces of players, parents, officials and supporters and this was a massive reward for all the hard work. The Premiership is a huge Adam Fender – Coach’s Award bonus and definitely something we all strive for, but my primary role is to develop young players and have them playing to the highest level and I believe we were very successful in that area this year. As this group of players has shown this year, the club has a very bright future

It has been an honour to guide them and a pleasure working with the parents and club in general. Thanks

The 2012 season started with great numbers attending training with confidence growing within the Div One and Div Three squads. This was to be crucial for the club later in the season when numbers were a huge concern with injuries and unavailability from the Premier and NEAFL sides.

After five rounds we were sitting in 6th position on the ladder with a 3/2 record and confidence was growing with each game. From then on the team suffered 12 losses in succession due to lack of numbers. In one game against Campbelltown we could only field 15 fit players, with a couple of team mates competing with injuries who should have been on the side lines. During this period we really got dealt some heavy defeats, but to the players’ credit they did not give up at any stage and must have got sick and tired of the coach telling them how proud he was of the group and to hold their heads high.

From Round 15 onwards results were on the way upward again. We were defeated by Blacktown (eventual Grand Finalists) by only 22 points. In Round 16 we got badly beaten by the Saints in a very fiery encounter where we played short of numbers again and could not match the opposition’s aggression for the whole game. Round 17 we played Western Suburbs with the wind so bad that birds were flying backwards. At one stage in the last quarter Nathan Peters kicked across the ground for the switch play from 30 metres out and it went through the big sticks for the opposition.

We approached the final round at home against Moorebank with confidence as we knew that we could match them for fitness as well as pace. I elected prior to the match to have co-captains - they were Henry Ashdown and Brad O’Grady. Henry is heading back to Queensland and Brad has decided to retire as his old body has finally admitted defeat. The team responded with a terrific effort, rewarded with a 40 point victory at home. Thank you Henry and Brad for your contribution to the team and the club. Personally I have known Brad for several years and yes, it is his fault that I became match day coach for Div 3, sorry fellas. Henry it was a privilege being associated with you for such a short time as you put the team above anything else and always did what was asked of you. Thanks to both of you. Brad, don’t be a stranger around the club, or the team and best of luck in Queensland Henry.

I would also like to say a special thank-you to two people who have helped me throughout the year. Chris Jones our team manager, who on more than a handful of occasions did the manager’s role as well as doing the goal umpiring. He even went out and played for the team with his injuries and all. Thanks Chris. Andrew Green, without your sense of humour in the low times, the season would not have been the same. As well as being the team runner Greenie always put his hand up to play when numbers were short. In one game against the Saints he even nearly kicked a goal, alas, he hit the post. Thanks Greenie.

I would really like to thank my family for their support during a hard year. Deb, my wife for putting up with me and even attending games when possible. Jacqui my daughter who not only attended games, but also on occasions ran water for the boys. Thanks from me and the team Jacqui. Chantal my oldest daughter, who after a bad day at footy would always put things into perspective “It’s only a game Dad”.

SYDNEY HILLS EAGLES AFL CLUB Inc. The most pleasing aspect of the season was to see a lot of my boys make the step up to Div One, even though I lost my captain, Matty Mack and my gun fullback Steve Marks for the majority of the season. A couple of boys I was very proud of were Mitch (Reggie) Davis in his first season playing the majority of games in Div 1. The other being Alec Hogan, who only first started playing AFL last season and after 24 games under his belt gained selection for Div One and according to all reports performed well.

Thanks also to Jason Moeller for his assistance during the year and for teaching me the skills required.

Thank you to all for bringing me into such a great club, and special thanks to the Coterie Club for their support during the year. On behalf of the team I would also like to thank two other people, who without their help we would not have been able to play each week. George Acland who was the team’s umpire week in and week out - without an umpire there would be no game. Secondly, but not least, is our team Physio, Samantha Glover. She was there to patch the boys up each week and later in the season she herself was under duress with her own knee injury which required surgery. Our thanks go to both of you. Here’s to a great season in 2013.

In 2012 with the club embarking on a new and exciting venture with the NEAFL team, it meant there was always going to be a big shuffle of various areas around the club, including coaches, volunteers and most notably the players.

The season for our group began in late January with many players keen and committed to playing Div Three football. With large numbers on the track so early and a willingness to commit and improve from the outset, there couldn’t have been a better feeling amongst the group.

With only a few weeks before the season began the group and I would be thrown a big and exciting challenge from the club, who were yet to appoint a Div One coach, after the position was left vacant by Rod Frost. Before taking on the role it was extremely important for myself to get the backing of the players and know that they were happy and prepared to play Div One football if required.

After all that was settled, attention was then turned to Div Three to ensure that they would remain an important cog in our squad and the club and would be well supported. With Lester Biggs happily stepping into the role of head coach and soon followed by Chris Jones as manager, the team had two important pillars that would be there to guide the team through the season.

As always with Round 1, all teams were as strong as they were going to be all season and a great team performance kick started our season with an emphatic 80 point win over Western Suburbs. Sadly the group would not taste success again until Round 6. It was to become the story of our season, winning too infrequently to ever really challenge for a top five spot.

As the season took its toll on injuries throughout the club, as well as within our squad, it became a real management task to ensure both Div One and Div Three had the best possible chance of winning, by ensuring both teams had strong numbers and support during games.

By mid-way through the year numbers at training were dropping off and a commitment that needed to be there from all players wasn’t and it was up to too few to pick up the slack and keep driving the team forward. Again it was a long time between wins with our next coming in round 11 with a fantastic effort in the wet against arch rivals Pennant Hills. With seven weeks to go in the season we had set ourselves up with an opportunity to have a real crack, but unfortunately a lack of fitness and polish meant although we would be competitive over the final rounds, ultimately we would not be good enough to win enough games of footy.

Occasionally we would find the ability to finish teams off. A big win over Macquarie University in a make- up round, the week after losing comfortably to the same opposition, was an example of what the team was capable of.

After a tough gruelling season and without 23 players available for the final two rounds of football, it was a testament to all involved in both games. Narrowly going down to UNSW/ES with an extremely undermanned team, and our last round victory over Western Suburbs, when all looked lost after a poor

______45 2012 YEAR BOOK

SYDNEY HILLS EAGLES AFL CLUB Inc. first half that returned one scoring shot. The team came out after half time and kicked 10 of the next 13 goals, holding off a very hungry opposition.

In a reflection of the season it is important to note a few things:

This year the core of Div One was last year’s Div 3 (which was a team that did not make Div 3 finals).

 We played as the clubs third string side, playing in a competition where five clubs fielded their number one team.  Each week the team would often lose its best players to Premier Division.  10 or more players had season ending injuries, whilst five or more players left for travel mid- season.  Our average losing margin was 50 points in a season where we lost 13 games. Take out the losses to the undefeated Manly and Grand Finalists Southern Power and our average losing margin was a competitive 30 points. Yet our average winning margin was a very healthy 40 points, from a team that finished second bottom.

It is important for the players and members of Sydney Hills to consider these points and realise that whilst it wasn’t a very successful year in the wins/losses column, it was a year of strong and competitive efforts week in week out with our backs firmly up against the wall.

It also should give great hope for those players within the squad, that future success is possible and achievable if a core group of players stick together with a drive and determination needed to be a successful squad and team.

On a personal note, I would like to thank a few people.

Firstly to the club, Gus Seebeck, Tony Moran and the Board, thank you for the opportunity to coach Division One football. I have enjoyed the experience and the challenges that came with the job.

To Michael Sankey and Trevor Hangan and all those involved on match day outside our squad. Thank you for your support. To the Coterie Club for funding our best on ground awards each week and specially to Richard Lee for filling us up on Wednesday’s after training.

To those who ran the whiteboard on game day, Jason Duss, Ryan Madden and a big thanks to Dan O’Connor who gave up his time whilst recovering from an ankle injury, and a huge thank you to my brother Ash Moeller who ran the board whenever not playing, even stepping in and coaching a game.

To all those who volunteered for either Div 1 or Div 3 whether being our runner, running water, goal umpiring or time keeping, thank you for your efforts and time. To my support staff and leadership group thank you for all your help, ideas and guidance, with a very special mention to Garry Bailey for all your help over the past two seasons. I literally could not have done it without you.

Finally to the players, thank you for the roller coaster that has been the last two seasons. I have thoroughly enjoyed being a big part of this squad and I look forward to playing a big part in the future. As many of you know I will be stepping down from the role of head coach, but will not lose any hunger or desire to play alongside a great bunch of blokes.

If I have missed anyone please know that I am very appreciative and grateful to any help and support you have given both myself and the squad this season.

A quick special mention to a good friend Peter Steer - congratulations on finally winning your first Grand Final. It is truly is the culmination of six years of hard work and dedication.

To finish off I would like to say congratulations to all award winners within the club. All deserve their awards and should be proud of their achievements.

Bring on 2013. Jason Moeller ______46 2012 YEAR BOOK

Season 2012 was always going to be a bit of an unknown for our AFL Sydney Premier Division Side. As a football club, all of our planning and preparation went into ensuring that our entry into the NEAFL competition would be a success both on and off the field. The aim as a club was to add a significant amount of talent and depth to our list with the aim for this to filter down to our remaining AFL Sydney sides so that we could maintain our competiveness in each of the sides that took the field every week.

In my opinion, we ticked the majority of the boxes in this key area both on and off the field and as a coaching group, we were quietly confident that we would be a quality side in the NEAFL competition and maintain our competitiveness at least in Premier Division. We were realistic, but with a little bit of optimism thrown in for good measure. However the key focus was always on our NEAFL squad which is how it should be if we want to be a serious challenger at that level over the coming years.

If you had asked me at the start of the year what an acceptable result would be as the coach of our Premier Division side, I would have answered without hesitation that nothing less than finals would be acceptable. If you had asked me at the end of the year what an acceptable result would be, my answer would remain the same. My philosophy and mindset when it comes to anything to do with competition is that nothing less than winning can be accepted. As a player I was the same and as a coach even more so. Don’t get me wrong, I am a realist and understand that you won’t win every game; however you can never accept defeat in anything you do whether that is in your sporting life, your personal or professional life. If you can maintain this mindset for long enough and get enough like-minded individuals to believe in the same message, then anything is possible.

As a football club, we have been very spoiled over recent Etiosa Okunbor times with our Premier Division side playing in five out of the Best & Fairest previous six Grand Finals up to 2011 which culminated in us achieving the famous “Threepeat.” Looking back we were very fortunate to have some very strong and influential leaders in our club who demanded perfection and never accepted anything less. My job this year was to impart this philosophy onto a group that had mainly played Reserves (Div One) and U18’s football and to take them to the next level. A lot of players always want to know the difference between a senior and a reserves player and why they aren’t getting a game. It is pretty simple in my opinion. Not only do you have to have the talent, but you have to have that competitive nature within and you need to

______50 2012 YEAR BOOK

SYDNEY HILLS EAGLES AFL CLUB Inc. have high expectations of yourself and work harder than the rest. When you are taking it easy, or not turning up to training, senior players are working hard on and away from the track.

In 2012 our Premier Division side started off reasonably well with us winning three out of our first six games with a highlight being an away win against a more fancied opponent in Illawarra. However once injuries and unavailability started to kick in our results really fell away and unfortunately we suffered seven defeats in a row. It was during this time that our resilience was really tested and unfortunately this year we simply didn’t have enough committed players to turn things around. Attendance at training suffered and I have no doubt that the players weren’t enjoying some of the big defeats we suffered at the hands of some of the stronger sides.

Pleasingly we came through this period winning two of our last four games to finish off with five wins for the season and finish in seventh place on the ladder. The seventh placing was probably a little misleading as the competition really struggled this year and the difference between the top and bottom sides was fairly significant. In fact we finished seven games plus percentage behind a fifth placed St George. This is the gap that we will need to make up in season 2013.

The real highlight for me for this year was playing many of our Under 18’s with the majority of them having a real impact at Premier Division level. Watching some of these players develop throughout the year was very rewarding and I have no doubt that the experience they gained playing at this level helped them when it came to finals time in their competition. To have a small role with them throughout finals time was a very enjoyable experience for me this year and to see them win the Grand Final was very satisfying.

There are many people that I would like to thank this year. To start with I would like to thank Peter Steer for his ongoing support throughout season 2012. To be honest, our football club is really fortunate to have someone such as Steery, guiding and mentoring the young men under his leadership. You won’t find a more passionate person when it comes to under age football in Sydney and to see him win this year’s Premiership was a great thing for all of us to see after so many heartaches. To go through a season undefeated was an outstanding result considering that not once did Josh Shephard – Runner Up Steery have his best side this year until finals time. He never complained and he never stood in the way of young players being selected to play at a higher level. In fact he went out of his way to ensure that I had enough players each weekend. I would also like to thank all of his players especially some of them who were playing two games each weekend which was less than ideal. I look forward to many of these players taking the next step in 2013 and aiming to play NEAFL football.

I would like to thank my match day assistant Scott Gatte. I am very thankful that Gatts stuck his hand up when no one else would and I am also very pleased that I got to spend some time to getting know him better. I really enjoyed our match day banter and his extreme levels of optimism each and every week. No matter the opposition I could rely on Gatts to stay positive and show the belief in the playing group. He gets just as excited as I do when we had a win.

Thanks to fabulous Phil Bester. I don’t think that it was any coincidence that when you took off overseas we started on that stretch of seven losses and when you returned we started winning again. I felt a little sorry for you on game days being the solitary runner due to the fact that I do like to make a few changes and send a few messages every now and then. Along with Gatts and Gary Shephard you were a great support to me this year and I wish you and Renee the best of luck with the pending birth of your first child. Philby, welcome to the real world!

______51 2012 YEAR BOOK

SYDNEY HILLS EAGLES AFL CLUB Inc. To Gary Shephard, thanks for helping out on match days as the team manager. I don’t think I have seen too many fathers as proud of his son as you are and to listen to you barrack every time Josh went near the ball was very enjoyable.

To my captain Ryan Fitton, I would like to say a big thanks mate. To be honest I was very lucky to have Fitto as my Captain and if it wasn’t for his injury suffered on camp whilst skylarking then I wouldn’t have been so fortunate. To have a three time premiership player was a great thing for the Premier Division side. Fitto quite often played injured this year as he didn’t want to let anyone down and there aren’t too many better on field role models than Fitto at our club. He really sets the example each and every week. Off the field…..well that is a different story…..ha-ha. Good luck to you, Alana and Max on the next arrival. One is easy Fitto, two is a handful.

Thanks to Jason Moeller who took on the Division One coaching job at late notice. Your level of support and selflessness really belies your years. It was good to see you pull the boots back on this year and I hope to see you give up the magnet board next year and concentrate on playing. You have a lifetime to coach but not as many years to play so make the most of it whilst you can. I wouldn’t mind having you and your brother sitting in the forward line every week.

I would like to thanks Nathan Halliday and his team of physios who continue to turn up week in and week out and give us a tremendous amount of support.

I would like to thank the Board, the Coterie club, the Supporters, the Volunteers and our Sponsors for a great year. As a football club we should be very satisfied with our year. To make the finals in our first year of NEAFL, to win an Under 18’s flag and to remain reasonably competitive in the other grades was a fantastic achievement and you all play a key part in the above.

I would like to wish Glenn Garner the best of luck as well as Miriam & Logan. I have worked closely with Glenn for over five years now both in business and at the Eagles and I can assure everyone reading this, I have never met anyone as relentless in their pursuit of perfection who compares to Garns. We are all custodians of this football club and I have always said that the greatest measure of a person is the legacy that they leave behind. I am sure we all agree that Glenn’s legacy can never be questioned at the Eagles. Five years, four grand finals, three premierships and finals in our first year of NEAFL is an outstanding record and something I am sure he will look back on with great pride. Thanks Garns for your ongoing level of support and the wisdom you imparted along the way.

I would like to say thanks to my beautiful wife Stacy and my two wonderful children Liam and Chloe. I am very fortunate to have such a supportive family and one that shares my passion for football. Stacy and I met when we were seventeen and she has been to 90% of the games that I have played in or coached. She has also had to put up with the training nine months of the year and everything else that goes along with being part of a football club for nearly twenty years. Liam and Chloe used to think that their Dad’s second job was football and I have been very lucky along the way to take them both up to collect Premiership medallions. I look forward to the summer break, as I am sure they do.

And finally, I encourage all the players on our list to put in a big pre-season next year, set your goals, aim high and never accept anything less than perfection. It is this mindset that will see us successful as an entire football club and ensure we head back up towards the top of Sydney AFL Premier Division.

Following three consecutive premierships at Sydney AFL Premier Division level, our inaugural season in the NEAFL was always going to throw up a number of questions and be a huge challenge for the new squad. How would we perform against the AFL Reserves teams? How much of an impact would increased travel have on the group? Where did we stand against the Canberra and Northern Conference teams? How would a squad with so many new faces come together and perform as a team?

Pre-season was a gruelling challenge under new strength and conditioning coach Sean Le’ Strange. Approximately 20 new players were added to the squad from across Sydney, interstate and even international recruits from Papua New Guinea.

Our NEAFL debut in Round one against cross-town rivals Sydney Uni produced a scrappy win, but we were off and running. Round two was a far tougher affair against the eventual premiers Queanbeyan who proved too strong and too quick winning by a respectable 23 points. Round three produced one of the highlights of the season with a gutsy two goal away win over reigning premiers Ainslie. The experience of new recruit Ryan Houlihan combined with five goals from Matt Edwins warned the competition that the Eagles were not to be Jamie Vlatko – Club Champion taken lightly.

Round four saw our first encounter against the UWS Giants in a match that for the first time was played after the AFL fixture at Blacktown International Sports Park. The Giants jumped out of the blocks early and established an unassailable lead, eventually winning by 36 points. The Eagles were back on the winners list in Round five with a comfortable 34 point win over Belconnen, which was followed by another victory against Tuggeranong in Round six that saw the Eagles sitting four wins and two losses and firmly inside the top five. Callen Young Our next game in Round eight proved a tough assignment with the Runner Up and Players’ Player Eagles going down by over 80 points away to Queanbeyan who were by now firmly installed as Premiership favourites. A thumping 110 point win over Sydney Uni in Round nine, backed up by a further 109 point victory over an under-strength UWS Giants in round 10 brought ______56 2012 YEAR BOOK

SYDNEY HILLS EAGLES AFL CLUB Inc. the smiles back. The Eagles made it three on the trot with a 26 point win over Belconnen in Round 11 to remain well inside the top 5.

Consecutive losses to Eastlake in Round 13 and Ainslie in Round 14 convinced the Eagles that these were the sides to beat if we were to mount a serious challenge come September. A comfortable win over Tuggeranong in Round 15 was followed by a shock loss to Sydney Uni in Round 17. This was a critical point in the season with the team sitting seven wins and six losses with two-cross conference games to come. Another season highlight was realised on our trip north to the Gold Coast in Round 18 that produced a rousing 35 point win over Labrador. The Eagles then produced the Northern Conference quinella defeating Mt Gravatt in Round 19 at Bruce Purser Reserve by 52 points to avenge the loss earlier in the season. This Rowan Bilkey – Most Consistent win also assured the Eagles of a finals berth in their inaugural NEAFL season – a wonderful effort and one that exceeded the majority of expectations.

The season proved tough from this point on with a solid defeat at the hands of the rampaging Swans Reserves in Round 20. Despite the loss, the game was played on ANZ Stadium as the curtain- raiser to the Swans v Collingwood blockbuster which was a thrill for all. Our final home and away game for the year was on the road to Eastlake but the Eagles were unable to come home with the points. The first final was a return match-up against Eastlake which was always going to be a tough ask and despite taking the lead at several times during the game, the team was unable to hold on and eventually went down in a gallant defeat by 14 points.

All the people involved with the NEAFL team in 2012 are too numerous to mention but they must all be sincerely thanked for their hard work, dedication, sacrifice and efforts. Special mention to Head Coach Glenn Garner, Captain Jon Vlatko, all the players, Dean Costello - PPP assistant coaches, support and medical staff and everyone that helped contribute to the season.

We answered many of the questions, established a winning reputation and surprised more than a few people. We now know what is required for success at this level. Congratulations to all the NEAFL award winners for 2012 and we look forward to seeing everyone back bigger and better than ever in 2013.

SYDNEY HILLS EAGLES AFL CLUB Inc. PLAYER MILESTONES REACHED DURING 2012

The Match Statistics sections for each grade are included alphabetically within the overall team reports elsewhere in the Year Book. However Page 63 has those same statistics, but ranked according to total number of senior games played for the Sydney Hills Eagles in the NEAFL and including those AFL Sydney Premier Division games played for the Sydney Hills Eagles and the East Coast Eagles. Also including any First Grade games played for Baulkham Hills Falcons (BHAFC) prior to and including 1999.

Following the statistics upgrade, we now also record and recognise those Eagles games played across all grades. Some players may appear twice in the milestones.

We have made the decision to cease including BHAFC junior matches played after season 2008. Eventually, as players who have progressed through from the BHAFC junior club take retirement, these statistics will become pure Eagles games played.

However it is still historically important to also maintain a register of the number of games played for the “Club”. The definition of the “Club” for this purpose is all matches played with the Eagles (either Sydney Hills or East Coast) and BHAFC in any grade, or age group prior to and including 2008. These individual statistics are shown against each player’s name in the respective Match Statistics for each grade.

The manner in which milestones will be acknowledged in this and future Year Books is as follows:

 50 / 100 / 150 / 200 etc senior First Grade games with the Eagles only.  50 / 100 / 150 / 200 etc senior First Grade games. (Includes any First Grade games at BHAFC.)  50 / 100 / 150 / 200 etc total Eagles games across all grades  200 / 250 / 300 etc Club games across all Eagles’ grades and any matches played at BHAFC prior to 2008.

Congratulations to the following players who reached personal milestones during season 2012.
