LOCATION

The main building of Alexandru Ioan Cuza University (Building A) is situated on the Copou Hill, 11 Bd. Carol I, within 20-minutes walk from the railway station and 15 minutes from the old city centre. This building is over 100 years old and it used to be called "the University Palace"; it is one of the finest buildings of the city and perhaps the finest University building in the whole country, giving Iaİi a marked academic air. Eight of the 15 faculties are housed in building A (Chemistry, History, Law, Letters, Mathematics, Philosophy, Physics, and Catholic Theology). Building B, located just across the street, 22A Bd. Carol I, houses the Faculties of Biology, Geography-Geology, and Economics and Business Administration. The Faculty of Computer Science is housed by the modern building of the University Computer Centre (Building C, 16 Str. General Berthelot), while the Faculty of Physical Education and Sports, and the Faculty of Psychology and Education Sciences are located in Building D, 3 Str. Toma Cozma. Both buildings C and D are also near the main University building. The Faculty of Orthodox Theology is in Building T, in the old city centre (45 Bd. Stefan cel Mare si Sfant). The main university campus is situated in the close vicinity of the main University building. Gaudeamus Centre for International Exchanges is within 5-minutes walk from the University, and Titu Maiorescu Canteen is just near the University.

Socrates-Erasmus Programme

Since the first Institutional Contract was signed between our University and the European Commission in 1998, 1812 outgoing student mobilities (12% of the Erasmus students in Romania) and 415 outgoing teaching mobilities of the University took place to EU partner institutions. The number of foreign students choosing our University for their Erasmus mobility has constantly increased during the last three academic years, reaching at present almost 100 students per year. As to teaching staff, more than 350 from our partner universities held lectures and conferences as part of their Erasmus mobilities in our University.

INTERNET FACILITIES

In Gaudeamus Centre for International Exchanges, Internet connection can be provided in each room. Students only need to fill in a special form and pay 5 EUR per month. Almost all faculties have computer rooms, where students can have free-of-charge access to Internet. It is possible to use these computers only based on the student card, which proves that the student is registered at the respective faculty.

MEDICAL SERVICES

At the Students‘ Medical Office no. 7 all students of our University can have free-of-charge medical assistance: medical examinations, prescriptions, treatments, etc. Students must show their student card/certificate, their passport and, if necessary, their medical insurance.

5 MEALS

Students can cook their own meals (Gaudeamus Centre offers facilities for cooking) or eat at the university student cafeteria (Titu Maiorescu Canteen). This cafeteria is situated in the Titu Maiorescu Campus, near the main University building. Students can have breakfast, lunch and dinner at about 5 EUR. There are also other pizzerias and restaurants in the area (including Gaudeamus Restaurant), where prices are a little higher.

The Botanical Garden of Iaİi belongs to the patrimony of Alexandru Ioan Cuza University. It was set up by the physician and natural scientist Anastasie F tu in 1856. It was the first botanical garden in Romania where students could do practical work and research. Since 1963 the Botanical Garden is located in the north-west of the city, on the western side of the Copou Hill, and has a surface of 100 ha.

Every year in October, on the occasion of the City of Iaİi Festival and of the Dies Academicus of Alexandru Ioan Cuza University, the Botanical Garden organises the —Autumn Flowers“ Exhibition: chrysanthema, ornamental plants, bonsai, useful plants, carnivore plants, and flower arrangements. Its scientific activities are developed by two —satellite“ botanical gardens, both also belonging to the patrimony of Alexandru Ioan Cuza University: one in the Carpathian Mountains (at Potoci-Bicaz, District of NeamI) and one at the Black Sea (Agigea, District of ConstanIa). The Botanical Garden is open for visitors all year long.

6 Part 2: ERASMUS INFORMATION

PRE-ARRIVAL ADVICE

At least two months before you leave your home university, you should contact the Erasmus Faculty Coordinator from Alexandru Ioan Cuza University in order to inform him/her about your coming. It is with the Faculty Coordinator that you must discuss the details related to the courses you are going to choose and to your study programme in general. You must also get in contact with the Erasmus Officer of Alexandru Ioan Cuza University, who will help you with any practical information concerning registration, accommodation, travel to Iaİi, Romanian language courses, and any question or problem you may have related to your Erasmus mobility.

Make sure that:

• You faxed or mailed to the Erasmus Office of Alexandru Ioan Cuza University the required application forms: Student Application Form; Learning Agreement; Accommodation Form. • You got your transcript of records from your home faculty (you will need it for registration at Alexandru Ioan Cuza University). • You got a letter from the coordinator or from the International Relations Office of your home university, stating your name, your field of study, and your period of study in Iaİi. • You told the Erasmus officer of Alexandru Ioan Cuza University the exact day and time of your arrival in Iaİi. • You know what documents you will be requested when back to your home institution.

Do not leave your arrangements until the last minute. It is very important that you get in touch with the coordinator and the Erasmus Office of Alexandru Ioan Cuza University at least two months before your arrival in Iaİi.

ROMANIAN LANGUAGE COURSES

The Department of Romanian Language for Foreign Students of our Faculty of Letters organises, with European Commission funding, two EILC (Erasmus Intensive Language Courses) per academic year: between August 1st œ September 18th and between January 22nd œ February 16th. The Department of International Relations of your home University must undertake an official application procedure for your participation in the EILC course. ÷ Beside EILC courses, further Romanian intensive language courses are organised for the foreign Erasmus students both in the 1st semester (October 1st œ December 15th) and in the 2nd semester (March 1st œ May 15th). You are registered for this course without sending a special application. The course is free of charge and is generally appreciated by guest students for its 6 credits and for the possibility it offers them to know each other and to quickly integrate among Romanian students. At the end of the course you are delivered a language certificate mentioning the number of credits awarded.

8 EXTRA MURAL ACTIVITIES

- SITE VISITS Together with your tutors, you will visit the most important monuments of art in Iaİi, as well as the most important religious sites. Iaİi is extremely rich in religious monuments of all ages, from the Middle Ages (the ”embroidered‘ Church of the Three Hierarchs) to the modern times (the Metropolitan Church). Trips will be organised to all sites of tourist attraction in which you will be interested. You will also visit the beautiful sites around the city (Ciric lake and forest; Birnova, Bucium and Poieni Forests).

Trips will be organized to the famous chain of monasteries in Northern Moldavia. Most of these are painted monasteries dating back to the 15th œ 16th centuries. To give just a few examples:

- the Monastery of Voronet is unique in the world due to the mysterious origin of its deep- blue colour and to the painting of the —Last Judgement“ on its western exterior wall; - the Monastery of Putna has a powerful symbolical meaning for the Romanian people because it was built by the most famous Moldavian ruler, Stefan cel Mare (Stephen the Great), whose grave is also at Putna; - the Monasteries of Sucevita, Moldovita, Dragomirna, Arbore, Bistrita, Agapia, Varatec and many others are all beautifully-painted unique monuments of art and religion.

13 TRAVEL TO IASI

Your place of arrival in Romania will be, most likely, the Otopeni Airport near Bucharest. You can take a taxi/bus from the airport to the North Railway Station (Gara de Nord) in Bucharest, from where all the trains to Iasi leave. There are several trains every day from Bucharest to Iasi. The best choice, due to the comfort provided, would be the InterCity (IC) train. The trip takes about 6 hours by the InterCity (IC) and about 7 hours by the Rapid (R) or Accelerate (Acc) trains. Prices: InterCity: (single class) 55 RON (550.000 old lei) (approx. 16 EUR) Rapid: 2nd class: 50.8 RON (508.000 old lei) (approx. 15 EUR) 1st class: 74 RON (740.ooo old lei) (approx. 21 EUR) Accelerate: 2nd class: 37.1 RON (371.000 old lei) (approx. 11 EUR) 1st class: 58 lei (580.000 old lei) (approx. 17 EUR) For information about the train schedule you can visit www.infofer.ro.

TIPS: - It is advisable to take a taxi that is registered with any taxi company and not a private one (even if it bears the label —taxi“) from the airport to the railway station. - It is always advisable to buy a 1st class train ticket. Train schedule can suffer small changes every year, so it is better to buy a ticket directly from the railway station and not to make a reservation before arrival.

If you decide to take the plane, you should know there are three airline companies that have flights to Iasi: Tarom Air Transport (www.tarom.ro), Carpatair (www.carpatair.ro), and Austrian Airlines (www.austrianairlines.ro). Tarom Air Transport has two internal flights per day. The trip from Bucharest to Iasi takes about one hour. If your flight to Iasi is part of an international Tarom flight (for example, Rome-Bucharest-Iasi), the trip Bucharest-Iasi will be free of charge. Carpatair has one internal flight per day, from Monday to Saturday. International Carpatair flights only come from Italy (cities: Torino, Bologna, Florence, Milano, Rome, Venice, Verona, Ancona) and from Germany (cities: Dusseldorf, Munchen, Stuttgart). You will have one stop and plane change in Timisoara. Austrian Airlines has one flight per day from Vienna to Iasi directly. TIPS: When you reach Bucharest (Henri Coanda International Airport) and you must change planes for Iasi, you must pick up your luggage and do the check-in again. Also, it is advisable to buy your plane ticket from a tourist agency, where you can be advised about the lowest prices and the most convenient flights.

A third possibility to reach Iasi is the minibus (maxi-taxi). There are several minibus stations near the North Railway Station (Gara de Nord) in Bucharest. There are at least 4 trips to Iasi organised per day. The ticket is 35 RON (350.0000 old lei) (approx. 10 EUR). The trip takes about 6 hours. TIPS: If you have a lot of luggage, the trip by minibus is less recommended, especially if there are many passengers.

14 ACCOMODATION

Our University offers accommodation for the Erasmus students in Gaudeamus Centre for International Exchanges (17 Codrescu Street, tel.: 0040 232 201701, administrator: Mrs. Teodora TANASA). The —Gaudeamus“ Centre is situated in the campus, within walking distance from the main University Building, the University Library, and Titu Maiorescu Students‘ Canteen. Places are available in double or triple rooms, fully furnished, including a TV set and a refrigerator. Each room has a private bathroom and a little balcony. Access to the Internet is possible if you make a special request and pay 5 EUR/month. On each floor there is a kitchen fully equipped for cooking. Laundry can be done at request and free-of-charge. The accommodation fee to be paid is 175 EUR/month for a place in a double room or in a triple room. It is not possible to choose a single room. For accommodation periods shorter than one month the fee to be paid is 15 EUR/night for a place in a double room or in a triple room. However, if you are accommodated for at least two full months, any extra period shorter than one month is charged 5.8 EUR/night. In order to arrange for your accommodation in this hostel (actually a two-star hotel) you are kindly asked to fill in the reservation form for student accommodation (see below), mentioning the date and hour of your arrival in Iaİi and if you prefer to share a double or a triple room. On arrival you will be given the key to your room from the Reception Desk, which is open 24 hrs./day.

CLIMATE

The Romanian climate is generally characterised by hot summers and cold winters. In winter the average temperature is usually of -5ºC to -10ºC, but it can sometimes go down to -20ºC, rarely lower. Cold days may even start from November, so if you come as an Erasmus student in the 1st semester, be sure to bring along a warm coat and at least one very warm sweater. In summer, days are fairly hot (around +30ºC), but temperatures can easily reach +35ºC or even more. In the spring and autumn months, temperature varies between 5ºC - 20ºC and the weather can be very rainy. If you come as an Erasmus student in the 2nd semester, you may need to bring along some winter clothes (winter may finish only in April), a rain coat for the spring days, and also summer clothes (in some years the passage from winter to summer is rather abrupt). If possible, you should include these clothing items in your basic wardrobe. Of course, you can also buy them in Iaİi, where you will find the prices much lower than in your country.

REGISTRATION AT THE FACULTY

At the beginning of the academic year (in October) or at the beginning of the second semester (in February) you are registered temporarily, for one or two semesters, at the faculty that has an Erasmus bilateral contract with your home faculty. The following documents are required:

° your transcript of records from your home faculty; ° your Learning Agreement signed by: the ECTS coordinators of your home faculty and university; by the ECTS coordinator of your host faculty, and by the ECTS institutional coordinator of Alexandru Ioan Cuza University; ° a copy of the first page of your passport; ° two ID photos.

∗ In Alexandru Ioan Cuza University the structure of each academic year is approved by the Senate Board only before the beginning of the respective academic year. Consequently, the above structure is estimative. However, the differences in structure between two consecutive academic years are usually very small (a few days). Exam session periods last for 2-3 weeks before the end of each semester. 17 After registration you receive: ° a student ID card (carnet de student) that is valid only for your Erasmus study period. The student card may be required in the University or in any other institution where student identity needs to be proved. You must use your student card during the session of exams, when each professor will write down, under signature, the grade you obtained in his/her exam. ° a travel card (legitima/ie de transport) that you can use when you buy train tickets and season tickets for buses/trams/trolley-buses. By showing your student travel card you can have a 50%-reduction of the price of these tickets. The faculty that registered you must provide you the same study conditions as for Romanian students: access to libraries, laboratories, reading rooms, Internet rooms. During your study mobility at Alexandru Ioan Cuza University of Iaİi, you have the same rights and obligations as the other students of the university, except the right to receive Romanian government scholarships.

THE RESIDENCE PERMIT

Since January 2001 citizens of the Schengen countries no longer need a visa to enter Romania. However, if you stay longer than 90 days you need to get a residence permit from the Romanian police authorities. The following documents are required:

° your passport; ° a copy of two pages of your passport: the first page (with your photo and personal data) and the page with the latest Romanian border stamp; ° an official proof of accommodation (original + one copy): if you live in the —Gaudeamus“ Centre for International Exchanges, you can ask for an accommodation certificate from the Administrator; if you live in a flat in the city, you need to show the lodging contract that you signed with the owner; ° two ID photos; ° three receipts acknowledging the payment of the following taxes: 1. Tax of 394.25 lei for the residence permit; This tax must be paid in lei at Casa de Economii İi Consemna/iuni œ C.E.C. (Savings and Deposits Bank): Str. Part 3: INFORMATION ABOUT THE CITY

THE CITY OF IASI Iaİi has stood for centuries as the most important political, economic, social and cultural centre north-east of Romania. Owing to its location, Iaİi was the crossroads for the main trade routes coming from Poland, Hungary, Russia and Constantinople. The first written evidence of the economic importance of Iaİi and also of its very existence comes from a 1408 charter by which the Moldavian ruler Alexandru cel Bun (Alexander the Good) granted commercial privilege to the Polish merchants of Lvov. On the other hand, the same geographical location proved disadvantageous from a military point of view: the town and the whole region had to face innumerable attacks especially of the Tatars and Turks. A 15th-century Moldavian ruler, long-celebrated for his courage (he won over 40 battles) and for his religiousness (after each battle he had a monastery built) was Stefan cel Mare (Stephen the Great), a name you will find in many institution and street appellations. At the middle of the 16th century Iaİi became the capital of Moldova (Moldavia) and witnessed, for the next three centuries, some of the greatest historical events. The first, though short, union of the three Romanian historical provinces was sanctioned in Iaİi in 1600. The famous 1848 Revolution, which was to spread all over the country, burst out here. Iaİi was also the place where the first Romanian higher education institution was founded, Academia Mihaileana, and the first newspaper in Romanian was issued. The picturesque position of Iasi, its spreading over seven hills, determined the Italian Marco Bandini (1644) to call it ”a new Rome‘. Stylish, cosy and richly rewarding, Iaİi is brimming with history and art. The impressive number of interacting scientific and cultural institutions (six universities, over sixty schools and high schools, a branch of the Romanian Academy with several research institutes, two theatres, an opera, a philharmonic, dozens of museums and art galleries, libraries, several publishing houses, many radio and TV stations, cultural centres of main European countries, all in a 500,000-inhabitant town) explain why Iaİi is considered to be ”the cultural capital city of Romania‘, as it was named for the first time at the inauguration of our University in 1860.

LOCAL TRANSPORT SYSTEM

Iaİi has a good local transport system: trams, buses, minibuses and trolley-buses. Tickets cost 10000 lei (about 0.25 EUR) for one trip. There is also a very good private transport system with minibuses (maxi-taxi) and the price for one ticket is the same.

SPORTS FACILITIES

ENTERTAINMENT

Iasi is considered to be the first and the oldest cultural capital of modern Romania, playing host to unique monuments of art (The Palace of Culture, The National Theatre, The Philharmonic, The Opera House, The Trei Ierarhi Church). With its more than 200 monuments of architecture and art (both religious and laic), museums, memorial houses, theatres, art galleries, parks, a Botanical Garden, Iaİi is a museum in itself, ranking among the most attractive tourist sites of Romania. The usual museum visit hours are between 10 a.m œ 5 p.m.//9 a.m.-3 p.m., from Tuesday to Sunday. Between September and July, there are 10 shows staged every week (except on Wednesdays) in the two halls of —Vasile Alecsandri“ National Theatre; the programme is changed every two weeks. The same schedule applies for the —Moldova“ Philharmonic Orchestra of Iasi. In the three main cinemas of the city, the latest films are on at each cinema for one week. All the year long there are a lot of concerts of famous Romanian singers and bands in the main discos of Iasi. There is a wide range of restaurants, cafes and pubs, and Internet cafes all over the city. The Students‘ House (Casa Studentilor) organises conferences, shows, symposia, literary and musical evenings, theatre plays staged by students, meetings with artists and scientists. You also have the possibility to participate in the various programmes organised by the French and German Cultural Centers and by the British Council, which are all very close to the University main building.

An architectural symbol of the city of Iasi, the Palace of Culture was built between 1906 and 1925 on the ruins of the 15th-century princely court. The very imposing and beautiful building of the Palace is considered to be the most successful Neo-Gothic architectural creation in Romania and, at the same time, one of the last masterpieces of the Romantic style in Europe.

Nowadays the Palace of Culture houses four important museums: the History Museum of Moldavia, the Ethnographic Museum of Moldavia, the Art Museum, and the Science and Technology Museum. The most famous room is the Princes‘ Hall, 1st floor, where visitors can admire the portraits of the most important Moldavian princes and of the Romanian kings (the Hohenzollern Dynasty), and painted in —medallions“. Also, a legend was created on the 365 rooms of the Palace corresponding to the number of days in a year. In the central tower of the Palace of Culture there is a carillon clock, formed of eight bells that play every hour the Romanian Union Song of 1859 (Hora Unirii). In front of the Palace there is the equestrian statue of Stefan cel Mare, flanked by two Krupp cannons donated by King Carol I at the inauguration of the statue in 1883. The Palace also houses the —Gheorghe Asachi“ Public Library of Iaİi.

The National Theatre of Iaİi was built between 1894-1896 and was inaugurated on December 2nd, 1896. Its rich ornaments, typical of the Baroque style, make it sometimes the most appreciated architectural Baroque creation in Romania. The beautiful show hall, with a capacity of 1,000 places, offers a sense of elegance, intimacy and enchantment, and has very good acoustics. During the First World War, the hall housed the Romanian Parliament sessions (1916-1918). It is also here that opera shows are staged. In 1957 the theatre was renovated and, on the occasion of the celebration of 140 years from the first theatre show in the Romanian language staged in Iaİi, it was named after Vasile Alecsandri (19th-century playwright).

The Metropolitan Cathedral Bd. Stefan cel Mare İi Sfânt, nr. 46 The Metropolitan Cathedral of Iaİi, the largest in the country, was built between 1833-1839. The present shape of the building is due to King Carol I of Hohenzollern who, in 1881 (the year when Romania became a kingdom), decided to have the cathedral rebuilt after the fall of its huge cupola. Both inside and outside, the building is richly decorated in the Baroque style. In 1888, after the fire at the Trei Ierarhi Church, the precious relics of Saint Parascheva were brought into the new cathedral. St. Parascheva is the patron saint of the city of Iaİi and is celebrated on 14 October every year. This is one of the greatest religious celebrations in north- eastern Romania. For one week around the date of 14 October, the number of inhabitants in Iaİi doubles or even triples, due to the large number of people coming from all over Romania to attend the special religious service and to touch the relics of the Saint. It is a unique event that should not be missed by any visitor to Iaİi.

—Three Hierarchs“ (Trei Ierarhi) Church Bd. ğtefan cel Mare İi Sfânt, nr. 62 This church owes its fame to the extraordinary stone embroidery that decorates its exterior walls. There are over 30 styles of decorative patterns and they are all unrepeatable.

24 The occidental architectural styles (Gothic, Renaissance) combine with oriental ones (of Armenian, Georgian, Persian, Arab, and Ottoman inspiration), in a very daring conception, whose result is however a very harmonious creation. The church has the shape and the look of a casket for relics, specially conceived to house the relics of Saint Parascheva (1641). The church was built between 1633-1642 and restored between 1884-1904. Inside there is also the tomb of Alexandru Ioan Cuza, the first prince of the 1859 Romanian Union.
