installing the sling on a vault about to be loaded into a railroad car.

The shipment consisted of a total of approximately 5000 curies of radio- active materials, sealed in 240 reinforced concrete containers, oF “vaults.” Each vault weighs about ten tons. The concrete sides of each vault are from 6 to 17 inches thick, for shielding purposes. Each car was marked with con- ventional radiation warning signs. The vaults were blocked securely into the 34 gondola-type cars by means of wooden dunnage. The entire shipment re- ceived a one hour check every time the train made a stop. The train also included a courier car for the team of five accompanying Brookhaven health physicists, who were responsible for the integrity of the MEMORIAL DAY HOLIDiY _ shipment during the entire journey. This team was under the leadership of THURSDAY, MAY 30 Smith G. Pearsall; the other members were John L. Batdorf, Jr., Arthur F. (continued on the following poge)
