Transactions In previous years teams were allowed to claim a player off waivers during the season for a 5K fee. Since we no longer use cash, I’ve decided to allow teams to claim players off waivers for the purpose of covering usage for the season. Should these claims put a team over 30 players, a player would have to be dropped from the roster.

51. Minneapolis claims Leo Cardenas off waivers. 52. South Shore claims Tom Ragland off waivers, releases Ed Kirkpatrick. 53. Ridgewood acquires Cuyler McCorkindale , weighing in at 8 lbs., 4 oz., 20 inches long. Congratulations to Stu and Sue!

Managerial Changes Both Chuck Bennett and Scott Parks have resigned. Chuck’s lost interest and doesn’t feel right holding up the rest of the league. His free time has decreased and his poker time has increased. Scott is heavily into his soccer league, the web site for that league and formula 1 racing. He doesn’t have the time or interest needed to devote to APBA Baseball. The new manager of the Minneapolis team is Bob Moore. His address, phone number and e-mail address is included in the new manager roster. Bob is a long time APBA player and a friend of Stu and Frank from the formation days of the TCBA. Regarding the Montgomery team, I am checking with people on the waiting list to find someone to take the Ants. I will be playing Montgomery’s games for January. If you have instructions send them to me.

Rule Proposals Now is the time to submit proposals for change in the NCABL. Proposals will be accepted during the month of January, presented in the January newsletter and voted upon in late February. A league message board is being established for the exchange of ideas concerning these proposals (as well as other areas of interest). The BIG item that we need to consider for next year is using the AIM format. Many of you have AIM experience and privately have expressed an interest in moving to this format. Now is the time to decide. For those who do not have AIM experience, the more significant changes that would occur are:

• We would switch from a monthly to a weekly schedule. At first thought this seems like it could be a major time problem, but (for me) after getting into a routine it is very easy to keep up. • Tracking player usage would be eliminated except for stolen base attempts. • Micromanagers would be used for all road games. • Weekly interaction via the message board would greatly enhance the enjoyment we get from the league. The pennant races would unfold a week at a time, and reports on the HR title chase (can Schmidt earn his first in the NL?) and in the AL Allen, Wynn, Jackson and Perez would be of interest.

Some answers to questions that might be asked: Q: What if I’m on vacation or busy and unable to play my games for the week? Wouldn’t that hold up the rest of the league? A: What happens when someone cannot play their games is that two micromanagers play the series. The league would not be held up.

Q: Will someone be able to help me if I become overwhelmed with all of the new AIM concepts? A: Yes, there are several of us who have AIM experience. Tom Meade’s 1930s league uses AIM and Stu McCorkindale addressed the AIM issue in an article for the APBA Online website. Others have played in leagues or are doing replays so there is much help to be offered.

Q: We use 30 man rosters. From experience in other AIM leagues that may not be enough to get through a season. Any chance that roster size will expand? A: Good chance that will become a necessity. If AIM passes we will be using the .600 slug + obp to determine eligibility for the innocuous 930 Play Rating. If you’ve never played AIM that means the guy should be allowed to play in about 93% of the games. Grade D pitchers (1-5) will also have extended usage as they do now.

I’m sure there will be others. Please don’t be shy about asking or offering comments from your own AIM experience.
