I was watching Rebecca, The Story of Adele H., and Beauty and the Beast, and I really started to think that maybe she was poisoning me. So, that kernel of an idea, I had in my mind when I started working on writing something.” ● “Paul will talk about the project early on,” says Sellar. “He’ll show me rough drafts. He’ll show me scenes. I’ll comment. We’ll go back and forth on stuff. We’ll start doing research together. And when he’s got a draft we all feel is good enough to send out to financiers, usually between him and his agent we’ll come up with where we’re going to send it.” - JoAnne Sellar WRITING (Paul Thomas Anderson) ● National Board of Review award for best original screenplay ● Anderson was especially intrigued by a photograph of Dior in a workroom of women dressed in white coats. -

Shepherd Dean, Scripps College of Communication ii ABSTRACT LABOVITZ, KATIE E., M.S., June 2011, Journalism A Content Analysis of the Gender of Academy Award Nominees and Winners for Films Released between 1927 and 2010 (92 pp.) Director of Thesis: Joseph P. Bernt Using a coding instrument designed specifically for this study, the researcher analyzed the gender of Academy Award nominees and winners in all categories in which potential for direct competition between women and men existed. This study examined if there was gender discrepancy in terms of whose work was recognized in the film industry by the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences. Data from 83 Academy Awards ceremonies honoring the films released from 1927 to 2010 yielded 1,471 cases that, when analyzed, supported the statement that more men than women have been nominated for, and winners of, Academy Awards in every category other than Costume Design. Examining the results by year of nominations, wins, and categories showed trends in the numbers of women and men nominees and winners. -

Humanist Narratology and the Suburban Ensemble Dramedy
Humanist Narratology and the Suburban Ensemble Dramedy Wyatt Moss-Wellington A thesis submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of: Doctor of Philosophy Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences University of Sydney 2017 DECLARATION OF ORIGINALITY This is to certify that to the best of my knowledge, the content of this thesis is my own work. This thesis has not been submitted for any degree or other purposes. I certify that the intellectual content of this thesis is the product of my own work and that all the assistance received in preparing this thesis and sources have been acknowledged. Wyatt Moss-Wellington 2 ABSTRACT What is a “humanistic drama”? Although we might describe narrative works as humanist, and references to the humanistic drama abound across a breadth of critical media, including film and literary theory, the parameters of these terms remain elliptical. My work attempts to clarify the narrative conditions of humanism. In particular, humanists ask how we use narrative texts to complicate our understanding of others, and question the ethics and efficacy of attempts to represent human social complexity in fiction. After historicising narrative humanism and situating it among related philosophies, I develop humanist hermeneutics as a method for reading fictive texts, and provide examples of such readings. I integrate literary Darwinism, anthropology, cognitive science and social psychology into a social narratology, which catalogues the social functions of narrative. This expansive study asks how we can unite the descriptive capabilities of social science with the more prescriptive ethical inquiry of traditional humanism, and aims to demonstrate their productive compatibility. -
