GPS Rugby Brief History

GPS Rugby is the successor in name to GPS Old Boys Rugby Club and to to the Past Grammar School Football Club and it is the oldest surviving Rugby Club in Queensland and also one of the oldest Rugby Clubs in Australia. The Club was officially formed in 1887 and consisted of a combination of both past and present Brisbane Grammar School players although a number of them represented Queensland as Past Grammar players in 1885 and 1886.

In 1889 the Past Grammar School Football Club was established as a separate identity distinct from the old side with its mix of past and present players. The formation of the Club was formalised at a meeting held at the Treasury Hotel in Brisbane on the 5th March 1891 and Mr. R.H. Roe, the Headmaster of Brisbane Grammar School was elected as President. Sir Charles Lilley and Sir Samuel Griffith, among others, were elected as Vice Presidents. It was decided that the Club colours would be red and white. Rugby was not played in Queensland from 1916 until reintroduced in 1928 at which time, under a new name, the BGS Old Boys’ Football Club again took its place in the Brisbane competition.

In 1930 the constitution of the Club was changed to allow past students from the other GPS schools to become members and although the name was retained that year it was later changed to GPS Old Boys’ Rugby Club and it played under that name for the first time in the 1931 season and has continued to be known and play under that name to the present day in the recognised blue and green jerseys. The constitution was again changed some years later and membership of the club is now unrestricted.

Forty-six of the Club’s members have played for Australia and one hundred and ninety- two have played for Queensland. Seven have captained Australian senior teams, two the Australian sevens team and one has represented and captained England and another Scotland. In all nine former members have played international football whilst playing with other clubs.

In more recent times the overall strength of the Club has been reflected in the results of the Doughty Shield Club Championship competition coming first in 2006 and 2008 and not being out of the top 3 for 10 years. In recent years GPS has fielded between 9 and 11 teams, regularly with more than half in the final series. In 2014, 9 of 10 teams made the finals.

In 2014 GPS Old Boys Rugby Club amalgamated with Ashgrove GPS Junior Rugby Union Club to form GPS Rugby Club making it arguably the largest club in Australia if not the Southern Hemisphere with almost 1500 players.

Rugby Report

GPS Rugby Club has experienced a rapid and significant transformation during its most recent history. The structural and personnel changes that have been implemented have been done so with a view towards positioning the club as a financially prosperous entity that can continue its role as a community hub for years to come. The commercial imperatives of running contemporary sporting clubs are highlighted by the struggles that many of our neighbouring organisations endure to provide core services to its members. GPS is indeed fortunate to have in place a governance structure comprised of individuals who are not only Rugby savvy but also possess strong business acumen.

In my inaugural year as the Director of Coaching at GPS, it has been heartening to hear from the club board that despite the need for the club to have a strategic commercial focus, the primary ‘business’ of the club remains that of winning games of Rugby. Continuing the business theme, it has been also conveyed to me on more than one occasion by the President of the Club, Mr. Peter McWhirter, that the ‘club’s greatest asset is its players’. My experiences in 2014 have certainly validated this claim.

Culture is a term that has entered the current sporting lexicon, particularly at the elite level, as clubs search to create an environment where certain beliefs, ideals and values are established and adhered to. Organisational culture in a sporting context may mean different things to different people; however, at the core of any culture are people. Little research is required to conclude that the character of the people involved with your club is pivotal to its success. Irrespective of a person’s status or ability, if they don’t possess traits that are aligned with those espoused and enacted by the club it becomes impossible for them to make a positive contribution. I am more than happy to publically state my admiration for the many individuals who comprise the GPS Rugby Club. Without exception, they are people of the highest calibre. More specifically, I salute the players, many of whom are not only wonderful Rugby players but young men who exude respect for the game, their club and peers. GPS makes no apologies for prioritising character as a key determinant for those wishing to join the club; it is a mantra that will serve us well.

The merit of the 2014 season may well be open to interpretation. With nine out of ten teams qualifying for finals, one could argue that it has been spectacularly successful. Conversely, a sole premiership to the Premier Reserve Grade side suggests that we promised plenty but failed to deliver. My contention is that we look at 2014 as a pivotal year in our development. GPS’ playing depth is to be lauded and would be the envy of many of our rivals. Having nine teams involved in the post season is a feat not to be trivialised and significant credit must be paid to the players and coaching staff. I would hope that we would never become blasé about such an achievement and the club should be commended for providing equal opportunities for all players regardless of their playing ability. Ultimately though, premierships are the barometer by which our football program will be measured. To achieve our goal of becoming a club that consistently wins titles, there is still much to do. I have identified the following as being key target areas in 2015:

• Greater engagement between the Premier Grade Senior teams and the rest of the club • Establishment of a strategic program to enhance coach development • Further refinement of an all-club selection process • Cultivating an attitude amongst players that both elevation and demotion provide an opportunity • Greater investment in our medical arm with a more systematic approach to injury monitoring, prevention and rehabilitation • Providing more opportunities for players to engage in individualised position-specific training • Seeking to maximise the club’s engagement with our strength and conditioning staff to provide further benefits for our players

One of the key objectives of the GPS Rugby program is for the club to be perceived as one where all players’ individual ambitions and goals are catered for, irrespective of ability or playing history. To that end, players whose goal is to represent the club in Premier Grade need to feel as though they are afforded the same degree of support as those striving to become a Wallaby. It is imperative that we provide opportunities for the elite in addition to our regular club players. The current Rugby landscape demands that for a club to be successful it needs to have clearly defined pathways in place for players seeking to attain representative status. I am of the belief that we can develop all of our players to the level they aspire to and still retain the unique character of the club which makes it so special. GPS is imbued with among other things a spirit of tolerance, mateship, inclusiveness and family and these traits must be cultivated and maintained.

10 GPS RUGBY CLUB INC. ANNUAL REPORT 2014

I would like to thank all our coaches, managers, strength and conditioning and administration staff and the board for their tireless efforts during 2014. The Rugby season is an exacting one for all concerned and the spirit of collegiality that pervades GPS Rugby club reflects positively on all involved. In my role, I have witnessed firsthand the commitment and dedication of our coaching staff and it has been a pleasure to work with such a devoted group who have embraced the notion of critically reflecting on our behaviours and practices to seek improvement. I look forward to working with our coaching staff in 2015 with much anticipation. Special acknowledgement should be afforded to the coaching and management team of the Premier Reserve Grade side who captured the clubs only premiership this year. Nic Fogarty, John Slater, Sio Kite and Simon Knapp in conjunction with the playing group produced a stellar season losing only the one fixture. We bid farewell to some of our coaching staff; most notably Shane Arnold, Brett Picone, Shane Drahm, Nic Fogarty and Sio Kite. GPS recognises and appreciates your efforts and we wish you well in your future endeavours.

In conclusion, I would like to thank everyone involved with GPS Rugby club for making me feel welcome. It has been a pleasure to work with you and be part of a special organisation.

Strength and Conditioning

From a Strength & Conditioning point of view the 2014 rugby season began planning for the Colts Academy program.

Working with Head Academy Coach, Matt Turner, there was a strong emphasis on ensuring the players felt welcome at GPS, had solid technique and were improving their physicality.

Judging the early results the Colts program enjoyed we feel the program was a success.

With the dual goals of 1) ensuring every member of a GPS team has access to appropriate S&C and 2) building a relationship with QUT we set about interviewing potential candidates from the QUT Exercise Science Department.

Through the program Casey Sear, Jake McManus, Nick Verry and Pat Campbell worked with 4th, 2nd, 1st Grades and Colts respectively.

In addition to the QUT students we also had Lee Dyson, Nicolai Morris and Harrison Westbrook train the 3rd Grade, Premier Reserve and the Women’s team respectively.

Matt Winkley stepped up from his previous Colts position to become the Premier Grade S&C Coach.

We are proud that Matt Winkley gained further honours in being selected to work in the NRC with Brisbane City; that 3 of our interns have applied to work with us next year, while the others have moved onto paid work.

Working with the Director of Coaching, Michael Cook, we ensured every member had the opportunity to train in the gym under supervision, improved their fitness over the season, had access to rehab and return to play protocols, and ‘enjoyed’ at least one ice bath during the season.

The S&C staff also ran water, delivered messages and designed the pre-game warm ups.

Thanks to the General Manager, CEO and Director of Coaching for their continued support of the program as we look to increase our program for 2015.

Grant Jenkins Director of Strength and Conditioning

11 GPS RUGBY CLUB INC. ANNUAL REPORT 2014

Colts Report

The Colts Academy established by the club after the 2013 season was designed to produce three competitive Colts teams for season 2014. This aim was achieved with all teams competing in semi finals for the first time for some years. Premier Colts were Minor Premiers and subsequently finished in third place. Colts 1 finished third and Colts 2 fourth in their competitions.

The addition of several quality players to the program, via the Academy and positive recruitment, allowed the coaching staff to expand the style of rugby being played which has in turn resulted in some quality performances and strong victories from all teams.

Premier Colts led the way during the year being undefeated after thirteen rounds before “hitting the wall” against the other strong teams (UQ, Brothers and Sunnybank) at season’s end. Long term injuries and disruptions to the playing ranks accounted partially for the fade out but those players who took the field gave their all and brought great credit to themselves and the club.

With at least nine of this year’s squad eligible for Colts rugby in 2015 the future looks bright indeed. The Colts 1 and Colts 2 players, with a year’s experience under their belts, will be ready to take the step up and continue the success across the board.

Colts 1, after a disrupted start, were in a dogfight for most of the season just to secure a place in the finals and needed to win their final fixture (v.Sunnybank) to ensure that status. This was achieved as was the defeat of the same team in the minor semi final. UQ, the eventual premiers and surprise losers of the major semi final, proved too strong in the preliminary final for a young and inexperienced GPS team.

Colts 2 were looking to build on the disaster that was 2013 and this was done in spades. This team had a “cast of thousands” and managing the player roster was a feat in itself. This was done admirably by the coaches and managers and success followed.

A number of players in this squad were capable of playing Colts 1 or Premier Colts but chose, for their own reasons, not to pursue that path. This is an issue that will need to be addressed before next season to prevent any rift in the Colts ranks.

During the season, upwards of eighty players were registered which, of itself, provided selection headaches. The concept of a fourth team was considered but dismissed just as quickly. Injuries and unavailability proved this to be a wise decision.

For the first time for many seasons, the club included players from schools that do not offer strong rugby programs and who, although outside the two year window, were granted dispensation to play Colts rugby. All acquitted themselves very well and will be candidates for Premier Colts next season. Full marks to the QRU and their foresightedness in this regard.

Congratulations to the coaching and support staff from each team for the work you put in and the success of each team. A solid base going forward.

Thank you to the Club Committee and especially to General Manager Matt Turner for the support given to the Colts Program in 2014.

Terry Donovan Colts Director

Juniors Report

With the close of another fantastic rugby season for the junior playing members we pause to review the year that was.

This year was the start of a new era in GPS Rugby as the junior club and senior club amalgamated to become one of the countries’ largest clubs if not the southern hemisphere. As a result the connection between old and young has solidified and enabled junior coaches and alike to tap into the vast and experienced player resources our senior players encompass. We see this as continuing stronger and stronger over the coming years with more initiatives around assisting our junior coaches and expanding the “clinics” for specialist positions held by our Premier and Reds players.

2014 was again a celebratory year for the Gallopers young and old and it is reassuring to see the amount of depth GPS Rugby has in its stables. This year our junior playing numbers totalled 1190 spread over 86 teams. Another growth from the 2013 season playing numbers.

Of the teams eligible to compete for Premierships (U10-U17) we had the following:

Premiers Runners Up u10 Div 1 - 10 Blue u10 Div 7 - 10 Silver u10 Div 6 - 10 Green u11 Div 1 - 11 Blue u12 Div 3 - 12 Maroon u11 Div 7 - 11 Green u13 Div 4 - 13 Red u12 Div 5 - 12 Gold u14 Div 4 - 14 Red U17 Div 2 - 17 Green u16 Div 2 - 16 Green

Even more impressive was, 11 of our U13-U17 teams playing in a finals series, GPS managed 11 teams qualifying. This is a huge reflection of the quality players, coaches, managers and support staff that give up their time each week for the betterment of GPS Rugby. We must remember that all of these people are parent volunteers. Without you we would not have the success that is shown above.

GPS have always figured highly in the Representative rugby pathways and 2014 was no exception. The club had players involved at the U12 Development Pathway, the U13, 14 and 16 Brisbane Teams, ARU Gold Squad level and selected to play with Representative City Teams that played against Country Teams as the curtain raiser to the Reds v Waratahs game at Suncorp Stadium.

Congratulations to those selected for City Teams who are shown on page 7 of this report.

The club has been delighted this year to complete a couple of projects around the place and be able to provide new ladies amenities finally. The new change room booths have been well received by many junior players and one can see their mind ticking over as they sit under their favourite number.

On your return in 2015 you’ll also notice some changes in the canteen which should make life a bit easier when each of us does our one stint on game day. These projects have been delivered solely through a Federal Grant driven by your Rugby Club and hopefully more will follow.

We would encourage you to all get involved in some way around the club as without people stepping forward to help out, the junior members would not function as well as it does. Those cones on a Saturday morning don’t get into a perfectly straight line on their own. Even more so I would encourage people to nominate for positions on the Committee to fill some upcoming vacancies.

A huge thank you to all those that have assisted this year and an even bigger thanks to each and every player. Not only have you produced some fantastic rugby and results, but you have done it with dignity and respect for others in true Gallopers spirit. We hope everyone has a Safe and Merry Christmas and Happy New Year and look forward to seeing you all in 2015 for another bumper Gallopers year.

Premier Grade

Coaches: Shane Arnold, Brett Picone, Shane Drahm, Alex Corley (M), Matt Winkley (S&C), Nicolai Morris (S&C), Kym Midgley (Physio), Ian Ross (Physio)

The 2014 Premier grade season started with much anticipation after 2013 showed promise for the Gallopers. After losing the 2013 grand final, the playing group came together positively after the complete grand final playing group from the year before had returned. The club also welcomed many new faces, increasing competition for positions and allowing strength and conditioning coach Matt Winkley to welcome them with a long, high intensity pre season.

After 3 trial matches in the late summer heat, round one came early this year on the 22 March against Bond University. The team started with a win against the Coast, followed with a BYE and then a loss to Souths the following week. This game was later recognized as the loss that would come back to haunt the team after leading 20 – 7 at half time, the Magpies showed their class and came back in the second half to win 30 – 28. The following week GPS bounced back with a hard fought win against Wests at Yoku Rd. The team welcomed the return of QLD Reds half back Nick Frisby who showed his class, by scoring an individual try to confirm the win late in the game. The score ended at 40 – 34 which was a pleasing result as the next week was another BYE for the Easter long weekend.

Post Easter, the season continued with a convincing 50 point win against North’s and then a replay of the 2013 grand final against the Easts Tigers. Sam Johnson showed why his partnership with Samu Kerevi in the centers was a force to be reckoned with after taking control of this game and scoring 14 out of 26 points with 2 great conversions from the sideline. The following week against University was the biggest shake up of the 2014 season, losing 50 – 10 which allowed the team to re-group and focus on the upcoming games. The next 3 games ended with victories before another BYE weekend.

After the bye, GPS got one back against the Magpies at Yoku Rd winning 31 – 26. Samu Kerevi again showed his class with multiple runs allowing the team to get on the front foot and eventually Samu converting his hard work with 2 tries. Another 50 point win against Wests followed as Tom Christie stood out with a 20 point haul out of 52 which built confidence in the team as they followed with a 38 point victory the following week against North’s. Again it was Tom Christie who had his kicking boots on with a personal tally of 10 points. After two convincing wins, the following three weeks rocked The Gallopers season with losses to Easts, University and Brothers. Captain Jono Ellis pulled the group together after these defeats and made it clear the season was not over and as a team they are better than this. The last game of the season was at Yoku Rd against Sunnybank, which also doubled as the clubs charity day. In front of a massive crowd for the final home game of the year, GPS showed they’re a genuine title contender with a convincing 39 – 24 victory. James Tuttle stood out in this game with a personal haul of 14 points with some long- range penalty goals. The crowd especially enjoyed this as they got behind the team and showed they would be right behind them entering the finals series.

The finals had arrived and a positive vibe around the club was pushing the team to achieve their very best. The first week of finals was played against the old rival Brothers with a 21 – 13 victory. James Tuttle was a stand out in this win as he controlled the team perfectly and tallied 11 points of his own through pin point penalty and conversion kicking. The following week was a preliminary final against Sunnybank and after a dominant first half lead; a classy Sunnybank side came home strongly and defeated GPS.

After 16 round games, 11 wins, 5 losses, 2 byes and 2 finals matches, the 2014 season had come to a close. Through the season’s highs and lows, 42 players took the field for premier grade with 13 players making their debut.

A very special thank you must go to Shane Arnold and coaching staff. Shane after three strong years with premier grade has decided to move on. He has developed the current playing group into a successful, close group, which will hopefully last for many years to come. Many thanks to the committee and club sponsors for their continued support as the clubs success would not be possible without you. The biggest thank you must go to Queensland Rugby’s biggest support group. The playing group knows that playing in front of a packed Yoku Rd is very special, especially when the crowd is on your side.

Giv’em heaps GPS!

Premier Reserve Grade

Coaches: Nick Fogarty, John Slater, Sio Kite, S Knapp (M), Michelle Bennie (M) Nicolai Morris (S&C)

With the thoughts of the 2013 Grand Final defeat to Souths still fresh in many players minds, season 2014 got off to a very rocky start with three losses to Brothers, Uni and Sunnybank in the trials. It was the first time for many years that Reggies had lost three in a row and going into the first round against Bond Uni the side was already in an injury crisis. The backline which ran on did not have one player from preseason and the coaching staff had begun to feel the pressure. To the credit of the boys stepping up from Brisbane First Grade, Reggies had a solid win with newbies Tom Christie and KJ playing exceptionally well.

The second week bye was well received and over the following weeks there was a steady return of players who had been out with injury. Good wins against South, Wests, Norths and Easts saw Reggies well positioned coming into the final three games of the round in very good shape. The emergence of Dylan Sikimeti, Kieran Johnson and Tom Christie was very pleasing while old stagers Liam Ferguson, Cam King and Damian Stower were once again showing the younger brigade how it was meant to be done. The final three games saw excellent victories over UQ, Sunnybank and Brothers and an undefeated first round had the side upbeat and looking forward to the next round.

The second round mirrored the first with yet again strong wins over Bond, Souths, Wests and Norths. Isaac Helu, Craig Hunt and Mark Donaldson had been playing the house down and Cam King was in career best form. The only issue with the Reggies outfit was keeping them all in the side. The round 15 encounter against Easts was highly anticipated as the round 6 clash at home had proved to be the toughest of all games played to date. The inclusion of Matt Hirst, Pat Selwood, Dan Gorman and return to form of Damian Stower proved to be too much for the Tigers with the boys running out eventual winners 24-5. Josh Pszczonka and Dave Howard were both strong upfront and Craig Hunt was starting to show some real class at the back.

The win over Uni at home was a gutsy performance and showed just how good the Reggies defence was. Stower, Murphy, Christie and Fuller all had strong games but it was Liam McWhirter who was the general on the day. The players really responded well to his direction and leadership and as a result the boys got the win. With only two games remaining of the regular season, whispers starter to become louder about an undefeated home and away year. In a player meeting at the start of the year Dave Howard spoke about the possibility of this feat and with Brothers and Sunnybank only standing in the side’s way this could be a real possibility.

The Brothers clash at Crosby was a tough and brutal affair with both Gav Murphy and Mitch Fuller being knock out and taken from the field and while the boys had played exceptionally well in the second half to chase down and get the lead with only seconds remaining they went down on full time 23-25. While everyone was disappointed with the loss it was a good wakeup call going into the finals. The last game of the season proper was against Sunnybank at home and the boys kept their unbeaten home run intact. On a side note, Reggies have lost only two games in the past five seasons at home and have a winning rate of 85% in the past seven years in the home and away competition which is credit to all who have played over this time.

In the first final Uni got off to a fast start kicking some early penalties to lead 6-0. The experience of some of our senior players saw the forwards start to get on top and lay the platform for the backs to take charge. As we have said all year forwards win the game and the backs decide by how much. Once again Gav Murphy and Kieran Johnson were outstanding while Liam McWhirter and Craig Hunt showed class and composure. The Grand Final was a typical final battle with both sides scoring two converted tries. The difference was two penalties to Tom Christie and the usual strong effort from the senior players backed up by sterling performances from the young guns. A third Premiership in four years was a reward which we all hoped for and were happy to achieve.

I’d like to acknowledge the efforts of our coaching staff Sio Kite and John Slater for their outstanding work and contribution this season. The respect you have from the boys and myself is without question and the success we have shared in this season is a direct result of what you bring each training and game day. To Simon and Michele your efforts are greatly appreciated and have not gone unnoticed by those who are a part of this team. Thank you for all you do behind the scenes to ensure the boys are prepared for success.

Brisbane First Grade

Coaches: Stu Hendricks, Kim Jones, Allan Berriman(M) Nick Verry (S&C)

After a slow start to the 2014 season losing to both Logan and Souths, the GPS 1st grade found their footing and, capably lead by captain Brad Houlihan and vice captain Nick Dangerfield, commenced a magnificent nine game winning streak beating the likes of Uni and Sunnybank early in the piece with all players standing up. Players like Matt Baker, Richie Allen and Jake Becroft also ensured direction in the forwards.

Under the capable guidance of Stu Hendricks and Kim Jones, along with a bit of help from a supply of red frogs, the team was able to reverse the results of the Logan and Souths games early in the season and cementing a place in the final four.

Whilst it is always frustrating in the grade teams not being able to field the same team week to week due to the needs of the higher grades, all players who came into the side were able to hold their heads high each week. This however was offset by seeing a number of our guys getting good playing time at the higher level and when they returned they were able to bring with them a knowledge base of ideas and concepts.

Despite a couple of end of season losses the team finished in third spot and were destined to take on Souths in the knockout minor semi final at Ballymore. It was to say the least an interesting game with a total of 4 yellow cards and a score line that fluctuated during the game. With about 8 minutes to play we received a penalty in kicking range which would have put us out to a 6 point lead. The kick was missed and in the subsequent play, including an extra 6 odd minutes, Souths were able to maintain possession and subsequently score near the posts with the conversion giving them a win. The guys put in a massive effort on the day and were extremely unlucky.

This team will be back bigger and better in 2015 and hopefully go that couple of steps extra. The MVP award for this year went to Nick Dangerfield and the best forward to Matt Baker. To all players who stood up for us during the year a big thank from the coaching staff. We look forward to seeing you all next year.

2014 was a year of great learning, growth, and fulfillment. It also was an amazing rollercoaster to be a part of, featuring some crushing defeats, but culminating in a plan coming to fruition and the a team that went all the way back to a Grand Final.

After a Premiership in 2013, with a new coaching and management team and high turnover of players from the year before 2nd grade 2014 was always going to take some time to gel and become what we knew they could be.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the three men who were an integral part of the management team, Tim Sheppard (Backs), Ryan Webster (Manager), and Jake McManus (Strength and Conditioning). ‘Shep’ was on a steep learning curve this year, his first as a coach, and to his credit he did an amazing job every week 1) getting a backline on the field, and 2) having them play to the high standard they did. ‘Webbo’ was the engine of this team, and I must on behalf of Tim and I thank him for his efforts, no man at this club does more behind the scenes than ‘Webbo’ to say he made our jobs easier was an understatement. Jake was new to the club this year, but once finding his feet became a valued member of GPS and I hope is given more scope in the coming years to develop himself and the players.

In 2014 we used over 70+ players (32 of which got B&F points), and most Thursday we would name players only to wait until an hour before kickoff to find out if they would turn up. Whilst this created some stress, it also allowed us to develop a mentality that there would be no excuses. It also meant we spent a lot of time working on the fundamentals of the game, tackling, passing and rucking, all skills taken for granted but rarely worked on now days. By consistently applying themselves in these drills week after week the level of improvement in individual skills from the players was evident and even in some of those loses gave us great hope that once it clicked this was a team to be watched.

For the most part of the season we were on the outside looking in on the top 4, only making a brief appearance early in the second round. With two regular season rounds to go we found ourselves needing to win both games and secure a bonus point whilst also needing a game to go our way. What happened filled the management team with extreme confidence as the team clicked and started playing the consistent football we knew they were capable of outclassing Brothers and Sunnybank to take out 4th spot by a margin of 3 points from Souths.

Fast forward a week to Ballymore and 5 minutes before half time down 17-7 to Logan in the preliminary knock out final, and we again saw a team that exuded character. In the next 35 minutes we score 20 unanswered points and for the first time I can remember, a Logan team getting out muscled at their own game.

We now stood one game from a Grand Final against a team we had yet to beat. Our game plan worked perfectly and although University took an early lead it was only a matter of time before we flexed our muscle and proceeded to take the game away from them. In the end prevailing 21-11 and securing our place in the Grand Final.

Unfortunately this is where the fairy tale ended; coming up against a Norths team containing over 700 premier grade caps, our team played the game of their lives. At half time 5-3 down and with a monsoon pouring over Ballymore, our boys just came up short. One cannot describe how intensely proud we are as their management team of their efforts that night. The bounce of a ball here, a missed tackle there and it may have been different.

I would also like to acknowledge two stalwarts and one young legend of the club who hung their boots up for good at the end of this game. The 2014 2nd Grade Grand Final was the final game Angus ‘Gus’ Porteous, David ‘The Scrum Doctor’ Jordan, and Tom ‘Smokey’ Frisby.

To all the players involved this year with the 2nd grade team, I would like to thank you all for the dedication to your trade, and for the immense enjoyment that you bought us each and every week.

The 2014 season showed great promise for the GPS 3rd Grade side. We started the season with a large group of players in the preseason and trials which provided us with depth as more and more 3rd Grade players found themselves selected in higher grades.

Up to the half way mark of the season following a successful trail period, we were quite confident that we could successfully defend the 2013 premiership. At this point in the season we had only dropped one game which was to University where they got over us with a 90 meter intercept try after we had all of the momentum and hot on attack.

The second half of the season saw the entire 3rd grade competition increase significantly in skill and intensity. The games were a lot closer which was shown in our come from behind win against Logan at home in the dying seconds and then two disappointing losses against Souths and University.

At the end of the regular season we finished on 13 wins and three losses which had us in 3rd place overall. A lack of bonus points throughout the season hurt us from securing 2nd spot and with that the 2nd chance option in the finals series.

In the first week of the final series we came up against a much bigger Logan side however we remained confident in continuing deep into the finals, however in the end that was not to occur. We were extremely competitive in this match with a half time score of 7 to 5 against us. However in the second half we took a couple of poor options that really hurt us and gave Logan the motivation to take the win.

All in all the season was one of a lot of highs and some really painful lows especially in the semi-final. During the season we had a total of 63 players pull on the 3rd grade jumper which shows significant depth in the club. The friendships, professionalism and commitment with this group of player were something that I really enjoyed to be a part of all season. So with that in mind I would like to thank all the players that supported 3rd grade both on and off the field thought out 2014.

To Andrew Poulton, Chris Spurling, Sam Tewson, Matt Richards, Elliott O’Shea and Conor Reynolds for leading this group and providing continual support to the coaching staff. I would also like to acknowledge that Chris Spurling and Matt Richards were named as the joint 2014 Best and Fairest for 3rd Grade.

I would like to provide a special thank you to Rory Maguire (Coach), Ryan Webster (Manager) and Jeff Frisby (Manager) for the support that you provided to the team and me during the season. I also, thank Anthony Herbert, Matt Turner, Michael Cook, James Thomson and Tim Sheppard for all of the support that they provided to the club and to 3rd Grade throughout 2014.

Thanks again and I hope to see you all running around in 2015.

Qld Premier Colts

Coaches: Brendan Kiernan, Kelevi Tuicolo, Lewis Torkington, Terry Donovan (M), Chris Eaves (M), Grant Jenkins (Strength & Conditioning), Pat Campbell (S&C)

The season commenced with three trial matches after several weeks of pre-season training and Academy sessions. Many players were given the opportunity to stake a place in the team but, come round 1, the composition of the Premier Colts XV was settled. There were some players returning from last season, some who had been a part of the Academy and others who were new to the club.

The first fixture was against new club Bond University at the Bond campus and a hard fought win was notable for two tries each to both Doug Rayment and Dom Sester who became stalwarts of the side throughout the season.

The team went on a run of thirteen consecutive victories, included in which were some memorable scoring sprees against Norths, Wests and Easts as well as one point nail-biters against both Souths (first round) and Bond University (second round).

With three fixtures to play, Premier Colts were undefeated and assured of the minor premiership. From that point on (subsequently five matches), they were unable to win again and finished the season in third place. Given the hopes which the team and staff (and the club as a whole) held for success, it was a disappointing end to what had been an outstanding season.

The loss of powerful lock Josh Tregenza at the end of the first round for the remainder of the season due to a serious leg injury, coupled with flyhalf James Tuttle’s promotion to Premier Grade knocked the stuffing out of the players some of whom seemed to lose confidence. Earlier in the season, prop Dylan Sikimeti had been permanently seconded to Premier Reserves.

Combative hooker/flanker Jayden Rodwell was also lost to injury for the season early in the second round and, while games against the lesser teams were won easily enough, the big three of University, Brothers and Sunnybank each proved a bridge too far.

Several flyhalf options were tried but none worked effectively enough to overcome the teams who had natural number 10s who could direct play with their kicking games. None of the losses was by a significant score and, with some luck, the results could have been turned around in every game. The club is very proud of the efforts of each and every one of the 2014 Premier Colts players.

The award winners for the season were as follows : Best and Fairest: Dom Sester; Best Back: Cameron Knox. Congratulations to these young men on their achievements. Also to James Tuttle and Campbell Magnay who were selected in the Qld Country squad to play in the NRC.

Congratulations also to Campbell, Dom Sester, Cameron Knox, Jason Tomane and Nick Richards on their selection in the North Brisbane Colts team for the Under 19 match against South Brisbane.

A massive vote of thanks to the coaching team of Brendan Kiernan, Kelevi Tuicolo and Lew Torkington for their work with the squad this year. These men are outstanding coaches who have made a positive and meaningful contribution to ongoing player development and welfare.

Another vital component of the coaching team is game analyst Chris Eaves who is a most valuable resource for the club with his data on both GPS and opposition. His under-standing and knowledge of players are unsurpassed. This is of great benefit to the coaches in reviewing performances and preparing game plans.

The core players of the 2014 squad were very professional in their approach to training and game preparation. They are an impressive group of young men who bonded well and sought success. Many have a bright rugby future beyond the Colts Program.

Brisbane Colts One

Coaches: Nigel Hogan, Matt Turner, Dave Sheehan, Nathan Freney (M) Mick Clutterbuck(M), Pat Campbell (S&C)

As in 2013, Colts 1 had a successful year culminating in our appearance in the Preliminary Final against University at Ballymore.

For many players, the season actually commenced late in 2013 with the running of the Colts Academy. The early start to the season focusing on fitness, skills and technical development certainly paid dividends with all three colts’ teams featuring in the finals. Colts 1 saw a significant number of players return for the start of official club training in January.

In all a total of 47 players turned out for Colts 1 in 2014. The approach of Colts 1 training with and having the same calls, patterns, and plays as Premier Colts was a clear advantaged as the season progressed. It allowed for seamless transition up and down between the two teams with no time wasted on learning new calls etc. As injuries began to occur through the middle and later parts of the season players required for Premier Colts could easily fit in when called upon.

A very good pre-season saw Colts 1 win all of its trial games against University, Brothers and Sunnybank. There was a lot of competition for spots during the early rounds of the competition. Colts 1 finished the regular season in 4th place on 44 points which secured our spot in the finals. To make the finals the side won four out of their last five games including very big wins over Wests and Easts. The side played very attractive rugby with sound structures and the ability to throw the ball around when opportunities arose.

The season itself saw a number of close and at times heartbreaking losses including to the two teams that finished above us on the table, University and Bond. We accumulated 12 bonus points for the season including 5 for losses less than seven points with most of these losses being in the final few minutes. The side showed great character to bounce back from these and make the finals. They beat Sunnybank in the knock out semi-final in a tough defence orientated game.

Colts 1 were able to field close to their strongest side in the Preliminary final against University and for the first 20 minutes were all over them. However a very strong University side with many Premier Colts regulars in it eventually ran away with game. The coaches were very proud of the way all players did not stop trying in the game. Given the amount of injuries suffered to Colts players including a number of season ending injuries, all players should feel very proud of what they achieved this year. For those Colts 1 players moving on good luck with your future rugby careers.

For those players returning in 2015 you are well placed to build on what you achieved in 2014. Thankyou to the Rugby Committee for their support this year and also a special thanks to Michael Cook for assisting in a coaching role when required. Also thanks to the Premier Colts coaches Brendan, Kelevi and Torko and to the Colts 2 coaches Alex and MOB. As one of only 3 clubs to feature in all Colts finals in 2014 demonstrates what a strong Colts program is now in place at GPS. This holds well for an even better 2015.

Brisbane Colts Two

Coaches: Michael O’Brien, Alex Grace, John Lambourne(M), Pat Campbell (S&C)

The Colts 2 season 2014 began in a fashion which many clubs would envy. We had a total of 54 players on the books for one team, all willing and eager to play. A daunting prospect for the coaching and managing staff, the numbers would drop off slightly over the course of the season yet it still made playing time a valuable commodity on game day. Training for the first few weeks were a steep learning curve for both coaches and players. After some teething issues as a result of the numbers, the team started to build a real sense of unity and respect for one another. To the boys credit they all took in it their stride and played their allocated minutes with passion and intensity and by season’s end everyone loved the playing environment and wanted to be involved.

The boys knew that with so many numbers it was important to take every opportunity they could in order to win games and after a less than successful 2013 there was a real challenge to make 2014 something great. Results early on were fairly mixed and it soon became apparent there were only four teams in the hunt for the premiership, this made goal setting a bit easier as we could identify key games and build up to them accordingly.

A real highlight of the season was the last game of Round 1 against The Bank, at Sunnybank. At the time, the top 4 ladder was very tight and a win would see us jump Sunnybank into second spot. The boys put on their best performance of the season against a very spirited Sunnybank outfit and held our own try line for what seemed like an eternity to secure a great away win. The win really showcased what the boys were capable of and gave them confidence they could go all the way this year.

As what happens with most Colts teams we were heavily affected during the late stages of Round 2 to various Uni related events, holidays and festivals. As a result we lost a bit of momentum coming into the finals, managing some nail biting wins in what should have been easy games and also suffering a few heavy losses.

Not to be discouraged though the boys all fronted for week one of the finals ready to play. We were matched up against Sunnybank, who the previous week had inflicted a fairly heavy loss to our depleted team down at Yoku Rd. The finals were a different game though and the boys put on a great performance, leading at half-time only to have the game just slip away at the end. It was a disappointing end to the season, but still a great result for the boys to make the finals - a massive improvement.

I should also mention that for the finals we were only able to field 23 players, therefore the hardest decisions of the year had to be made leading up in which 15 players were left out. A massive thank you to all the blokes that not only played that day but also those who trained and played all year and had to miss out, you still came to support the guys and that’s what a team is all about.

Golden Gallopers

The GPS Golden Gallopers are a group of older gentlemen (loosely described) in excess of 35 years, who still believe we have the right to be considered for selection in the Wallabies as we were each the subject of conspiracies to deny us wearing the Gold jersey when in the prime of our rugby careers.

The GGs kicked off our season in February, with a group heading down to Redlands to participate in the Waitangi Day celebrations. As always, a great day was had by all, considering it was hot as Hades.

We then moved into our ‘season’ proper (we only play every two weeks or so) with our sister club at Albany Creek hosting a game against Redcliffe. In March we travelled to Toowoomba for the Highfields carnival. At the end of the day we were surprised to find that not only was a good time had by all, but they actually awarded trophies with the GGs walking away with the Team of the Carnival and Gibbo the player of the tournament. No one can be sure how many tries he scored on the day, but I am sure he will be able to give you the exact number and a description of each one. But that said all of us who have scored a try or two this year will expound our abilities and each one will have been scored over a distance of at least 50 metres running away from the opposition.

April saw the running of our Great Western Rumble with a good number of teams turning up for an afternoon of exhilarating high standard of football with the day being finished with a GGs verses Barbarians game. This is a yearly event for the GGs and it usually finishes with a bit of a thirst attached.

The season continued with a number of trips away to various venues around the south east corner. We deem anything which involves more that about 30 minutes driving from Yoku Rd as worthy of a bus trip. These are wonderful team building exercises and many thanks must go to our regular driver John (Otto) Mann.

Our season is set to continue into the year with teams going to a 10’s comp on the Gold Coast in October which will culminate in a visit to the Gold Coast 7’s on the Sunday. The GGs are always on the hunt for more players so if you believe you were robbed of playing for the Wallabies, are over 35 and play in the spirit of rugby, then you are for us (actually, if you are warm and vertical, you’re in!)

A special thanks to the GPS club and particularly Donna Meredith in the Canteen and General Manager Matt Turner

Finally, special mention to our sponsors. Thanks to Stewart Bensley from Hotel LA for providing our jerseys and allowing us to sell tickets in a meat tray on Reds game days. Also thanks to Billy from Billy’s Meats at Ashgrove for doing us fantastic deals on our game day BBQ and meat trays to sell throughout the year. Special thanks to our newest sponsor Bank of Queensland The Gap

For information on the Golden Gallopers we have a web site http://www.gpsgoldengallopers.com which also has a number of contact persons. Come on down and have a goodtime
