  • Heisler Geared Locomotive
True Sound Project for Zimo Sounds designed by Heinz Daeppen US Geared in the woods Page 1 01 20140514 Heisler Geared Locomotive Photo © Heinz Däppen Prototype information The Heisler locomotive was the last variant of the three major types of geared steam locomotive, Charles L. Heisler receiving a patent for the design in 1892 following the construction of a prototype in 1891. Somewhat similar to a Climax locomotive, Heisler's design featured two cylinders canted inwards at a 45 degree angle to form a 'vee-twin' arrangement. Power then went to a longitudinal driveshaft that drove the outboard axle on each powered truck. The inboard axle on each truck was then driven from the outboard one by external side (connecting) rods. The Heisler was the fastest of the geared steam locomotive designs, and yet was still claimed by its manufacturer to have the same low speed hauling ability. Heisler's were produced in both two and three truck variants in sizes ranging from 17 tons to 95 tons. Source: Wikipedia Sound project information The decoder is programmed for using motor informations to the virtual chufftrigger also operating the fan blowing smoker. The sound project is based on Zimo Advanced Standard. The decoder must have SW Version 33.14 or higher. The older MX 690 can operate this sound project, but the number of simultaneous auxiliary sounds is limited with these older decoders. Please operate the calibration run on a flat long track. Start with CV 302 Value 75 CVs 3, 4, 5, 57, 154 and 158 are important values for the sound project.

  • THE NORTH STAR CHRONICLES – a Newsletter Primarily for the Model Railway Fraternity
THE NORTH STAR CHRONICLES – a newsletter primarily for the model railway fraternity Volume 7 no 6 June 2019 Editor: David Cairns e-mail: [email protected] Website for back copies: [email protected] Phone: +27 82 653 5642 Editorial The feature article this month is the Dinorwic Slate Museum and associated Llanberis Lake Railway. Because of space considerations Gary Smith’s ‘fleshing out’ of his museum project will be held over until next month. National Slate Museum/Dinorwic quarry/Llanberis Railway By way of introduction, at the turn of the twentieth century, Wales had two main industries – coal mining and slate extraction. At their peaks the former industry employed some 270000 people at 620 mines and the latter 17000. These quantities do not include the large numbers of people involved in the industries serving coal and slate – rail and ship transport etc. Apart from a few scattered operations involving small numbers, both industries have effectively closed. The effect on employment numbers and the communities that depended on them was catastrophic. Today Wales, particularly the western, middle and north areas, is one large recreation area for tourists. When I was there, not hundreds but thousands of people could be seen hiking and riding the many narrow gauge lines that exist in Wales and that was in April when there was still snow on the hilltops! In other words the death of traditional industries has been replaced with a vibrant new industry – tourism. 1 The National Slate Museum is located at Gilfach Ddu, Llanberis, in the disused workshops of the Dinorwic quarry.

BTK 3669 to become a theatre Those of you who study every word of Moors Line will have noticed on page 63 of Issue 191 that it is planned to use a 1930’s carriage during Wartime Weekend to perform a play called ‘Bomb Happy’. The carriage in question is of course BTK3669, whose brake van area has been deemed suitable to be used as a small theatre. The owners of BTK3669 are delighted that it is going to be used for this purpose, as it is another opportunity to raise the profile of the Association. A Puzzle Picture Dave Cullingworth recently spotted a print of the photo below of a Howlden ECJS or GN clerestory coach, photographed in its later years as departmental No. 961503, for sale on E-bay. It raises some questions—can anyone help with the answers? What is obviously unusual about this coach is that it has had an underframe change -it is on a Gresley angle-trussed underframe with the characteristic clipped-head buffers. It couldn’t have received this earlier than the early 1930s when these were introduced. Why would such an elderly vehicle have a replacement underframe relatively late in its life? Any accident damage sufficient to write off an underframe Newsletter No. 106 August 2016 probably wouldn’t have done the body it carried much good either! If you know of any information surrounding this mystery we would love to be enlightened! 15 LNERCA TRUSTEES. • Hampshire Area Garden Railway Group
Hampshire Area Garden Railway Group (Incorporating the Hampshire area of the Association of 16mm Narrow Gauge Modellers and the Southdown Railway Co.) Associate members of Fareham & District Model Railway Club July 2015 Hello Everyone: Here we go with the July 2015 Newsletter. Pretty short newsletter this month as I’ve been out playing trains in the sunshine. Aside from the progress on the CSLR which now boasts a complete circuit of the garden, ballasting and track fixing/fettling moves forwards and I’ve been able to run a steam train for the first time in 20 months. We travelled with a contingent to visit Ralf Műhlbichler and his 45mm gauge line, the photos show the variety of stock we were able to run. Ralf models in 7/8th’s scale and his engines and stock are therefore much modified but very finely detailed. The first picture shows his BO-BO diesel which features radio control and sound and you may be able to see in the picture that the driver in the cab always faces the direction of travel thanks to some clever servery and linkages. Ralf says the driver is very accommodating although he always answers questions with a “No”… You can also see a Regner 0-6-0 tender loco altered to suit 7/8th’s and detailed tipper cars made by Ralf for his feldbahn. This loco has a modified Regner boiler and burner to suit the model which took some work to get the burner stable but now produces plenty of steam. The visitors (ie us) took along examples of 1:22.5 scale in the form of a Regner Hartz 2-10-2 with detailed LGB/Chinese stock - these have had scale bogies and wheels fitted, the Chinese coaches being resprayed and custom decals applied.

file IL COMBO v2 for PDF.doc updated 13-12-2006 THE INDUSTRIAL LOCOMOTIVE The Quarterly Journal of THE INDUSTRIAL LOCOMOTIVE SOCIETY COMBINED INDEX of Volumes 1 to 7 1976 – 1996 IL No.1 to No.79 PROVISIONAL EDITION www.industrial-loco.org.uk IL COMBO v2 for PDF.doc updated 13-12-2006 INTRODUCTION and ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS This “Combo Index” has been assembled by combining the contents of the separate indexes originally created, for each individual volume, over a period of almost 30 years by a number of different people each using different approaches and methods. The first three volume indexes were produced on typewriters, though subsequent issues were produced by computers, and happily digital files had been preserved for these apart from one section of one index. It has therefore been necessary to create digital versions of 3 original indexes using “Optical Character Recognition” (OCR), which has not proved easy due to the relatively poor print, and extremely small text (font) size, of some of the indexes in particular. Thus the OCR results have required extensive proof-reading. Very fortunately, a team of volunteers to assist in the project was recruited from the membership of the Society, and grateful thanks are undoubtedly due to the major players in this exercise – Paul Burkhalter, John Hill, John Hutchings, Frank Jux, John Maddox and Robin Simmonds – with a special thankyou to Russell Wear, current Editor of "IL" and Chairman of the Society, who has both helped and given encouragement to the project in a myraid of different ways. None of this would have been possible but for the efforts of those who compiled the original individual indexes – Frank Jux, Ian Lloyd, (the late) James Lowe, John Scotford, and John Wood – and to the volume index print preparers such as Roger Hateley, who set a new level of presentation which is standing the test of time.

  • 1 a New Age of Steam?
A new age of steam? The Tua Valley Line, Portugal - Experience and Examples from the Technological Heritage Operations and Preserved Railways of Britain. Dr Dominic Fontana Department of Geography, University of Portsmouth, United Kingdom [email protected] The railways of Portugal are well known to a global community of steam enthusiasts, many of whom used to visit the country specifically to experience and photograph the last days of steam traction until as late as the 1980s. The narrow gauge lines north of the Douro River, and the Tua Valley line in particular, were considered as very special railways. Their outstanding combination of narrow gauge steam traction, relatively long runs of track and extraordinarily beautiful landscapes, made for a magical railway experience. In the 1980s steam was replaced with diesel traction and although there are now regular but infrequent steam hauled tourist trains on the Douro Valley line, there are currently very limited opportunities for people to recapture this experience. Portugal has several railway museums including the excellent National Railway Museum in Entroncamento, but these present static displays rather than “live” steam and many railway enthusiasts consider this to be a poor substitute for the “real” thing where steam locomotives are operating in steam, within a fully-fledged railway environment. 0189 2-8-4T Henschel 1925 Mallet locomotive at Regua. 1 Portugal possesses over 100 redundant steam locomotives (Bailey, 2013) dispersed in yards around its national railway network, some of them remain potentially usable and many are certainly restorable to full operating condition. Portugal also possesses track and routes, which have been recently closed to passenger and freight traffic.

This filming was obviously subject to social distancing requirements and risk assessments were undertaken prior to it taking place. The video that was created from this activity then formed the basis of an online webinar and Q&A session on 23rd April with representatives of the railway industry including Network Rail, a potential user of this technology.
