I N T E R N A T I O N A L S K A T I N G U N I O N HEADQUARTERS ADDRESS: AVENUE JUSTE-OLIVIER17 CH 1006 LAUSANNE SWITZERLAND TELEPHONE (+41) 21 612 66 66 TELEFAX (+41) 21 612 66 77 E-MAIL: [email protected] January 6, 2016 For immediate release ISU European Speed Skating Championships– Minsk (BLR) Preview For the first time the ISU European Speed Skating Championships will be held in the Republic of Belarus. This year’s tournament will be held in Minsk, Belarus’ capital and largest city, on 9-10 January, 2016. It could be the last time that the European Championships consist of the big combination (Men) and the small combination (Ladies). In, 2017 the event will see the removal of the 10,000 m (Men) and the 5000m (Ladies) which will be replaced by the 1000m. Seven-time-champion Sven Kramer (NED) is favorite to win the Men’s tournament, whilst Ireen Wüst (NED) and Martina Sábliková (CZE) are expected to fight a tough battle for the Ladies’ gold. Competition format Unlike the World Cup, in which skaters race for single distance titles, at the European Championships performances in four distances add up to the final ranking. Times are calculated based on the 500m, for example the 1500m time will be divided by 3. In Minsk there will be a traditional two-day-competition, starting on Saturday with the Men’s and Ladies’ 500m followed by the 5000m for Men and the 3000m for Ladies. On Sunday racing resumes with the 1500m, and the 8 best ranked skaters after 3 distances qualify for the final distance: the 5000m for Ladies and the 10,000m for Men.

Brittany Bowe (USA) took the Ladies’ 1000m mark to 1:12.18 on the final day of the ISU World Cup Speed Skating in Salt Lake City. Pavel Kulizhnikov’s record well dried down on Sunday. The Russian won the men’s 500m, but could not beat the 34 second barrier once more: 34.13. Irene Schouten (NED) and Arjan Stroetinga (NED) won the Ladies’ and the Men’s Mass Start. The Chinese Ladies and the Canadian Men took gold in the Team Sprint. The high altitude Salt Lake City track led to an impressive record count over the entire event: 4 individual and 2 team world records, 39 national records, and 166 personal bests. Trading world records Bowe and Heather Richardson-Bergsma (NED) kept on trading world records. After Richardson took Bowe’s 1500m world record on Sunday, Bowe broke Richardson’s 1000m world record on Sunday. “We see records falling almost every race, that’s a pretty cool situation,” Bowe said. “It just goes to show both of our competitive edge. It could be either one of us any given day, I’m glad it was me today.” The American couple faced each other in the final pair again.

  • Salt Lake City, Utah, USA Redemption for Bergsma and Nuis in Double Dutch Success
February 16, 2020 Salt Lake City, Utah, USA Redemption for Bergsma and Nuis in double Dutch success All was well that ended well for Kjeld Nuis (NED) on the final day of the ISU World Single Distances Speed Skating Championships in Salt Lake City. After losing his world record en route to coming second in the 1000m on Saturday, the Olympic champion edged out his team-mate Thomas Krol to take the 1500m on Sunday. Joey Mantia (USA) surprised himself with a big personal best and a bronze on home ice. Dutch star Jorrit Bergsma made amends for a mediocre display in the 5000m and the 10000m by winning the Mass Start in style. In the Ladies’ tournament Ireen Wüst kept her cool to win the Ladies’ 1500m. The 33-year- old Dutch superstar relied on her vast experience to seize her career fifth 1500m world title and her 20th world title in total, including Allround honors. Russia's Evgenia Lalenkova and Elizaveta Kazelina took silver and bronze. Canada’s Ivanie Blondin won a career-second Mass Start world title after a chaotic final sprint, with Kim Bo-Reum (KOR) and Irene Schouten (NED) collecting silver and bronze respectively. Men’s 1500m: Everything comes good for Nuis Kjeld Nuis burst into tears after coming off the podium clutching the gold medal for his career second world title in the 1500m. "It's been such a tough run-up [to this tournament]," the Dutch skater said. The Olympic 1000m and 1500m champion missed his country’s world championships trials due to illness but was handed a wild card at the expense of Koen Verweij (NED), who subsequently went to court to fight the decision.

February 26, 2020 Hamar, Norway Four ISU World Speed Skating titles up for grabs at historic first in Hamar The famous Hamar Vikingskipet, home of the 1994 Olympic Speed Skating, will host the first combined ISU World Sprint & World Allround Speed Skating Championships in Speed Skating history this weekend. Previously the Allround and Sprint Championships were held separately. Last year Patrick Roest (NED) and Martina Sáblíková (CZE) won the ISU World Allround Speed Skating titles in Calgary, while Pavel Kulizhnikov (RUS) and Nao Kodaira (JPN) took the ISU World Sprint Speed Skating titles in Heerenveen. All four champions will be present in Hamar to defend their titles. The Sprint Championships are on Friday and Saturday and the Allround tournaments on Saturday and Sunday. Sprint Men: Who can beat Kulizhnikov? After winning both the 500m and the 1000m title at the ISU World Single Distances Speed Skating Championships in Salt Lake City, another win is what you would expect from the defending champion Pavel Kulizhnikov (RUS) in Hamar. Kulizhnikov already won the ISU World Sprint Speed Skating Championships title in 2015, 2016 and 2019. In the years in between, Kai Verbij (NED) and Håvard Lorentzen (NOR) took the honors, but both the Dutchman and the Norwegian haven't shown too much this season yet. Kjeld Nuis (NED), who took silver in 2018, could be one of Kulizhnikov's challengers, but the Dutchman is much slower in the 500m and in the 1000m at the ISU World Single Distances Speed Skating Championships in Salt Lake City two weeks ago, he conceded more than a second when the Russian skated his world record of 1:05.69.

Kuper Department of Economics, Econometrics and Finance, University of Groningen, PO Box 800, 9700 AV Groningen, The Netherlands Gerard Sierksma* Department of Operations, University of Groningen, PO Box 800, 9700 AV Groningen, The Netherlands In 1998, the International Skating Union and the International Olympic Committee decided to skate the 500-m twice during World Single Distances Championships, Olympic Games, and World Cups. The decision was based on a study by the Norwegian statistician N. L. Hjort, who showed that in the period 1984–1994, there was a signifi- cant difference between 500-m times skated with a start in the inner and outer lanes. Since the introduction of the clap skate in the season 1997–1998, however, there has been a general feeling that this differ- ence is no longer significant. In this article we show that this is, in fact, the case. Keywords and Phrases: sports, clap skate, statistics. 1 Inner–outer lane problem A 500-m speed skating race is performed by pairs of skaters. A draw decides whether a skater starts in either the inner or the outer lane of the 400-m rink; see Figure 1. After the first curve, skaters change lanes at the ‘crossing line’. The second curve is the major cause of the difference in time between inner and outer starts.
