  • BASKETBALL Head Coach James Johnson 2013-14 VIRGINIA TECH BASKETBALL
2013-14 VIRGINIA TECH BASKETBALL Head Coach James Johnson 2013-14 VIRGINIA TECH BASKETBALL A MESSAGE TO TECH SUPPORTERS This is a very exciting time for the Virginia Tech men’s basketball team. We look forward to a season that will bring in new faces and new challenges. It should be a season of excitement and of improvement. The thing I have noticed about this group through the summer and the preseason is their willingness to work. I stated often last season that I never had to coach effort and this season, that same spirit has been evident since day one. This group of players shows up ready to do their best, regardless of whether it’s on the court, in the weight room or in the classroom. They are always ready to take a step forward. During the last year, we have made very substantial strides in shaping this program into a group that makes this University proud. We have become more involved in campus and community projects and have comported ourselves in a manner expected of Virginia Tech students and student-athletes. We strive to make this team YOUR team. It has meant so much to the team and me that you stop us on the street, in restaurants and out in public and greet us all so warmly. I believe this partnership has gotten off to a wonderful start and will only grow stronger. The season will begin on Nov. 9 and we will need each and every one of you in Cassell Coliseum, supporting this team.

Reprinted with permission from Echoes of the Past, Issue No. 103 (Spring 2013), pp. 17—24. The Sammy Strain Story—Part 3 The Imperials (1961—1963) by Charlie Horner With contributions from Pamela Horner After a more than three very successful years on George Goldner’s End label, Little Anthony & the Impe- rials broke up in 1961. Most of those three years had been spent under the mentorship of Richard Barrett; ever since 1957 when as the Chesters, Barrett had res- cued them from the clutches of Apollo Records. But as the smoke cleared from the payola hearings in 1961, it was clear that the music industry was changing. By 1961, Richard Barrett was an independent producer and was distancing himself from George Goldner and Morris Levy of End/Roulette Records. Without Barrett’s lead- ership, the Imperials came apart. [For the early story of Little Anthony & The Imperials, see Echoes of the Past, Issue #82, 2007] Imperials’ Little Anthony Gourdine went solo, remaining with Roulette Records. Nate Rogers was drafted into the service and Tracey Lord left to get married. Ernest Wright and Clarence Collins wanted to continue singing as the Imperials so they went to their mentor, Richard Barrett to help keep the group going. The Imperials, 1961. Left to right: Ernest Wright, Meanwhile, Sammy Strain was busy singing Sammy Strain, Clarence Collins, George Kerr. with the Impacts [see Steven Kahn’s story, this issue of (Photo courtesy of Sammy Strain) Echoes of the Past]. CARTER-AVITRIX MILDRED LOUISE (HEMMONS) CARTER Beloved Pioneer Tuskegee Aviatrix, Mildred Louise (Hemmons), Carter passed away peacefully at her home on 21 October 2011 after a lengthy illness. She filed her final Flight Plan on a perfect Tuskegee flying day with little wind and a cloudless blue sky; Mildred was 90 years old. Aviator, wife, great-grandmother, a leading citizen of Tuskegee; Mil- dred is perhaps best known as a graduate of the Tuskegee Civilian Pilot Program (CPT), authorized by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. This was the precursor of the Tuskegee Airmen. As a 19 year-old Tuskegee Institute (University) graduate with a BA in Business, Mildred was the first hire of the Army Air Corps in setting up the Tuskegee Army Air Field (TAAF). She served as Chief Clerk in the Quartermaster Corps at TAAF and created the documents that equipped the new base. Mildred also held a Parachute Packer Rating and was an excellent Secretary/Typist. She was a Documented Original Tuskegee Airman (DOTA), and a member of the Bessie Coleman Foundation; an organization of women aviators... During the 1941 historic 40 minute flight of First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt with C. Alfred “Chief” Anderson, head of the Tuskegee Civilian Pilot Training Program, Chief advised that the Negro students were indeed doing well in their training regimen.
