It’s always tough to replace someone who has been a vital and vibrant part of something. Do you think it was easy for George Lazenby or Roger Moore to step into the role of 007 after Sean Connery moved on? No, I bet they were shaking in their Armani suits. When for- mer branch manager Ellen Mester moved to the Madera County library to become the Man- aging Librarian and I was tapped to take her place I was filled with trepidation. Fortunately, the community has been gracious and welcoming to me and I am having a great time meet- ing all of the challenges that come with being a branch manager. There’s so much to do I haven’t had time to be too freaked out. That said, I have a lot to report to you. Here goes. Big Changes Thanks to those of you who filled out our “HowAre We Doing?” questionnaire. We got great responses and it sounds like the major change patrons would like to see most are dif- ferent hours. We’re hoping to make it happen. Of course, the Board of Supervisors still have to approve the changes (and you know the wheels of bureaucracy grind ever so slowly) but we’re hoping to have new hours in place by November. Included are some hours on Satur- day for those of you who are too busy to make it in during the weekday. Good things hap- pen when the people speak!Another great change is that you can now pay fees and fines with a credit card through our Smart Pay system. Rolled out last month, Smart Pay allows you to use your home computer (or the computers at any of our branches) to pay your overdue fees or late fines with a credit or debit card. And don’t be frightened – from what I’ve seen the system is wonderfully user-friendly and convenient. A Great Time A big thank you to all who participated in the Cool Jazz and Wine event at Birdstone Winery on Sept. 17. The music was great, the food and wine were outstanding and all of the proceeds benefited the Ranchos library. It was sort of a win-win situation for everyone – ex- cept me: wine tends to make my head feel like it might explode. Still, the event was just in- timate enough that everyone could enjoy each other’s company in a relaxed, jazzy atmosphere. Next time, we’re considering booking Metallica as the musical choice. Only 9/11 kidding of course. Storytime Back This Month A lot of you have asked, so we’re happy to announce Preschool Storytime will be back each Thursday beginning in October. We would’ve had the program up and running sooner, but we had a little fall cleaning we had to take care of first. Diane Maxfield, our storytime WIN FREE PROPANE! leader extraordinaire, is ready to wow kiddies and parents alike with fun stories, games and activities. If you haven’t been to a storytime yet, they really are terrific. We’re also hoping to invite other guests to the library, specially scheduled around school holidays so we can have WIN 250 GALLONS OF PROPANE big turn-outs. And finally … Although the questionnaire shed light on what our patrons want, we still need more feedback from you. What other programs would you like to see at our li- brary? What changes would you make if you were in charge? What books and authors would you like to see on our shelves? Remember, the Ranchos Library is your library. We appreciate helpful comments and suggestions and look forward to serving you. So stop by soon. And don’t forget your library card — don’t leave home without it.
