A meeting was held in Manhattan on October 25, 1895, at which the Baltusrol Golf Club was organized. In 1897, Baltus- rol became one of the charter members of the MGA. Baltusrol takes its name from the 200-foot moun- tain that forms the club’s northwest boundary. The mountain is named after a wealthy farmer called Baltus Roll, who once lived near where the club- house is now located. The original Baltusrol clubhouse was a con- The original clubhouse verted farmhouse, and on the night of March 27, 1909, it burned to the ground. Baltusrol’s majestic new English Manor-style clubhouse, built at a cost of $100,000, was ready the next spring, and continues to provide a comfortable second home for the club’s 850 members. Baltusrol’s original nine-hole course was expanded to 18 holes prior to the 1898 season, then revised in 1905 to form what the club refers to as the “Old Course.” In 1903, the USGA brought the U.S. Open to Bal- tusrol. The championship was captured by Willie Anderson and was the first of seven USGA championships hosted by Baltusrol.

FROM THE PRESIDENT DEAR COMPETITORS, Welcome to the 118th playing of the SCGA Amateur Champion- ship. Surprisingly, the Coachella Valley, home to 120 golf courses, has never hosted the SCGA Amateur. Yes, it’s appropriate and long overdue. With fairways lined by large Eucalyptus trees and elevated greens protected by strategic bunkers, the Dinah Shore Tournament Course has provided a fair, but challenging test for many championships. Previous winners include Johnny Dawson (1942, 44 & 45), local standout Scott McGihon (2000, 2005 and 2006), Alan Geiberger (1956 and 1959), Beau Hossler (2013, 2014), Tiger Woods, and Patrick Cantlay. Last July at Barona Creek, Rico Hoey scored a record 19 under par 269 besting Dan Erickson (273), Clay Feagler (274), P. J. Samiere (275) and Hide Yoshihara (276). After competing in our championship, many participants have subse-quently enjoyed successful careers on the PGA Tour. My sincere congratulations on qualifying to compete on one of the Coachella Valley’s finest courses. Our Desmond Muirhead designed course opened in 1971 and in 1976 hosted the World Cup, won by Seve Ballesteros and Manuel Pinero. Mission Hills has hosted the AJGA Desert Junior annually since 1982. The first stage of LPGA qualifying is held here in the early fall. And 2017 marked the 35th playing of what is now the ANA Inspiration, the longest running LPGA major. Gorgeous views of the San Jacinto and San Gorgonio mountains and subtle slopes toward the Salton Sea add to the mystique. And there’s more for nature lovers: the sightings and sounds of red tailed hawks, vermillion flycatchers, Costas hummingbirds, and the occasional coyote.

This will be just the fourth time that the SCGA’s premiere championship — the nation’s second-oldest, contin- uously contested amateur golf championship — will be played at a public course. Tijeras Creek GC is the home course of SCGA President Bill Cunerty, who is also the golf coach at Saddleback College in nearby Mission Viejo. It’s also just the fourth time that the tournament has been held in Orange County; the last one was in 1995 when Charlie Wi won at Santa Ana CC. The 72-hole stroke play event will include 36 holes on Friday, followed by a cut to the low 42 scorers and ties. That group will play 18 holes each on Saturday and Sunday. Tee times begin at 7:30 a.m. each day. Gallery is welcome at no charge.
