Cartographic Styles and Discourse MAGIS Brugge: Visualizing Marcus Gerards’ 16th-century Map through its 21st-century Digitization Elien Vernackt * MAGIS Brugge Project Abstract Marcus Gerards delivered his town plan of Bruges in 1562 and managed to capture the imagination of viewers ever since. The 21st-century digitization project MAGIS Brugge, supported by the Flemish government, has helped to treat this map as a primary source worthy of examination itself, rather than as a decorative illustration for local history. A historical database was built on top of it, with the analytic method called ‘Digital Thematic Deconstruction.’ This enabled scholars to study formally overlooked details, like how it was that Gerards was able to balance the requirements of his patrons against his own needs as an artist and humanist Abstract Marcus Gerards slaagde erin om tot de verbeelding te blijven spreken sinds hij zijn plan van Brugge afwerkte in 1562. -

Charlier Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) Belgium www.cerf-jcr.org Florida Atlantic University (FAU) Boca Raton, FL, U.S.A. ABSTRACT CHARLIER, R.H. 2011. The Zwin: From Golden Inlet to Nature Reserve. Journal of Coastal Research, 27(4), 746–756. West Palm Beach (Florida), ISSN 0749-0208. Artists of the XVII Provinces contributed considerably to cartography. For instance, Peter Pourbus, a Bruges painter, is the author of maps of Zeeland and of the Zwin Region, an area that Emperor Charles V (1500–1577) was anxious to protect against a seaborne enemy invasion. The coastal areas of Flanders and Zeeland were repeatedly covered, in prehistoric, protohistoric, and historic times, by the North Sea waters. The storm of the 13th century broke through continental barriers, opening a channel whose draught allowed ships to sail up to such towns as Sluis, Damme, and Hoek, sites that became, for several centuries, outer harbors of Bruges. The trade thus generated is at the origin of Bruges’s wealth, leading to the Zwin inlet being nicknamed the ‘‘Golden Inlet.’’ Sadly, silting set in and occlusion of the inlet progressed inexorably. -
Belgian Coastal Urban Environments: Reading Human Mobility Processes in a Spatial Framework
CHAPTER III. Belgian Coastal Urban Environments: Reading Human Mobility Processes in a Spatial Framework Xuan Quynh LE Ahmed Z. KHAN Eric CORIJN X. Q uynh Le, A. Z. Khan, E. Corijn,Belgian Coastal Urban Environments 1. Introduction In this chapter, urbanization and mobility aspects of the two Belgian case studies are reviewed and analysed. They are the Brugge Study Area (SA) with 9 communes (4 in the Ring and 5 in the Core) and Oostende SA with 5 communes (2 in the Ring and 3 in the Core). The SAs are defined using criteria describing human mobility (migration and commuting) and urbanisation processes (describing the spatial extension of urban features and other related demographical characteristics). The two study areas lie next to each other in the coastal front of Belgium, occupying around a half of the total Belgian coastline. According to an official delineation of the Belgian Coastal Zone, most of these two study areas lie within the coastal zone. The main objective of this review is to identify urbanisation and human mobility patterns in the case studies based on their development trends in the last decade. In both case studies, it is presumed that urbanisation and human mobility have evolved hand in hand and together play a crucial role in shaping the transformations happening in their respective urban centres. By analysing functional urban regions through urbanisation processes and human mobility, it is hoped that different issues relating to those processes can be discerned. The intention behind discerning these issues is to facilitate the identification of conflicts that will be the focus of further work in the framework of the SECOA project. -
