Greetings from the President

Dear Friends,

Welcome back to the members of the Class of 1966, who celebrate a half-century as TU alumni and join our Gold Medallion Society. Our annual gathering has become a favorite Homecoming tradition.

As we welcome each successive 50-year class, we recall the major events of that graduating year. Our journey through the 1960s has been a fascinating look back. You came of age in some truly dynamic times, shaped by social unrest, international rivalry and technological innovation.

Today, our mission remains focused on preparing students to “welcome the responsibility of citizenship, service and leadership in a changing world.” Although the technical details of the disciplines we teach have changed dramatically over the years, the TU education remains rooted in the fundamentals of critical thinking, responsible fact-finding and a broad grounding in the timeless perspectives of the liberal arts. As generations of TU alumni have proven, those fundamentals never go out of style, and they continue to form the foundation of distinguished careers and purposeful lives.

All best,

Steadman Upham President

On election years, I do spend time and money supporting Democratic candidates, an outgrowth I suppose of my Young Democrat days at TU. Like an old Fire Horse at the 19th Century Fire Houses, I say that I am semi-retired but have my ears always perked up for the fire alarm, and the urgent call to go to some intensely demanding new job – and then, I am constantly plotting how to cook up a new project. When in Tulsa, I delight in how little Will Rogers and Cascia Hall have changed, but am a little alarmed how big and sprawling TU has become. With my four years undergrad and five years grad school days on campus, I guess I was quite content “back then” when a brisk walk would get you anywhere.
