Following a solid 1-over 72 on the Upper Course in his first round, Rose came roaring back with a 1-under 71 on the Lower Course, the lowest second round score of the day on the daunt- ing 7,016 yard major championship course, to finish with a 36-hole total of even par 143. Defending champion Jared Mactas of Woodcliff Lake, N.J. birdied the 17th hole to pull within a shot of Rose’s lead, but his 6-foot birdie putt on 18 to force a playoff lipped out, leaving him as the runner-up at 144. A meeting was held in Manhattan on October 25, 1895, at which the Baltusrol Golf Club was organized. In 1897, Baltus- rol became one of the charter members of the MGA. Baltusrol takes its name from the 200-foot moun- tain that forms the club’s northwest boundary. The mountain is named after a wealthy farmer called Baltus Roll, who once lived near where the club- house is now located. The original Baltusrol clubhouse was a con- The original clubhouse verted farmhouse, and on the night of March 27, 1909, it burned to the ground. Baltusrol’s majestic new English Manor-style clubhouse, built at a cost of $100,000, was ready the next spring, and continues to provide a comfortable second home for the club’s 850 members. Baltusrol’s original nine-hole course was expanded to 18 holes prior to the 1898 season, then revised in 1905 to form what the club refers to as the “Old Course.” In 1903, the USGA brought the U.S. Open to Bal- tusrol. The championship was captured by Willie Anderson and was the first of seven USGA championships hosted by Baltusrol.
