Please inquire! © International Odonatological Foundation S.I.O., Bergen/LB (including the Odonatological Abstracts) Odonatologica 42(4): 285-292 December 1, 2013 EDITORIAL AT THE CONCLUSION OF FOUR DECADES OF EDITORSHIP (1971-2013) In October 1971, I was entrusted by the participants of the First European Sym- posium of Odonatology (Ghent, Belgium) with the organisation and editorship of ODONATOLOGICA. This was to appear quarterly and include, in addition to research papers, the abstracts of contemporary odonatological literature published elsewhere. With the present issue, the 42nd volume is completed: the 168 issues contain about 1400 research papers and over 19,800 abstracts of works published through- out the world since 1971. The editing and the intensive daily contacts with the odonatological community became my life style, bringing much pleasure and many personal friendships. It was not easy, and with much sorrow and regret, that I had to decide to resign from the office upon the completion of the current volume: the advancing age is being increas- ingly felt and my health condition is not optimal any more. I trust the world odonatological community will share my feelings of thanks to Dr Florian WEIHRAUCH (Jägerstrasse 21/A, D-85283 Wolnzach, Germany; 1 [email protected]) for his acceptance of the responsibilities for the journal, its administration, production, editorship and circulation as from the 43rd volume onwards. With his profound experience in worldwide scientific communica- tion and odonatological editorship, he is perfectly qualified to navigate the journal on the waves of contemporary scientific requirements and standards and to guide it to an increasingly high scientific level. Since the birth of ODONATOLOGICA, two people have been crucial for its de- velopment: without the support and much more than the manifold help from the late Professor Dr Janny M. van BRINK (Utrecht/Bilthoven, The Netherlands) and my wife, MARIANNE, it would have been unthinkable to continue in the office for so long. For some decades, Marianne has been the backbone of the SIO and ODO- NATOLOGICA, taking care of all the technical matters and much more. Likewise, since the very first issue until today, the editorial help rendered by Dr Peter J. MILL (Leeds, UK) has been indispensable. There is hardly an issue in the production of which he has not been involved, either as a peer reviewer, style model- 286 B. Kiauta ler or a language corrector. Kiyoshi INOUE’s (Osaka, Japan) and Professor Dr Minter J. WESTFALL’s (Gainesville/FL, USA) manifold help and continuous encouragement during the four decades were among the cor- nerstones of much of my work. In recent years, my son, Adjunct Professor Dr George KIAUTA- -THUCYDIDES (Vancouver, Cana- da) opened new horizon by managing the website and the electronic edition of the journal. E-mails: [email protected] & [email protected] 2 University of 08 mai 1945, Guelma, Algeria 3 Biology Department, University of Annaba, Annaba, Algeria RÉSUMÉ.— Facteurs environnementaux influençant les communautés d’Odonates de trois rivières méditerranéennes : les oueds Kebir-Est, Seybouse et Rumel, nord-est algérien.— Les Odonates sont une composante importante des peuplements des milieux lotiques et leur abondance et diversité renseignent sur l’intégrité écologique de ces hydrosystèmes. L’inventaire odonatologique de trois oueds majeurs algériens : Kebir- Est, Seybouse et Rhumel, a permis l’identification de 40 espèces. Nos résultats révèlent la présence de Calopteryx exul, endémique maghrébin, dans l’oued Seybouse et semblent confirmer l’extinction de la population type dans l’oued Rhumel où l’espèce avait été découverte au XIXe siècle. Nos résultats indiquent également l’expansion de plusieurs espèces: Coenagrion caerulescens, Orthetrum nitidinerve, Trithemis kirbyi et Urothemis edwardsii dont la population relictuelle est en danger critique d’extinction. La mesure de diverses variables physicochimiques (altitude, température, conductivité, etc.) nous a permis d’explorer une possible co-structure entre les jeux de données faunistiques et de variables environnementales. L’analyse des données indique que la richesse spécifique est, selon l’oued, variablement correlée à l’hydropériode, à la conductivité et à la température de l’eau, suggérant son utilité dans l’évaluation de l’intégrité écologique des cours d’eau méditerranéens.

    ABSTRACT Gregarine Parasitism in Dragonfly Populations of Central Texas with an Assessment of Fitness Costs in Erythemis simplicicollis Jason L. Locklin, Ph.D. Mentor: Darrell S. Vodopich, Ph.D. Dragonfly parasites are widespread and frequently include gregarines (Phylum Apicomplexa) in the gut of the host. Gregarines are ubiquitous protozoan parasites that infect arthropods worldwide. More than 1,600 gregarine species have been described, but only a small percentage of invertebrates have been surveyed for these apicomplexan parasites. Some consider gregarines rather harmless, but recent studies suggest otherwise. Odonate-gregarine studies have more commonly involved damselflies, and some have considered gregarines to rarely infect dragonflies. In this study, dragonfly populations were surveyed for gregarines and an assessment of fitness costs was made in a common and widespread host species, Erythemis simplicicollis. Adult dragonfly populations were surveyed weekly at two reservoirs in close proximity to one another and at a flow-through wetland system. Gregarine prevalences and intensities were compared within host populations between genders, among locations, among wing loads, and through time. Host fitness parameters measured included wing load, egg size, clutch size, and total egg count. Of the 37 dragonfly species surveyed, 14 species (38%) hosted gregarines. Thirteen of those species were previously unreported as hosts. Gregarine prevalences ranged from 2% – 52%. Intensities ranged from 1 – 201. Parasites were aggregated among their hosts. Gregarines were found only in individuals exceeding a minimum wing load, indicating that gregarines are likely not transferred from the naiad to adult during emergence. Prevalence and intensity exhibited strong seasonality during both years at one of the reservoirs, but no seasonal trend was detected at the wetland.

Email: [email protected] Introduction Three families in the superfamily Calopterygoidea occur in China, viz. the Calo- pterygidae, Chlorocyphidae and Euphaeidae. They include numerous species that are distributed widely across South China, mainly in streams and upland running waters at moderate altitudes. To date, our knowledge of Chinese spe- cies has remained inadequate: the taxonomy of some genera is unresolved and no attempt has been made to map the distribution of the various species and genera. This project is therefore aimed at providing taxonomic (including on larval morphology), biological, and distributional information on the super- family in South China. In 2009, two series of surveys were conducted to Southwest China-Guizhou and Yunnan Provinces. The two provinces are characterized by karst limestone arranged in steep hills and intermontane basins. The climate is warm and the weather is frequently cloudy and rainy all year. This area is usually regarded as one of biodiversity “hotspot” in China (Xu & Wilkes, 2004). Many interesting species are recorded, the checklist and photos of these sur- veys are reported here. And the progress of the research on the superfamily Calopterygoidea is appended. Methods Odonata were recorded by the specimens collected and identified from pho- tographs. The larva of E. media can be distinguished from other species of Erythrodiplax by the presence of lateral spines on S8 and S9, the number of premental setae (n = 22), palpal setae (n = 7) and by the mandibular formula. We also provide a preliminary key to known South American larvae in the genus. The genus consists of many rather similar species, which makes diagnosis difficult.
