Well we have had a chance to skate at 7 different City of Calgary arenas across all 4 quadrants since Jimmie Condon went down – many skaters have been able to take advantage of alternate ice options. A huge thank you to Nicole and Jaime Lyn for keeping the coaches well informed of all the alternate ice options! Skaters will receive a full program refund for all sessions missed during the closure. Your March 1st installment payment will still be processed and once we know the exact return date we will start working on refunds. We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience this caused; the City is doing everything possible to get Jimmie Condon back up and running and we expect to return to regular programming by March 16th. Calalta congratulates the Alberta Winter Games Skaters Well done everyone! Kieryn McHale – Bronze Medallist - Novice Addison Pehl – Bronze Medallist - Pre-Novice Isabel Barcenas-Squire - STAR 8 Olivia Rodzon - STAR 8 Atlee Graham - Juvenile Abbie Wiebe – Pre-Novice Brynley Gross - Novice Welcome to our new Board Members Three new faces at the Board room table! Calalta would like to welcome Dayle Drummond, Cami Balan and Janine Heiderick. Dayle Drummond I started skating at the age of 5 at the North Bay FS Club and stayed until I was 15. While volunteering for Skate Canada, I discovered Adult FS and have since become a huge part of the adult figure skating community at Calalta. I am currently working towards my free skate. I was with BMO for 44 years and most recently with BMO Private Banking as a lending specialist. I am married but no kids I have wanted to become a board member for a few years. I have come to a time in my life that I want to give back to society and am looking forward to helping out Calalta in any way I can. I feel honoured to have been asked to join this board. Cami Balan I'm a parent who's been watching figure skating from the stands for the last 7 years. My knowledge in this field grew alongside my daughter and although I still have to pay very close attention, I'm proud to be able to tell the jumps apart (can't tell if they were on the right edge or fully rotated, those are just details). I'm going to work on learning the ice dance terminology next. My daughter is 12 and started with Calalta in the CanSkate program. She is currently competing in Star 6 and Artistic events. Outside the rink I'm a Project Manager working with a consulting firm primarily on software development projects. I've been involved in sport activities all my life and am a huge fan of gymnastics and figure skating. For the past few years I participated in CrossFit. I am looking forward to working with the Calalta board members. I'm hoping to be able to help provide the best experience in figure skating for everyone, from pre-school age to adult and to help keep athletes in this field longer. Janine Heiderich I have a son Parker who skates as a Juvenile level skater at COP We come from a sports backgrounds-I was a synchronized swimmer who competed Nationally and in the USA, plus had my technical NCCP level 3 coaching certificate. My husband was a gymnast and holds an international judging license for Canada and has judged in Japan and Hungary as his hobby. I have sat on a few boards and am looking forward to joining Calalta’s. I firmly believe in good communication and transparency. I also hope to bring a good positive attitude and ideas. The Hospitality Coordinator will plan the menus (usually soup and sandwiches) and purchase food. You don’t have to be on- site during the entire test days or Spring Event, but you do have to ensure the food is ready 1 hour prior to the start of the event. There will be a call for volunteers to support this role. Ice Show “Icon-A-Mania” is Sunday May 31, 2020– WinSport Arena A Check your emails (Jan 2020) for information on how to sign up to participate (STAR 4 and up), order costumes or to audition for a guest role. All group program skaters are automatically signed up to skate a number in the ice show. Skaters must check in with rink chairs prior to getting on the ice • Train your skater to check in with the rink chair for every session! Remember the Rink Chairs are just parents and are trying to do their best and don’t always know all the kids getting on the ice. • Skaters are not allowed to overlap sessions. If you are registered to skate from 8:15-9:15 that is your session. You can’t get on at 8:00 and skate until 9:00 pm. You must skate the session you are registered for. • Skaters can switch from one session to another the same day. For example, if your skater is registered for 5:15-6:00 pm they can switch to 6:00-6:45 pm with coach approval and if that session is not full and the level is appropriate for the skater. The rink chair can note this in the attendance. • For safety reason please don’t wear bobby pins, they easily fall out and become a hazard to all skaters. Important Dates for March, April and May 2020 Please note these dates and times may change! Please contact your coach for details! Rink Link June/July 2014 22013 Thirty Twin Cities Area Skaters Perform in Stars on Ice Post-Olympic Tour! Carey Tinkelenberg, Northfield Skating School Director and Consultant to U.S. Figure Skating On May 4th, 2014, 30 local skaters performed alongside the Olympic cast of Stars On Ice at the Xcel Center in St. Paul. The event, which included Olympic gold medalists Meryl Davis and Charlie White and Olympic bronze medalists Gracie Gold and Jeremy Abbott, was the first to feature a new partnership between U.S. Figure Skating and Stars On Ice which incorporated local skaters into the show's opening number. Skaters from 11 clubs in Minnesota and Wisconsin performed to Pharrell's hit song "Happy" to open the show's second act. U.S. Figure Skating members ages 18 and under who had passed their juvenile free skate or novice moves-in-the-field tests were eligible to participate. The group rehearsed on and off-ice at the Eagan Civic Arena leading up to the performance. Before their dress rehearsal at the Xcel center, the skaters experienced an exclusive meet and greet rinkside with the Stars on Ice cast. Coordinators were thrilled at the rare chance to bring skaters from so many clubs together to promote local figure skating and to provide skaters with a professional experience and the chance to skate with the stars of their sport. This program was under the direction of U.S. Figure Skating and local coordinator Carey Tinkelenberg, with the coaching team of Peter Biver, Carey Tinkelenberg, and Amanda Truax.
