An understanding of the core principles of cross-over songs and their relevance in contemporary culture is essential for Christian songwriters. Six albums marked by spiritual overtones or undertones, representing a broad spectrum of contemporary cross-over music, were examined. Selected songs were critiqued by analyzing the album of origin, lyrical content, author’s expressed worldview, and level of commercial success. Renaissance art also provided a historical parallel to modern day songwriting. Recommendations were developed for Christian songwriters to craft songs with greater effectiveness to impact the culture while adhering to a biblical worldview. CHRISTIAN CROSS-OVER SONGWRITING 4 A Survey of Christian Cross-Over Songwriting An exploration of Christian cross-over music can provide an objective framework for evaluating songs and developing guidelines for Christian songwriters so they can enhance their effectiveness in communicating with their audiences. -

Music for Boys, Girls, Queens and Kings: New Album Reviews
Music For Boys, Girls, Queens And Kings: New Album Reviews Music | Bittles’ Magazine: The music column from the end of the world After a short break where Titel Kulturmagazin went on an 18-30 holiday by mistake, we return this week with more album reviews than any sane person could ever need. After having to endure the tortured strangulations of EBM, and the hen party screeches of Ibiza for the last fortnight, fantastic albums by 2814, Wild Beasts, Bryan Ferry, Dinosaur Jr., Conduct, Gerd Janson, John Roberts, Riley Reinhold, Carl Craig are like manna to our ears. By JOHN BITTLES So, before we start trying to show off our sunburn, pass on an STD, or bore you with our holiday snaps, we had better begin… Last year’s Birth Of A New Day was an album which succeeded in immersing the listener within its own retro-futurist world. Overflowing with melancholy and wistfulness, it took the sounds associated with the burgeoning vaporwave scene, and created something visceral and real. This summer the duo of Telepath and HKE once again don their 2814 moniker to release the eagerly anticipated follow-up LP. Poignant, and dripping with a vivid sense of nostalgia, fans of Birth Of A New Day will be delighted to find that Rain Temple is every bit as good. Before The Rain opens proceedings with a feeling of hushed longing, somehow conjuring the image of standing lost within a cold metropolis where nobody knows your name. Further in, Guided By Love sounds like hearing long forgotten, but once beloved childhood songs coming from some far-off place, This Body can cause the unguarded to break down in tears, while Inside The Sphere brims with quiet resonance. -
THE COLLECTED POEMS of HENRIK IBSEN Translated by John Northam
1 THE COLLECTED POEMS OF HENRIK IBSEN Translated by John Northam 2 PREFACE With the exception of a relatively small number of pieces, Ibsen’s copious output as a poet has been little regarded, even in Norway. The English-reading public has been denied access to the whole corpus. That is regrettable, because in it can be traced interesting developments, in style, material and ideas related to the later prose works, and there are several poems, witty, moving, thought provoking, that are attractive in their own right. The earliest poems, written in Grimstad, where Ibsen worked as an assistant to the local apothecary, are what one would expect of a novice. Resignation, Doubt and Hope, Moonlight Voyage on the Sea are, as their titles suggest, exercises in the conventional, introverted melancholy of the unrecognised young poet. Moonlight Mood, To the Star express a yearning for the typically ethereal, unattainable beloved. In The Giant Oak and To Hungary Ibsen exhorts Norway and Hungary to resist the actual and immediate threat of Prussian aggression, but does so in the entirely conventional imagery of the heroic Viking past. From early on, however, signs begin to appear of a more personal and immediate engagement with real life. There is, for instance, a telling juxtaposition of two poems, each of them inspired by a female visitation. It is Over is undeviatingly an exercise in romantic glamour: the poet, wandering by moonlight mid the ruins of a great palace, is visited by the wraith of the noble lady once its occupant; whereupon the ruins are restored to their old splendour. -

Living Memories Reflections of Students Volunteering in VA Hospitals Federated Wholesale, Inc. Living Memories Reflections of Students Volunteering in VA Hospitals Department of Veterans Affairs Voluntary Service Office and United Students for Veterans’ Health i ii Foreword The evolution of health care and the expanding VA health care system have provided increased opportunities for American citizens looking for ways to serve veterans by sharing their knowledge, skills and creative talents. The Department of Veterans Affairs Voluntary Service Program (VAVS) provides a valuable resource for dedicated volunteers interested in help- ing others. The VAVS Program has attracted a growing corps of dedicated volunteers with an increased capacity to meet the changing needs of veterans. Established in 1946 with eight charter members, the VAVS Program today is comprised of 61 national veterans, civic and service organizations. As the largest volunteer program in the Federal government, the VAVS Program is sustained by the commitment, energy and enthusiasm of a diverse group of volunteers. These volunteers serve in VA health care facilities, home-based programs, nursing homes, veteran outreach centers and in VA national cemeteries. Collectively, these dedicated volunteers have contributed more than 521 million hours of volunteer service since the program's inception. The numbers only tell part of the story. The level of caring and unshakable devotion to helping others that is demonstrated daily by VAVS volunteers is immeasurable. Without their assistance, the quality of services and programs designed to enhance patient care would be greatly compromised. We are particularly interested in increasing volunteer participation by young adults throughout the country. VAVS has great opportunities to offer the leaders of tomorrow not only through the experiences of the actual volunteer activity, but also through the development of relationships with a group of very special people, our nation's heroes. -

The West Wing Weekly 2.07: The Portland Trip Guests: Secretary of the Army Eric Fanning, Congressman Brendan Boyle (D-PA), and Former Congressman Steve Gunderson (R-WI) [Intro Music] HRISHI: You’re listening to The West Wing Weekly, my name is Hrishikesh Hirway. JOSH: And my name is Joshua Malina. HRISHI: Today, we’re talking about Episode 7 of Season 2. It’s called “The Portland Trip.” JOSH: It first aired on November 15th, 2000. The teleplay is by Aaron Sorkin, the story by Paul Redford, the direction by Paris Barclay. Paris is a very, very talented guy who also directed the “I See You” episode from Scandal Season 5. HRISHI: He won a DGA award for directing for this episode. JOSH: Nice. HRISHI: Here’s the synopsis from TV Guide: “The President is taking a red-eye to Portland, Oregon, to deliver an education address, and Sam must go with him because he can't get the speech right. Toby must also go, to help Sam, and C.J. has to go, too, because she's being punished for making disparaging remarks about the President's alma mater, Notre Dame. Back at the White House, Josh spars with a gay Republican congressman over a bill on homosexual marriage, and Leo monitors a minor crisis in the Persian Gulf involving an oil tanker.” JOSH: I like the phrase, “The President is taking a red-eye,” as if he’s flying commercial.
