In the Trump Era, a Familyʼs Fight With Google and Facebook Over Disinformation The man behind “Willie Horton” and Citizens United built a potent online disinformation mill with his son. Then Big Tech changed the rules. By Nicholas Confessore and Justin Bank Published Aug. 21, 2019 Updated Aug. 22, 2019 Each day, in an office outside Phoenix, a team of young writers and editors curates reality. In the America presented on their news and opinion website, WesternJournal.com, tradition-minded patriots face ceaseless assault by anti-Christian bigots, diseased migrants and race hustlers concocting hate crimes. Danger and outrages loom. A Mexican politician threatens the “takeover” of several American states. Police officers are kicked out of an Arizona Starbucks. Kamala Harris, the Democratic presidential candidate, proposes a “$100 billion handout” for black families. The Western Journal is not quite a household name. Until recently, some of its most prolific writers used pseudonyms. Though it publishes scores of stories each week about national politics, the company has no Washington bureau, or any other bureaus. Indeed, it rarely dispatches reporters into the world to gather news firsthand. In the parallel universe of Facebook, though, The Western Journal has been among the most popular and influential publications in America, shaping the political beliefs of more than 36 million deeply loyal readers and followers. In the three years ending in March, according to a New York Times analysis, Western Journal’s Facebook posts earned three-quarters of a billion shares, likes and comments, almost as many as the combined tally of 10 leading American news organizations that together employ thousands of reporters and editors.

Let Us Infotain You: Politics in the New Media Age Abstract Political communications scholars, members of the press, and political elites have traditionally distinguished between entertainment and non-entertainment media. It is in public affairs media in general and news media in particular that politics is assumed to reside, and it is to this part of the media that the public is assumed to turn when engaging the political world. Politics, in this view, is a distinct and self- contained part of public life, and citizen is one role among many played by individuals.

  • Conservative Action Project (CAP) Was Founded in 2008 by Many Conservative Leaders with Former Attorney General Edwin Meese III Serving As the Founding Chairman
MEMO FOR THE MOVEMENT Conservatives Oppose H.R. 1, the Ultimate Fantasy of the Left January 28, 2019 Washington, DC Conservatives are united in opposing H.R. 1, the attempt by House Democrats to fundamentally undermine the American electoral system. While they cloak the bill in terms of “restoring democracy” and “preventing corruption,” the legislation has one goal: to protect incumbents, at the expense of the First Amendment, federalism, and individual voter integrity. H.R. 1 undermines the First Amendment. H.R. 1 undoes key Supreme Court cases that protect elections as fundamental to free speech. It would allow the Federal Election Commission to track and catalogue more of what Americans are saying, register even very small political donations, and make public those who donate to different charitable and nonprofit organizations. The legislation will subject private citizens to intimidation and harassment for their private and political beliefs, far broader than what was done in the IRS targeting scandal in 2013. H.R. 1 yanks election authority away from the states. H.R. 1 reasserts the ability of the federal government to micromanage state elections through a process known as “preclearance.” Preclearance, which was previously overturned by the Supreme Court, requires states to get permission from the federal government for changes as small as modifying the hours of an election office, or moving a voting location from a school gym to the library. Critically, none of these practices would undo any fraud or corruption. Rather, these same practices result in incorrect registrations and inaccurate voter data, while failing to address actual corrupt practices like ballot harvesting.

Norton, Esquire f S^S^^ General Counsel co .f :^Sr'rn Federal Election Commission TJ nj'.i?coP< 999 E Street, NW ^ g§q5 Washington, DC 20463 ^ > 5 CO ~~ Re: Advisory Opinion Request Dear Mr. Norton: This advisory opinion request is being submitted on behalf of Citizens United pursuant to the Federal Election Campaign Act of 1971, as amended ("FECA"). In particular, Citizens United desires an advisory opinion on the following three issues: (1) whether paid broadcast advertisements for a book titled The Many Faces of John Kerry. which was authored by the organization's president, David N. Bossie, would qualify as "electioneering communications" if the ads are broadcast during either the 30 day period preceding the Democratic National Convention or the 60 day period preceding the presidential election on November 2,2004; (2) whether the broadcast of a documentary film on John Kerry and John Edwards and/or broadcast advertisements for the film would qualify as "electioneering communications" if the film or ads are broadcast during the 60 day period preceding the presidential election on November 2,2004; and (3) if the film or ads at issue in this advisory opinion request qualify as electioneering communications, whether the film or ads for the film or book fall within FECA's press exemption.1 1 Citizens United is aware that on June 25, 2004 the Commission issued Advisory Opinion 2004- 15, which concluded that broadcast advertising of a documentary the included references to President George W. Bush would qualify as an electioneering communication if the ads are aired during the 60 days preceding the general election or 30 days preceding any primary or preference election for the office sought by the candidate.

How did we get here? The Disinformation Age assembles a remarkable group of historians, political scientists, and communication scholars to examine the historical and political origins of the post-fact information era, focusing on the United States but with lessons for other democracies. Bennett and Livingston frame the book by examining decades-long efforts by political and business interests to undermine authoritative institutions, including parties, elections, public agencies, science, independent journalism, and civil society groups. The other distinguished scholars explore the historical origins and workings of disinformation, along with policy challenges and the role of the legacy press in improving public communication. • Fake News & Film: How Alternative Facts Influence the National Discourse
297 GELTZER (DO NOT DELETE) 5/5/2018 1:36 PM FAKE NEWS & FILM: HOW ALTERNATIVE FACTS INFLUENCE THE NATIONAL DISCOURSE Jeremy Geltzer I. INTRODUCTION Aliens invade New Jersey! Hitler loves the Jews! 9/11 was a false flag operation! Ludicrous, preposterous, and ridiculous statements all, and yet each of these reports was at one point passed off and positioned as a truthful account. Fake news is not a new political tool. In 1782, Benjamin Franklin published a claim that George III “furnished the Savages with hatchets and scalping knives, and engages them to fall upon our defen[s]eless farmers, and murder them with their wives and children.”1 While there is little evidence the King of England actually commissioned indigenous Americans to murder colonial families, Franklin’s publications riled a country still engaged in revolution. In contemporary America, the trope “fake news” gained greater visibility after the 2016 Presidential Election. Political factions weaponized the rallying cry of “fake news” as a method of branding reports considered critical and events deemed unfavorable. By simply labeling credible information “fake news,” authenticity could be discredited. While this phrase cast a pall on objective journalism, a door was simultaneously Jeremy Geltzer is an attorney and author of multiple books, including DIRTY WORDS & FILTHY PICTURES: FILM AND THE FIRST AMENDMENT (The University of Texas Press, 2016) and FILM CENSORSHIP IN AMERICA: A STATE-BY-STATE HISTORY (McFarland, 2017).
