  • BASKETBALL Head Coach James Johnson 2013-14 VIRGINIA TECH BASKETBALL
2013-14 VIRGINIA TECH BASKETBALL Head Coach James Johnson 2013-14 VIRGINIA TECH BASKETBALL A MESSAGE TO TECH SUPPORTERS This is a very exciting time for the Virginia Tech men’s basketball team. We look forward to a season that will bring in new faces and new challenges. It should be a season of excitement and of improvement. The thing I have noticed about this group through the summer and the preseason is their willingness to work. I stated often last season that I never had to coach effort and this season, that same spirit has been evident since day one. This group of players shows up ready to do their best, regardless of whether it’s on the court, in the weight room or in the classroom. They are always ready to take a step forward. During the last year, we have made very substantial strides in shaping this program into a group that makes this University proud. We have become more involved in campus and community projects and have comported ourselves in a manner expected of Virginia Tech students and student-athletes. We strive to make this team YOUR team. It has meant so much to the team and me that you stop us on the street, in restaurants and out in public and greet us all so warmly. I believe this partnership has gotten off to a wonderful start and will only grow stronger. The season will begin on Nov. 9 and we will need each and every one of you in Cassell Coliseum, supporting this team.

To commemorate its proud heritage, Strictly Rhythm will release ‘The Definitive 30’ on 13 December - 30 classic tracks that define the label musically, artistically and culturally. To accompany this, there will be a 3-part 2 x 12” vinyl series being released from January, plus ten digitally unreleased recordings – including tracks from Todd Terry and Kenny Dope – on 13 December and 10 January. Strictly Rhythm’s extraordinary influence is shown by the many iconic artists who have released on the label, the internationally renowned selectors who regularly feature Strictly Rhythm tracks in their sets to a rapturous response, and the label’s presence in scores for the big and small screen. ‘The Definitive 30’ is a multi-faceted collection celebrating Strictly Rhythm’s legacy. Featuring early New York deep house: Logic’s ‘The Warning’, After Hours’ ‘Waterfalls’, and Kerri Chandler’s ‘Stompin’ Grounds’; the disco house sounds built on New York’s rich club heritage: Underground Solution’s ‘Luv Dancin’, The Untouchables’ ‘Lil Louie’s Anthem’; classic vocal house from Barbara Tucker, Aly-Us, and Black Magic; harder- edged rave classics in the shape of Todd Terry’s ‘Can You Feel It’ and Armand Van Helden’s ‘Witch Doktor’; and crossover hits from Reel II Real, Ultra Naté, Planet Soul, and Wamdue Project.

  • 1 "Disco Madness: Walter Gibbons and the Legacy of Turntablism and Remixology" Tim Lawrence Journal of Popular Music S
"Disco Madness: Walter Gibbons and the Legacy of Turntablism and Remixology" Tim Lawrence Journal of Popular Music Studies, 20, 3, 2008, 276-329 This story begins with a skinny white DJ mixing between the breaks of obscure Motown records with the ambidextrous intensity of an octopus on speed. It closes with the same man, debilitated and virtually blind, fumbling for gospel records as he spins up eternal hope in a fading dusk. In between Walter Gibbons worked as a cutting-edge discotheque DJ and remixer who, thanks to his pioneering reel-to-reel edits and contribution to the development of the twelve-inch single, revealed the immanent synergy that ran between the dance floor, the DJ booth and the recording studio. Gibbons started to mix between the breaks of disco and funk records around the same time DJ Kool Herc began to test the technique in the Bronx, and the disco spinner was as technically precise as Grandmaster Flash, even if the spinners directed their deft handiwork to differing ends. It would make sense, then, for Gibbons to be considered alongside these and other towering figures in the pantheon of turntablism, but he died in virtual anonymity in 1994, and his groundbreaking contribution to the intersecting arts of DJing and remixology has yet to register beyond disco aficionados.1 There is nothing mysterious about Gibbons's low profile. First, he operated in a culture that has been ridiculed and reviled since the "disco sucks" backlash peaked with the symbolic detonation of 40,000 disco records in the summer of 1979.

  • Sammy Strain Story, Part 3: the Imperials, 1961
Reprinted with permission from Echoes of the Past, Issue No. 103 (Spring 2013), pp. 17—24. The Sammy Strain Story—Part 3 The Imperials (1961—1963) by Charlie Horner With contributions from Pamela Horner After a more than three very successful years on George Goldner’s End label, Little Anthony & the Impe- rials broke up in 1961. Most of those three years had been spent under the mentorship of Richard Barrett; ever since 1957 when as the Chesters, Barrett had res- cued them from the clutches of Apollo Records. But as the smoke cleared from the payola hearings in 1961, it was clear that the music industry was changing. By 1961, Richard Barrett was an independent producer and was distancing himself from George Goldner and Morris Levy of End/Roulette Records. Without Barrett’s lead- ership, the Imperials came apart. [For the early story of Little Anthony & The Imperials, see Echoes of the Past, Issue #82, 2007] Imperials’ Little Anthony Gourdine went solo, remaining with Roulette Records. Nate Rogers was drafted into the service and Tracey Lord left to get married. Ernest Wright and Clarence Collins wanted to continue singing as the Imperials so they went to their mentor, Richard Barrett to help keep the group going. The Imperials, 1961. CARTER-AVITRIX MILDRED LOUISE (HEMMONS) CARTER Beloved Pioneer Tuskegee Aviatrix, Mildred Louise (Hemmons), Carter passed away peacefully at her home on 21 October 2011 after a lengthy illness. She filed her final Flight Plan on a perfect Tuskegee flying day with little wind and a cloudless blue sky; Mildred was 90 years old. Aviator, wife, great-grandmother, a leading citizen of Tuskegee; Mil- dred is perhaps best known as a graduate of the Tuskegee Civilian Pilot Program (CPT), authorized by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. This was the precursor of the Tuskegee Airmen. As a 19 year-old Tuskegee Institute (University) graduate with a BA in Business, Mildred was the first hire of the Army Air Corps in setting up the Tuskegee Army Air Field (TAAF). She served as Chief Clerk in the Quartermaster Corps at TAAF and created the documents that equipped the new base. Mildred also held a Parachute Packer Rating and was an excellent Secretary/Typist. She was a Documented Original Tuskegee Airman (DOTA), and a member of the Bessie Coleman Foundation; an organization of women aviators... Issue 133 MARCH 29TH, 2021 Copper has a new look! So does the rest of the PS Audio website, the result of countless hours of hard work. There's more functionality and easier access to articles, and additional developments will come. There will be some temporary glitches and some tweaks required – like high-end audio systems, magazines sometimes need tweaking too – but overall, we're excited to provide a better and more enjoyable reading experience. I now hand over the column to our esteemed Larry Schenbeck: Dear Copper Colleagues and Readers, Frank has graciously asked if I’d like to share a word or two about my intention to stop writing Too Much Tchaikovsky. So: thanks to everyone who read and enjoyed it – I wrote it for you. If you added comments occasionally, you made my day. I also wrote the column so I could keep learning, especially about emerging creatives and performers in classical music. Getting the chance to stumble upon something new and nourishing had sustained me in the academic world – it certainly wasn’t the money! – and I was grateful to continue that in Copper. So why stop? Because, as they say, there is a season. It has become considerably harder for me to stumble upon truly fresh sounds and then write freshly thereon. Here I am tempted to quote Douglas Adams or Satchel Paige, who both knew how to deliver an exit line. But I’ll just say (since Frank has promised to leave the light on), goodbye for now. The door is open, Larry, and we can’t thank you enough for your wonderful contributions.
