  • A Theological Reading of the Gideon-Abimelech Narrative
YAHWEH vERsus BAALISM A THEOLOGICAL READING OF THE GIDEON-ABIMELECH NARRATIVE WOLFGANG BLUEDORN A thesis submitted to Cheltenham and Gloucester College of Higher Education in accordance with the requirements of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Faculty of Arts & Humanities April 1999 ABSTRACT This study attemptsto describethe contribution of the Abimelech narrative for the theologyof Judges. It is claimedthat the Gideonnarrative and the Abimelechnarrative need to be viewed as one narrative that focuseson the demonstrationof YHWH'S superiority over Baalism, and that the deliverance from the Midianites in the Gideon narrative, Abimelech's kingship, and the theme of retribution in the Abimelech narrative serve as the tangible matter by which the abstracttheological theme becomesnarratable. The introduction to the Gideon narrative, which focuses on Israel's idolatry in a previously unparalleled way in Judges, anticipates a theological narrative to demonstrate that YHWH is god. YHwH's prophet defines the general theological background and theme for the narrative by accusing Israel of having abandonedYHwH despite his deeds in their history and having worshipped foreign gods instead. YHWH calls Gideon to demolish the idolatrous objects of Baalism in response, so that Baalism becomes an example of any idolatrous cult. Joash as the representativeof Baalism specifies the defined theme by proposing that whichever god demonstrateshis divine power shall be recognised as god. The following episodesof the battle against the Midianites contrast Gideon's inadequateresources with his selfish attempt to be honoured for the victory, assignthe victory to YHWH,who remains in control and who thus demonstrateshis divine power, and show that Baal is not presentin the narrative.

The present research examines how a motivational process triggered by a social- is psychological intervention propagates benefits over a long period of time and creates an enduring shift and in the way people interpret subsequent adversity. During their first or second year of college, 183 Latino and White students completed either a values affirmation intervention or control exercise as part of a user Association laboratory study. In the affirmation intervention, students wrote about a core personal value, an exercise that has been found in previous research to buffer minority students against the stress of being negatively stereotyped in school. This single affirmation improved the college grade point average (GPA) of Latino individual students over 2 years. Students were re-recruited for a follow-up session near the end of those 2 years. the Results indicated that GPA benefits occurred, in part, because the affirmation shifted the way Latino Psychological of students spontaneously responded to subsequent stressors.

  • Seabiscuit Races Again at Remington Carriage Museum Life Size Bronze of Famous Racehorse and Alberta Jockey George Woolf Unveiled
July 16, 2010 Seabiscuit races again at Remington Carriage Museum Life size bronze of famous racehorse and Alberta jockey George Woolf unveiled Cardston... “So Long, Charley!” is the name of the statue depicting Cardston hero George Woolf riding Seabiscuit to victory in the riveting 1938 race against War Admiral. The statue will be unveiled Saturday, July 17, at the Remington Carriage Museum in honour of what would have been Woolf’s 100th birthday. Two Albertans, Woolf and Seabiscuit’s other principal jockey, Edmonton native Red Pollard, rose to instant world-wide fame with the surprise win in the “Match of the Century.” The $150,000 statue was commissioned and donated to the Province of Alberta by Cardston ranchers Jack and Ida Lowe. It will stand outside the Remington Carriage Museum in Cardston, a provincial facility that houses the largest collection of horse-drawn vehicles in North America. The statue will strengthen the museum visitor experience by celebrating a thrilling chapter in horse racing history and the supreme achievement of an Alberta horseman. “This statue captures an incredible moment of unexpected triumph in a story that many people do not realize has a strong Alberta connection,” said Lindsay Blackett, Minister of Culture and Community Spirit. “On behalf of the Government of Alberta, I would like to thank Jack and Ida Lowe for their generous donation and strong commitment to showcasing Alberta’s rich history.” Created by Lethbridge artist Don Toney, the statue depicts the moment when Woolf called out “So long, Charley!” to War Admiral’s jockey Charley Kurtsinger as Seabiscuit surged to the lead at Maryland’s Pimlico Race Course, ultimately winning by four lengths and setting a new track record.

  • Race Horse Man.”33
Author: Mooney • Filename: AMHERST READS EXCERPT Prologue The Loss of the Stirrup Has Won the Race Everything depended on the start. In a dash race of a quarter mile like the one North Carolina planter Willie Jones and his opponent had agreed to, the two horses circled and plunged beside the starter, as their jockeys tried desperately to keep their mounts calm. All strategy would be exhausted after the first moment. From then until the horses crossed the finish line, the contest would be one of main force, as the horses and riders jostled each other along the narrow track laid out amid the crowd. The ritual was a rough but much-beloved tradition of the colonial South, its tricks and subtleties as much to be savored as victory itself. Jones and an old friend from Virginia had agreed to an intercolonial match race and staked a hundred hogsheads of tobacco each on the outcome. Jones had sent his entry, the delicate, nervous Paoli, ahead to the course and had arrived himself only shortly before the start. No sooner had he dismounted than Austin Curtis, the enslaved black man who was Jones’s trusted jockey and groom and would later serve as his trainer and stable supervisor, delivered a nasty surprise. Their opponent was to be the mare that everyone knew as Bynum’s Big Filly, though Jones and her owner had an agreement to the contrary. Willie Jones preferred to be the man surprising rather than the man surprised when it came to the races. By the early 1770s, when Paoli faced Bynum’s Big Filly, he had firmly established himself as a crafty competitor.
