February Highlights… Feb 3 - Cooperstown and Ridgewood rapped out 37 hits as the Cardinals beat the Reds 13-10. In the game Gene Tenace hit 3 HR for the Reds. Feb 3 - Brooklyn Center rookie Steve Rogers tossed a 1 hitter against Berwyn, allowing only a Don Money double. Rogers won the game 3-0. Feb 4 - Nolan Ryan struck out 15 Camels but lost the game in 10 innings 3-2. Feb 4 - Jeff Burroughs hit a grand slam in the first inning off David Clyde, then later hit a 2 run HR in Minneapolis’ 8-7 win over Satellite Beach. Feb 6 - Don Gullett allows just one hit, a Gene Clines single, in beating the Roadies 5-0. Feb 7 - Gene Tenace again with the longball, this time a grand slam against Winchester in the Reds 9-7 win. Feb 8 - Tom Ragland goes 3 for 6 with 6 RBI. He and the rest of the Navigators rap out 19 hits in beating Satellite Beach 15-4. Feb 8 - Fran Healy and Dave Johnson each go 4 for 4 and Johnson drives in 5 as the Cardinals beat Hopewell 12-1. Feb 8 - Montgomery defeats Berwyn 14-2. Dave Nelson goes 3 for 5 with 5 RBI, a double and a HR. Feb 9 - The Redbirds get 20 hits in beating Winchester 12-0. Feb 10 - Ron Woods makes his mark in the 1973 record book with a grand slam HR in a 10-7 loss to Flatbush. Feb 17 - Mechanicsburg beats South Shore 10-9 in 13 innings. The game features an 8 run 7 th inning for the Flash, including Bill Robinson’s grand slam. Feb 17 - Hopewell abuses Snowflake 18-2 as they put up 26 hits. has one of the league’s all time best perfomances…a complete game 4 hit win plus he goes 5 for 6 at the plate with a double and 2 HR, 3 runs and 5 RBI! Feb 18 - Hopewell should have saved some of those hits…Dock Ellis shuts out the Dutchmen 6-0. Feb 20 - Mike Lum hits 2 triples for Satellite Beach and Bill Sharp goes 4 for 6 with 2 HR and 6 RBI as the Saturns beat Flatbush 8-6. Feb 20 - Reggie Jackson’s grand slam lifts Berwyn over Wisconsin 7-1. Feb 21 - Richie Scheinblum goes 5 for 5 with a double and a HR. Ohio wins 5-0. Feb 21 - A wild offensive display between Satellite Beach and Flatbush. Cesar Geronimo hits for the cycle, Frank Robinson hits 3 HR and drives in 7. Each team has 16 hits as the Saturns win again 16-11. Feb 25 - Don Wilson no hits the Militia. Don Baylor’s long fly ball is the closest anyone comes to getting a hit. Feb 26 - Mike Cuellar loses a no hitter with 2 outs in the 9 th against Brooklyn Center when George Mitterwald doubles to left.

Finally - Last month I made a joke about “Where is Preston Gomez when you need him?” I think he’s been found. In the February 21 game between Wisconsin and Berwyn, Ron Bryant is lifted for a pinch hitter in the 9 th inning while throwing a perfect game against the Barons. John Hiller added a perfect 9 th but walked Bob Watson with 2 outs in the 10 th . The no hitter was still in tact until the 11 th when the Barons scored a run off Bill Gogolewski for a 1-0 win. In real life Preston Gomez twice pinch hit for pitchers who were throwing no hitters. Gomez hit for Clay Kirby in the 8 th inning and for Don Wilson in the 9 th in 1974 against the Reds. Each time with his pitcher throwing a no hitter but his team was losing.

One More Managerial Change The new manager of the Giants is Steve Forbes. Steve plays in leagues with Lee, Tom and myself and will add some color to our league. Welcome aboard, Steve.

Rule Proposal Well, there isn’t a whole lot to talk about here. The one item we need to vote upon is: Should teams be required to cut to a certain number of players at the conclusion of the season? If so, should they cut to 28 or 30? Please send your votes via e-mail this month. Please vote on both questions. Voting will close March 20.

A look ahead to the 1974 draft While some of us are looking to the playoffs, others are looking to the draft. While 1974 is not as deep of a draft as 1973 was, it is arguably the best top loaded draft in our league’s history.

Hall of Fame George Brett and Robin Yount should easily go 1 and 2 in next year’s draft. Unless you have Mike Schmidt at third base, Brett would seem to be the man to go #1. He hits over .300 in all but 2 years from 1975 to 1985, including a monstrous .390 in 1980. Yount is the perfect fit for the team who needs a shortstop. He has just one year under .270 from 1977 to 1989. While he leaves the shortstop position after 1984, he then turns into one of the games better defensive centerfielders.

The Boston Phenoms Fred Lynn and Jim Rice took the majors by storm in 1975. Lynn was the AL Rookie of the Year and MVP while Rice provided solid numbers until he erupted in 1977. During the years of 77-79 there was no better hitter than Rice, who averaged .320, 41 HR and 128 RBI. Later in his career he was noted for being one of baseball’s more frequent victims of the double play ball. Lynn’s career is highlighted by his .331, 47-7-21 year of 1975 and his .333, 42-1-39 season of 1979. Lynn was a fearless defensive player, and this trait often landed him on the disabled list. Lynn was consistent at the plate and he knew how to draw a walk.

Power Hitters Two of the late 70s, early 80s power hitters came to the big leagues in 1974. Third baseman Larry Parrish has career batting stats similar to those of Ron Cey, but really didn’t become a consistent hitter until he left the Expos for Texas in 1982. His best season though was with Montreal in 1979 where he hit .307 with 30 HR. Andre Thornton got off to a great start in 1975 and he looked like one of the players upon whom the Cubs would build a future winner. He got injured and in 1976 was sent to the Expos for Larry Biittner. In 1977 he went to Cleveland and became the power hitter that the Cubs had envisioned him to be just 2 years prior. From 1977 to 1984 Thornton hit 25 or more HRs in 5 of the 7 seasons. Sixto Lezcano had an up and down career that completely fizzled in 1983. His best season was also 1979 where he hit .321 with 28 HR and 101 RBI. Finally there is Big . Imagine Willie Horton as a catcher…that was Cliff. He was made to DH and he’ll give some of the best part time cards you’ll ever see. Johnson’s best years are 1975, 1977 and 1979 where he hits 20, 22 and 18 HR respectively. He hangs around as a DH and in 1984 hits .304 as a platoon DH.

The others Each of the following have their own niche on a team…need someone on base? Try Mike Hargrove or Greg Gross. Need a shortstop? There’s Rick Burleson and the no glove Frank Taveras. Got some time to wait? Art Howe and the infamous Mario Mendoza have some value a few years down the road. Catching needed? There’s Rick Dempsey, Barry Foote, Charlie Moore, and one of the best defensive catchers of all time, Jim Sundberg. Speed on the bases? Ron LeFlore was a pretty good lead off man for Detroit and later Montreal. Claudell Washington was no slouch either, though he didn’t run as much as LeFlore. Al Cowens is more known for his glove and arm, but occasionally he would post some pretty impressive offensive numbers. The starting pitchers all have limited careers but some value: Bob Forsch, Ed Figueroa, John Montefusco, Ed Halicki, Geoff Zahn, Craig Swan and Wayne Garland. Mike Garman or Bob Apodaca may be the best reliever to enter the league in 1974.
