It gives me great pleasure to see this portion of our festival begin. Our winter months are just as busy behind the scenes as the daily activities witnessed by all of you here at our wonderful arena. This roundup marks the official beginning to circus performance season. This handbook is prepared by the Circus City Booster Club to familiarize you with the rules, regulations, and important information regarding the 2018 circus performance season. Brande Brehmer and Bryan Maggart are this year’s circus producers and are available to answer any questions or concerns regarding the information contained within this handbook. Our skilled trainers represent countless years of dedicated service to our organization. Beginning as performers themselves, and having the desire to continue to perpetuate what we now know as America’s Circus Spectacular. They will be working with the producers, the performers, the parents, and volunteers to continue to safely provide what is truly the greatest youth program in the State of Indiana. We look forward to your participation and cooperation in continuing the tradition of excellence established over the past 59 years. The Board of Directors of the Circus City Festival appreciates the efforts of each parent, performer and volunteer. As a family oriented organization, we are aware of all the time and sacrifices made by all for our circus program. We encourage all performers, parents, and volunteers to become members of the Circus City Festival Inc. and be active in some way with our circus festival. Membership in Circus City Festival starts at just $10 for an adult membership, and a family membership is only $20. Our circus is a wonderful youth program, but it cannot continue without your financial support and the hundreds of volunteers who make this and I’m proud to state it again, “America’s Circus Spectacular!” God Bless, and MAY ALL YOUR DAYS BE CIRCUS DAYS. Sincerely, Curt Powell President, Circus City Festival, Inc. 2 CIRCUS CITY BOOSTER CLUB Dear Circus Family, The Circus City Booster Club (CCBC) had a successful year in 2017, and is looking forward to a great year in 2018. We invite you to be an important part of the CCBC! Whether you are a parent, grandparent, or friend, your views and ideas are important to us. By attending the CCBC meetings, your opinions can be heard! The CCBC not only provides volunteers to support a multitude of performer-related activities, but it also raises funds for many projects that benefit each and every performer. CCBC meetings are usually held in the Circus Building Front Office. We meet monthly. We post our meetings on our facebook page( Peru Circus Booster Club). Some activities the CCBC sponsors in 2018 will include ordering circus performer t-shirts and circus parent shirts, YMCA Party, circus parade float, rummage sale, providing performers with refreshments during circus week, vending machine, concession stand for the first 4 weeks of practice and our fall fundraiser. Funds raised have also provided the Circus Spirit Scholarship. This $500 scholarship is awarded to a graduating senior who represents the ideals and goals of the CCBC. New ideas are always welcome, whether it is a new activity or a way to improve an old one. CCBC also tries to keep performers and their families informed of upcoming events by keeping our Facebook Page updated (Peru Circus Booster Club.) Also, we would love to have your email addresses and we can send information to you that way too! At Round-Up come to the Booster Club Table and give us your email address. We are really excited to get this year going strong. Please come and be a part of CCBC and help make 2018 a great one for your performers. The trainers and producers may at any time change these guidelines at their discretion. If you have a question or concern about these guidelines, please address them to the Head Trainer, Trainers, or Producers. CIRCUS OBJECTIVES: 1. To preserve the circus heritage for our community through the production of circus performances. 2. To entertain people with the highest quality circus performance possible. 3. To instill a feeling of accomplishment in each of us for a job well done by improving and learning new skills. 4. To give meaning to the concept of teamwork and family for each and every one of us. 5. To provide a sound, wholesome activity for the youth of Miami County. 6. To have fun. ELIGIBILITY: 1. All act performers must be: A. A Resident of Miami County as of March 15 B. Residing with their parents or guardian C. To be eligible to participate in circus, a child must be seven-years-old by June 1st and completing first grade. A birth certificate, may be required, as proof of age. 2. No person shall practice or perform without the following documents turned in and approved by the producer prior to first practice. A. Doctor’s physical form. The physical can be current school physical. Written proof of original copy must be turned in. B. Parental consent and release form C. Insurance information form 3. Performers are eligible to perform in the Peru Circus through age 21, determined by June 1st. 4. No married person, divorced person, or parent is eligible to perform. PERFORMANCE RULES: 1. All performers will be under the direct supervision of the producers and trainers. 2. Girls may perform in three acts. Girls may perform in three acts or two aerial and one ground acts. Boys may perform in four acts. Tumbling IS NOT considered an act. 3. All performers will be expected to be at all performances. If a performance must be missed, it must first be cleared through the circus producers. 4. Wardrobe personnel are in charge of all questions concerning wardrobe and makeup. Whether or not performers are allowed in the arena on bleachers during the show depend on their behavior and the size of the audience. The circus producers will make all decisions RIGGING: 1. Each performer and trainer will be responsible for his/her own rigging, its maintenance, care, and storage before and during show time. This includes: A. Periodic inspection B. Storage after practice (not on floor) C. Keeping it neat and orderly D. Putting away and straightening all cables and blocks E. Preparation and painting of equipment before show time 2. Misuse of equipment, including crash pads and nets, will not be tolerated. Offenders will be asked to leave or suspended from practice for that day. 3. During shows, the head rigger will have final say on equipment setup 4 PRACTICE RULES: 1. To practice for any act, each performer must meet eligibility requirements. 2. The trainer must excuse any missed practice in advance. Parents do not plan vacations or trips from the first of May through circus week. If you are unable to comply with this rule, your child may be cut from the show. ATTENDANCE IS NOT A SUGGESTION- IT IS REQUIRED! This circus is a team effort: therefore, absenteeism could possibly put performers in a dangerous situation. Also, if absenteeism inhibits the development of the act, it will have the same effect on the entire show. The safety of your child(ren) and other performers depends on excellence in attendance. If safety becomes a concern for any act that has performers who are not coming to practice, they will be cut from the act(s). If absences endanger the quality of the act, the performer will be replaced. Parents will be notified of absences that are disrupting an act’s advancement. Parents are encouraged to attend practices and to get to know other parents. 3. There will be no practice without the presence of a trainer. 4. Disrespect toward trainers will not be tolerated. 5. Performers are not allowed to practice acts they are not trying out for. 6. The trainer for each act is directly responsible for the performers practicing that act. 7. The trainer for each act will decide the proper dress apparel for practice. 8. Anyone working above a height of eight feet will be required to use safety devices designated by the trainer and approved by the equipment vice president. 9. The tack room is off limits to all performers at all times, unless given permission by equipment vice president 10. No equipment will leave the building without permission from equipment vice president 11. The office is off limits to performers unless given permission by the trainer or producer.

    LOCAL HISTORY WOODSTOCK & MCHENRY COUNTY Woodstock and the Circus by Kirk Dawdy Soon after its establishment in 1852 Woodstock became a consistent destination for circus shows. Several different outfits visited Woodstock over the years, including the Burr Robbins, Forepaugh, Cole, W.B. Reynolds, Gollmar Brothers, Ringling Brothers and Barnum circuses. The first documented circus in Woodstock was “Yankee” Robinson’s Quadruple Show in October of 1856. Robinson, a direct descendant of Pastor John Robinson, religious leader of the "Pilgrim Fathers" who journeyed to North America aboard the Mayflower, established his first travelling circus in 1854, two years prior to visiting Woodstock. An ardent abolitionist, Robinson included in his circuses minstrel shows based on Harriet Beecher Stowe's 1852 book Uncle Tom’s Cabin. In fact, Robinson was the very first to ever take a dramatized version of Uncle Tom’s Cabin on the road. In “Yankee” Robinson’s 1856 Woodstock visit, in addition to presenting a band of African-American minstrels performing in a production of Uncle Tom’s Cabin, he also exhibited live animals (including an elephant), a museum of curiosities, Dilly Fay the Shanghai Clown and Miss Paintero, a ‘Creole Lady’ who made a grand ascension on a 400 foot tightrope to the very top of the circus tent. Also advertised for “Yankee’s” visit was a grand parade around the Woodstock square. Circus parades were a crowd favorite and staple for all other circuses that visited Woodstock, weather permitting. Feeling his name sounded too foreign, especially during the anti-immigrant sentiments of the mid-1850s, Fayette Lodawick Robinson adopted the professional name “Yankee”.

This year marks the 40th Anniversary of a beloved New York City cultural gem that has delighted generations of families during its traditional holiday season at Lincoln Center and cities up and down the East Coast and as far west as Chicago. The 40th Anniversary celebrates the rebirth of a New York City and American cultural institution. After declaring bankruptcy in 2016, the Big Apple Circus seemed destined for extinction. Each of us in front and behind the curtain are honored to be part of this renaissance. The circus transcends all barriers bringing together children and adults of all ages, cultures and faith. For two hours, the world inside the Big Top transforms into a colorful kaleidoscope of wonder, amazement and laughter for all to of share. At the Big Apple Circus, we are committed to continuing the outreach programs so every child will have the opportunity to experience the wonder of the Circus. This year we will be expanding the number of shows adapted for children and young adults with Autism as well as those with hearing and visual challenges through our Circus of the Senses.     2019 CLASS DESCRIPTIONS SESSION A: August 5-11 PERIOD 1: 10:00 - 10:55 AM Acting the Song - Denise Blase, 13+ In this class, songs will be approached from the position of an actor with the logic, intention, and emotion behind the music being analyzed and truthfully expressed. Bring a song you are working on or Denise will help you choose one. All styles welcome. Either accompany yourself or Denise will on the piano. Students will learn how to break down a song and connect to the piece through both the lyrics and the music. This is the perfect class for singers/actors who want to dig deep into bringing more expression and dynamic interpretation to their singing. Opportunity to work on solos, duets and/or small group numbers. Caz Horns - Jessica Jones, 12+ Come join the house horn section, available to perform with many different bands in camp, including the jazz, rock and gospel ensembles! We'll learn the music for each ensemble and will also rehearse with the rock band (and other ensembles as possible). Then we'll perform! Some experience on your instrument and basic reading ability necessary. Some riffing, some improv, some reading - we're the ones who make the music punch!     Challenging Artists to Create Tomorrow's Circus Circadium is the only higher-education program for circus artists in the United States. We offer a full-time, three-year course that grants a Diploma of Circus Arts, recognized by the Pennsylvania Board of Education. We are committed to radically changing the future of circus, and performing arts as a whole, by bringing a multidisci- plinary and experiment-driven approach to creation and performance. As a 501(c)3 organization, the school relies on individual contributions and foundation support to cover costs that cannot be offset by student tuition. We keep our tuition rates low to encourage students from different backgrounds to attend, and to ensure that they will not launch their artistic careers bur- dened by student debt. Circus Arts are Thriving Worldwide, contemporary representations of circus are thriving and expanding – from Cirque du Soleil, to Pink’s performance at the Grammys, to the wide array of theatre and dance groups that incorporate elements of acrobatics, aerials, and clowning into their performances. Circus is no longer confined to the Big Top, as artists in every discipline discover its rich potential for physical expression. And yet, until now the United States lacked a dedicated facility for training contemporary circus artists. Students who wanted to train intensively in circus traveled to Canada, Europe, or Australia. They often stayed in those countries and established companies, meaning that now virtually all of the edgy, exciting, vibrant new circus companies are based overseas. There are a growing number of arts presenters in the U.S. who are clamoring for these kinds of shows – and the only way to get them has been to import them.

  • The Prescott Clowns
    The Prescott Clowns From Prescott Elementary School Oakland, California This energetic group of clowns is directed in an after school program by Aileen Moffitt, a second grade teacher, aka "Irma La Clown." These children receive training in circus skills from professionals, then dazzle everyone with their juggling, unicycle riding, and dancing. They give back to their community tenfold with workshops in classrooms and performances at many commu- nity events, nursing homes, and shelters -- besides a long list of school assemblies. "Wherever we perform -- from lavish banquet receptions to small neighborhood events -- it is our intention to dispel negative myths about the children of West Oakland. And we do!" This will be the 15th season for the Prescott Clown Troupe. Last year in addition to the Senior Clowns, they incorporated a Junior Clown Troupe - third graders of 8 or 9 years old.
