Gozo, which is a three hilled island, is greener and more picturesque than Malta. During this tour you will visit The National Shrine of the Blessed Virgin of Ta’ Pinu which is a Roman Catholic basilica and national shrine located 700 metres from the village of Gharb. The basilica is located in the edge of a cliff in open countryside which allows visitors to enjoy beautiful views of the area. You will then visit Dwejra Bay where you could see until 8th March 2017, a natural arch featuring a table-like rock over the sea. Here, you will also see The Inland Sea & il-Gebla tal-General. If weather permits, you can also purchase a short boat ride. A visit to a Crafts Shop is a must. At this shop you will see stone works, marble, traditional food, local lace and many other items. This is the perfect place where you can buy a souvenir which will remind you of Gozo. You will then visit Victoria which is the capital of Gozo. Victoria is the name given in 1897 by the British government on the occasion of Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee, at the request of the Bishop of Malta, Mons. Sir Pietro Pace. However Gozitans still often refer to it by its old name, Rabat. The area around Victoria, situated on a hill near the centre of the island has been settled since Neolithic times. In the centre of Victoria lies The Cittadella, a historic fortified city. The Cittadella also called at The Citadel, is on Malta’s tentative list of future World Heritage Sites by UNESCO, who describes it as a small fortified town. An old prison is located within the city, as are the Courts of Justice. After this visit you will stop for lunch in a restaurant in Rabat. During the tour you will drive past Cospicua, a double-fortified harbour city and the largest of the three. It was also given a title as Citta’ Cottonera, but erroneously the title is now used to define the whole region. You will then arrive in Vittoriosa. Vittoriosa is ideally situated for safe anchorage and over time it has developed a very long history with maritime, mercantile and military activities. Prior to the establishment of Valletta as capital and main city of Malta, military powers that wanted to rule the Maltese islands would need to obtain control of Vittoriosa due to its significant position in the Grand Harbour. The third city Senglea is also called Civitas Invicta because it managed to resist the Ottoman invasion at the Great Siege of 1565. The name Senglea was given by the grandmaster who built it, Claude De La Sengle. The island on which Senglea lies was joined by a land bridge to Cospicua during the time of the Knights of St. John and as a result, it became peninsular in shape. During this tour you will walk through the various narrow streets shaded by many historic churches and buildings. You will then drive to the Marsovin Cellars in Marsa. The wine tasting tour commences with a historical introduction amongst original artefacts, followed by an explanation about the process of how the locally grown grapes are pressed, fermented and eventually transformed into wine. A walk through the 400-year-old ‘Ageing Pick-up time Cellars’ is an authentic and true piece of Maltese heritage. The wine sampling is held in the Marsovin wine bar, where trained staff guide Cirkewwa 0830 guests through a wine tasting session to sample different Marsovin Mellieha 0840 wines accompanied by a selection of local savouries like maltese Xemxija 0850 bread and cheese. The Rotunda also famous as the Mosta Dome is the third largest unsupported dome in the whole World with an internal diameter of 37.2 metres and walls nearly 9.1 metres thick. This church was built in the 18th Century and became known throughout the country in 1942 when during World War II, a dropped bomb failed to explode, thus sparing the lives of some 300 people. The next stop is the town of Ta’Qali, located nearby was once a British WWII outpost, but has been converted to a village for local handicrafts. Here you will be able to watch local artisans at work blowing elaborate glass art pieces, intricately assembling original silver filigree jewellery and many more. This is the perfect place to pick up treasures that will remind you of your Malta visit. You will then visit Mdina. Mdina is built on a plateau in the centre of the island, the city’s old Baroque buildings, cathedral and magnificent bastion walls dominate the rural skyline. Mdina, once the capital city of Malta has had many names including Melita (Roman Occupation), Medina (Arabic Occupation), Citta’ Nobile (Knights of St. John) and Citta Vecchia (after Valletta was built). Today is also referred as the Silent City since it inspires tranquillity at any time of the day or night. In April 2021, 1,430 promise of sale agreements relating to residential property were registered, an increase of 1,161 agreements over the same period last year. Residential Property Transactions: April 2021 Cut-off date: Final Deeds of Sale 4 May 2021 In April 2021, the number of fi nal deeds of sale relating to residential property amounted to 1,130, an increase of 540 deeds when compared to those registered a year earlier (Table 1). The value of these deeds totalled €228.4 million, 91.6 per cent higher than the corresponding value recorded in April 2020 (Table 2). With regard to the region the property is situated in, the highest numbers of fi nal deeds of sale were recorded in the two regions of Mellieħa and St Paul’s Bay, and Ħaż-Żabbar, Xgħajra, Żejtun, Birżebbuġa, Marsaskala and Marsaxlokk, at 150 and 143 respectively. The lowest numbers of deeds were noted in the region of Cottonera, and the region of Mdina, Ħad-Dingli, Rabat, Mtarfa and Mġarr. In these regions, 13 and 32 deeds respectively were recorded (Table 3). Chart 1.     MALTESE NEWSLETTER 151 January 2017 In its news bulletin broadcast TVM reported on the estimated number of Maltese living overseas. According to statistics held by TVM the number of Maltese up to the fifth generation residing abroad around the world is estimated at about 900,000, which more than double the population living in Malta. By far the largest number of Maltese descendants up to the fifth generation lives in Australia where, according to the news report, from the census they are estimated at 447,000. The second largest group of Maltese overseas lives in the United States numbering 220,000 and England with 91,000 is the third largest. The surprising news was that there are Maltese who reside in places that one does not expect to find them, such as, Macao, Marshall Islands, Solomon Islands, Samoa, Christmas Island, Vanuatu as well as Trinidad and Tobago. There are some, if only a few individuals, living in countries such as Iran, Iraq, Botswana and Congo. Malta’s membership of the European Union appears to have led to a substantial increase in the number of Maltese living in Belgium now numbering about 668. In continental Europe the Maltese presence includes 900 in Italy, 23 in the Vatican, 600 in France and 276 in the Netherlands. There is also a large longstanding Maltese community on the Mediterranean island of Corfu numbering 7,000. Malta’s commercial ties with the Middle East have led to an increase of Maltese presence in those countries including 733 in the United Arab Emirates and 36 in Qatar among others.

Keywords: Lemna minuta, valleys, watercourses, alien species, invasive species, flora of Malta INTRODUCTION Lemna minuta Kunth (synonyms: L. minuscula Heter ; L. minima Phil ex Hegelm) commonly known as Least Duckweed, is native to the eastern area of North America, western coasts of Mexico and stretches in temprate zones in Central and South America (Mesterházy et al., 2007). It was introduced into Europe in the last third of the 20th Century where, soon after, it had become naturalised in several European countries. It was first recorded in Europe erroneously as L. valdiviana from Biarritz, South West of France in 1965 and then as L. minuscula from Cambridge, UK in 1977 (Landolt, 1979 cited in Lacey, 2003). Today, 45 years after its first published occurrence, L. minuta is widespread throughout Europe and it is recorded from France, England, Belgium, Germany, (GRIN; GBIF), Switzerland, Ukraine (GRIN), Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Sweden (GBIF), Ireland (Lacey, 2003), Hungary (Mesterházy et al., 2007), Slovakia (Feráková & Onderíková, 1998), Romania (Ciocârlan, 2000), Greece (Landolt, 1986), Austria (Fischer et al., 2005) and Italy (Desfayes, 1993 cited in Iamonico et al., 2010 ; Conti et al., 2005).

The original name was I Fanciulli di Olnano meaning the young children of Olnano, as the aim of the group was to explain history visually to children. Since then the group has developed Dolceria Appettitosa into a historical re-enactment group with adults Main Street and children, including various thematic sections Rabat within its ranks specializing in Dance, Singing, Tel: (00356) 21 451042 Embroidery, Medieval kitchen and other artisan skills. Detailed armour of some of the members of the group highlights the military aspects of Medieval times. Anakron Living History This group of enthusiasts dedicate their time to the re-enactment of the Medieval way of life by authentically emulating the daily aspects of the period such as socialising, combat practice and playing of Medieval instruments. The Medieval Tavern was the main centre of recreational, entertainment, gambling and where hearty home cooked meal was always to be found. Fabio Zaganelli The show is called “Lost in the Middle Ages”. Here Fabio acts as Fabius the Court Jester and beloved fool of the people. A playful saltimbanco and histrionic character, he creates fun and involves onlookers of all ages, Fabio never fails to amaze his audiences with high level circus skills and comedy acts, improvised dialogue plays and rhymes, poetry and rigmaroles. Fabio is an able juggler, acrobat, fakir and the way he plays with fi re makes him a real showman. BIBITA Bibita the Maltese minstrel band made their public Cafe’ Bistro Wine Bar debut at last year’s Medieval Festival.
