Luan Gallery staff strive to support the meaningful delivery of arts education within the secondary school curriculum. Teachers are encouraged to bring student groups to Luan Gallery to view the exhibitions in the company of gallery staff. Luan Gallery staff present exhibition tours and education packages which introduce a variety of tools to foster students’ comfort with art and the gallery environment. National Gallery of Ireland Annual Report 2015 National Gallery of Ireland The National Gallery of Ireland was founded by an Act of Parliament in 1854 and opened to the public in 1864. It is home to over 16,300 works of art, complemented by the National Portrait Collection, as well as research facilities dedicated to the study of Irish art. The collection ranges in date from the fourteenth century to the present day comprising paintings, sculpture and works on paper spanning the history of Western European art, from Renaissance masters Fra Angelico and Paolo Uccello to Claude Monet and Pablo Picasso. The Gallery’s most prominent holdings relate to the Irish collection with works by Nathaniel Hone, Thomas Roberts, Daniel Maclise, Roderic O’Conor, William Orpen, John Lavery, Louis le Brocquy, among others. Particularly popular are the works of William Leech, Paul Henry and Jack B. Yeats, whose extensive archive is housed at the Gallery. More recently the Gallery has significantly enhanced its research facilities with the opening of the Sir Denis Mahon Reading Room. The permanent collection is free to the public and the Gallery welcomes large numbers of Irish and overseas visitors each year. Four wings of the Gallery, built between 1864 and 2002, accommodate a growing collection. As part of the Master Development Plan (MDP) a major refurbishment project of the Dargan and Milltown wings on Merrion Square is currently underway and scheduled to reopen with a new presentation of the collection in 2017. An additional wing to the Gallery is planned for the coming years. This final phase will conclude a decade-long process of essential improvement and modernisation of the National Gallery of Ireland for staff and visitors alike.

LUAN GALLERY Jealous Wall
LUAN GALLERY Jealous Wall 1 September 2017 – 14 October 2017 Introduction Luan Gallery is delighted to present Jealous Wall. This Autumn 2017 exhibition is presented in collaboration with London based curator and artist, Séamus McCormack. Jealous Wall features work by emerging Irish and UK artists; Miranda Blennerhassett, Niall de Buitléar, Janine Davidson, Adam Gibney and David Eager Maher. Séamus, who is originally from Mullingar is currently working as Programme Manager of New Contemporaries London, drew his inspiration for the exhibition title from an architectural construction, ‘The Jealous Wall’. The folly was built in c.1760 and is located at Belvedere House, Gardens and Park, Mullingar in County Westmeath. McCormack demonstrates by ‘using concepts, ideas and themes that the structure, its history and form suggest, the exhibition brings together artists’ practices that explore the baroque, illusion, memory, site and architectonics’ through a range of works in various media. Apparently, Ireland has more follies to the acre than anywhere else in the world. Perhaps this is true, perhaps not but we certainly have many fine examples of these ornamental constructions. Built for no practical purpose many of these structures are towers or mock Gothic-ruins built in large gardens or parks. The wall at Belvedere is a spectacular folly believed to be the largest purposely built ruin of its kind in Ireland. It was designed as a sham-ruin of an Abbey as a result of a quarrel between two brothers; Robert and George Rochfort and it now stands as an opulent testament to the hatred, jealousy and malicious feelings harboured between the two neighbouring brothers.

conor walton Asymmetrical warfare LUAN GALLERY Front Image:The Barbarians at the Gates, oil on linen, 50 × 60cm, 2017 LUAN GALLERY Conor Walton Asymmetrical Warfare 17 August 2019 – 13 October 2019 Introduction Luan Gallery is delighted to present its autumn 2019 exhibition Asymmetrical Warfare, a solo exhibition by the acclaimed Irish Artist Conor Walton. The exhibi- tion focuses on a number of new unseen paintings supplemented by existing works created in recent years. Time-lapse videos demonstrating Walton’s process also form part of the exhibition. Walton, whilst still in his 40s, has achieved remarkable success at this stage of his career. He is widely regarded as one of the foremost Irish artists using tradi- tional artistic techniques in his practice. Walton is also well known for his portrai- ture work but doesn’t see himself as a portraitist, rather as a painter whose work includes portraits. He has won numerous awards including; ModPortrait 2017, Arc Salon 2014/15, Portrait Ireland 2005, The Taylor Prize 1993 and was shortlisted for both the BP Portrait Award in 2005, and the Golden Fleece Award in 2011. He has had fifteen solo exhibitions across Europe and America and has featured in many -mu seum exhibitions including; the National Portrait Gallery (London), MEAM (Bar- celona), The National Gallery of Ireland and the Scottish National Portrait Gallery (Edinburgh). Conor`s commissioned portraits can be found in many public and private collections in Ireland and his work has been featured on book covers and postage stamps in Ireland and abroad. He has lectured extensively, hosts an annual ‘Conor Walton Summer School’ scholarship programme drawing students from four continents and has been lauded by esteemed critics, art historians and artists such as the American critic and art historian, Donald Kuspit.
