  • Regenerating the Valletta Grand Harbour Area Abstract
Restoring Life in the City: Regenerating the Valletta Grand Harbour Area Nadia Theuma(1), Anthony Theuma (2) (1)Institute of Tourism, Travel and Culture, University of Malta (2)Paragon Europe, Malta [email protected] Abstract Harbour Cities are formed by the economic, political, social and cultural activity that surrounds them. In recent years a number harbour cities worldwide have been at the forefront of regeneration – and re-building their reality based on revived cultural centres, new commercial activity and international links rather than basing their success on the industrial activity synonymous with their past lives. Valletta, Malta’s harbour – city region is one such city. This paper traces the fate of the Grand Harbour and its neighbouring cities in the island of Malta through the events of past centuries and the most recent regeneration projects. This paper will highlight the importance that harbours have for the prosperity of the urban areas. By analysing the rise and fall of the city regions, this paper will also demonstrate that regeneration of harbour areas has to be in line with the regeneration of the surrounding cities – one does not occur without another. The findings of this paper are based on research conducted in the area during the past eight years through three EU funded projects.1 Key Words: grand harbour, cities, socio-economic development, DevelopMed, DELTA, Malta 1 The Projects are: (1) DevelopMed – Interreg Project (a project commenced in 2009 run by the Marche Region, Italy with Paragon Europe, representing

Valletta in the 17th and 18th centuries To the original group of public buildings in Valletta the Order added in the 17th and 18th centuries, a theatre, a library, a custom house and a municipal palace for the Università of Valletta and the Three Cities. The Law Courts (Castellania) were rebuilt and the Church of St John was decorated by the paintings and sculpture of the Neapolitan artist Mattia Preti. During the 18th century new buildings in Valletta had a more worldly use. In 1732 the Manoel Theatre was built (the oldest standing theatre in Europe today), a library and warehouses along the Valletta Grand Harbour waterfront. Grand Master Pinto’s warehouses (known as Pinto Wharf) were built in the second half of the 18th century – today these have become the Valletta Waterfront sea- passenger terminal. The Grandmaster’s Palace and most of the auberges had their façade decorated on the th baroque style. Some of the richest houses (eg.Casa Rocca Piccola) were built in the 18 century. Strada San Giorgio and Strada Mercanti were the best streets of Valletta having most of the finest buildings with shops, stores or workrooms in the ground floor. Strada Forni and Strada San Paolo were mainly residential having fewer shops and fewer public buildings. In the 17th century more and more people went to live within the walls of the city.

6/23/2020 History of Malta under the Order of Saint John - Wikipedia History of Malta under the Order of Saint John Malta was ruled by the Order of Saint John as a vassal state of the Kingdom of Sicily from 1530 to 1798. The islands of Malta Malta and Gozo, as well as the city of Tripoli in modern Libya, were Order of Saint John of granted to the Order by Spanish Emperor Charles V in 1530, Jerusalem following the loss of Rhodes. The Ottoman Empire managed to Ordine di San Giovanni di capture Tripoli from the Order in 1551, but an attempt to take Gerusalemme (in Italian) Malta in 1565 failed. Ordni ta' San Ġwann ta' Following the 1565 siege, the Order decided to settle Ġerusalemm (in Maltese) permanently in Malta and began to construct a new capital city, 1530–1798 Valletta. For the next two centuries, Malta went through a Golden Age, characterized by a flourishing of the arts, architecture, and an overall improvement in Maltese society.[2] In the mid-17th century, the Order was the de jure proprietor over some islands in the Caribbean, making it the smallest state to colonize the Americas.. Flag The Order began to decline in the 1770s, and was severely Coat of arms weakened by the French Revolution in 1792. In 1798, French forces under Napoleon invaded Malta and expelled the Order, resulting in the French occupation of Malta. The Maltese eventually rebelled against the French, and the islands became a British protectorate in 1800. Malta was to be returned to the Order by the Treaty of Amiens in 1802, but the British remained in control and the islands formally became a British colony by the Treaty of Paris in 1814.

MALTESE E-NEWSLETTER 330 July 2020 1 MALTESE E-NEWSLETTER 330 July 2020 Foreign Minister stresses need for peaceful resolution to Libyan conflict in official visit to Turkey In meeting with Turkish counterpart, Evarist Bartolo underlines need for peace in Libya in light of conflict’s dire consequences for Malta by Massimo Costa www.maltatoday.com.mt Foreign Minister Evarist Bartolo met with his Turkish counterpart Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu in an official visit to Ankara A peaceful resolution to the Libyan conflict is the only way of preventing further serious consequences for Malta and the rest of Europe, Evarist Bartolo said in an official visit to Turkey. The Foreign Minister met with his Turkish counterpart Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu in Ankara on Tuesday, with the two exchanging views about the impact of the unfolding Libyan scenario on migration, and the need for more concerted efforts to disrupt the business model of human smugglers and traffickers. Bartolo stressed that there is no alternative to the peaceful resolution of the Libyan conflict, and augured that the parties involved would arrive at a lasting ceasefire for the common good of the Libyan people. The minister elaborated that the solution to the situation in Libya should be Libyan-led and should preserve a single and united country, in the hands of the Libyans themselves. Events in Libya were resulting in dire consequences on Malta and the rest of Europe, Bartolo said, as he emphasised that peace and stability in Libya would translate into peace and security in the Mediterranean as well as in Europe. This made it urgent for the EU to facilitate and provide active support to the resolution of the conflict.

  • THE ISLAND ORDER STATE on MALTA, and ITS HARBOUR C.1530−C.1624
THE ISLAND ORDER STATE ON MALTA, AND ITS HARBOUR c.1530−c.1624 Joan Abela & Emanuel Buttigieg In Hospitaller historiography, the Rhodian phase (1306/09-1522) is often discussed in terms of the development of an ‘Island Order State’ (henceforth IOS),1 that is, the coming together of the international Order of St John and the island of Rhodes (and other Aegean outposts) led to the formation of a unique political structure in late medieval Europe. A key characteristic of this IOS was its dependence on outside sources for its needs, in particular, to replenish its ruling caste of knights who all came from outside Rhodes. On the other hand, the IOS shared many similarities with other polities, in that it had to deal with issues that any state was faced with, ranging from religious affairs to questions related to urban development, defence, and the economy. Yet in all these spheres the IOS often had to be innovative as it dealt with its own particular challenges, not least the constant factor of being on the frontier with the 1 The classic ‘order state’ is considered to have been created in Prussia by the Teutonic order. According to Anthony Luttrell, the origin of the phrase ‘island order state’ to discuss Hospitaller Rhodes seems uncertain. It was used in A. Luttrell, The Hospitaller State on Rhodes and its Western Provinces: 1306-1462, Aldershot 1999, ix. In the context of Rhodes ― and in particular Malta ― it is a historiographical category of analysis that is still in relative infancy but which holds a lot of potential for thinking creatively about how the Order functioned as a state when its headquarters was located on these two islands; see A.
