Merton Heritage Service Spotter Guide: TO PARK :

Starting at South Wimbledon Underground Station. Cross over to the Tesco store and keep walking down the left side of Kingston Road towards .

Cross BRISBANE ROAD and just past the WIMBLEDON CARRIAGE CO. is a large building.

1. What is written around the curve of its doorway?

Next to that is the ELIM CHURCH

2. What date is carved high up on the wall?

3. What is written on the coat of arms above the door?

Walk a little further, stopping in front of A. HANNA’s piano shop. On the opposite side of the road is WIMBLEDON FIRE STATION. ( Stay on the left side of the road )

4. What type of tree is growing outside the building?

The SALVATION ARMY BUILDING is next to the Fire Station, 5. What is above the lettering in the centre of the building?

6. What is at the top of the building under the point of the roof?

Keep walking until you reach MANOR HOUSE.

7. What is different about the building compared to this picture of it in 1910?

Next door at No. 120 is the ST. JOHN’S AMBULANCE building.

8. How many arrows make up the brigade emblem shown on each side of the gates?

On the opposite side of the road is RUSSELL ROAD ( with a red estate agents on the corner.

Look down the road and you can see WIMBLEDON THEATRE in the distance.

9. What shape is under the angel on the theatre roof? Continue walking towards the MERTON PARK LEVEL CROSSING. Before crossing it look to the right , at the building on the left side of HARTFIELD ROAD.

10. The building is an unusual shape - how would you describe it?

Keep walking along Kingston Road, past DORSET ROAD. On your left you will see DORSET HALL, once the home of suffragette ROSE LAMARTINE YATES.

She spent many years campaigning to get votes for women in the UK.

If the wooden gates are open, You might be able to spot a stone statue of a dog that stood in Rose’s garden.

IF YOU WANT TO END YOUR WALK HERE, you can follow the same route in reverse to return to South Wimbledon Underground Station.

FOR A SLIGHTLY LONGER WALK, head straight on down the same side of KINGSTON ROAD, past DORSET ROAD and CHURCH LANE, then turn left into MOSTYN ROAD. Keep walking down MOSTYN ROAD and on the right, just past CHURCH PATH, you will see the entrance to JOHN INNES PARK.

Take a circuit round the park. If you are lucky, you may see ducks nesting on the pond.

Come back to the Park entrance and cross over MOSTYN ROAD to the other section of CHURCH PATH - there are little bollards at the entrance.

Walk along to ST. MARY’S Church and look at the local WAR MEMORIAL.

By the memorial, turn left CHURCH LANE. At the very end of this road, you will be back at KINGSTON RD. Turn right to walk back to SOUTH . We hope you have enjoyed your walk.
