With a total land area of 29.8 square miles, Auburn is the center of the largest industrial complex in the Northwest. Like many American towns, Auburn grew through the 20th century, especially during the post-war era, bringing more businesses and a community college to the city. STORM WATER DISCHARGE REDUCTIONS All new development and redevelopment in Western Washington communities is required to use Low Impact Development (LID) techniques to manage their storm water and to reduce the impacts to our rivers and streams. Auburn encourages developers to reduce the amount of impervious area on their site, preserve natural areas and trees, and use pervious surfacing, bio-retention and rain gardens. These storm water management techniques enhance the aesthetic appeal of the development, provide environmental benefits, and can save money with lower SDCs and monthly storm utility charges.

Small Business Credit: Administered through the Dept. of Commerce, the CAP will target small businesses with credit needs in the range of $5,000 to $100,000 that have had difficulty accessing credit. The CAP will provide additional insurance by establishing a fund that lenders can access in the event of loan defaults. Small Business Financing: Administered through the Dept. of Commerce, Craft3 direct loans primarily target business financing needs of $1- 5M. Its collaboration efforts with other CFDIs and lenders in the state targets smaller loans through a shared risk structure. The W Fund: The W Fund is a $25M venture fund, available for investment into early-stage life science, biotech, medical device, alternative energy, and information technology companies emerging from University of Washington, Washington State University, and other research centers across Washington State. Industrial Revenue Bonds: Provide financing for land, building and equipment for new and expanding manufacturing facilities. These loans may be used to encourage relocations and expansions of companies that provide jobs and expand economic opportunities for residents and the community. Tax exempt bonds may be applied for by the manufacturer, processing company or wholesale distribution center.

BUSINESS LICENSING In the City of Auburn all businesses are required to maintain an active City business license. It is not uncommon for business owners or representatives to believe that they have obtained a license upon receipt of a Unified Business Identifier (UBI) from the Washington State Department of Revenue; however, the City also requires that each business obtain a local business license. DOWNTOWN FAÇADE IMPROVEMENT GRANT PROGRAM The Downtown Façade Improvement Grant Program seeks to preserve and enhance the charm of our downtown commercial area through strategic physical improvements to buildings. The City is awarding façade improvement grants to facilitate exterior building (façade) improvements for businesses within the designated Business Improvement Area (BIA). These property upgrades will improve the area’s overall visual appearance and as a result, attract business, visitors and residents. The primary goal of the grants will be to improve the appearance and “feel” of the City’s commercial, pedestrian- oriented core. The maximum grant award is $30,500 and the City will provide technical assistance from either staff or architects, designers or engineers to prepare for application.
