Weights and measures in the Norman-Swabian kingdom of Sicily 253 Mario Rosario Zecchino Index 267 vi Editors’ preface is volume developed out of meetings between the three editors during the Battle Conference on Anglo-Norman Studies held at Bayeux in July and afterwards in Caen and elsewhere. e aim was always to bring together scholars from dierent countries with an interest in the history of the Normans and to create dialogues between them. e ambition became a reality when Professor Ortensio Zecchino invited us to organize two conferences, the rst of which he would host at the Centro Europeo di Studi Normanni in Ariano Irpino from to September and the second of which would be held at Emmanuel College, Cambridge, from to March . It was decided at the beginning that the conferences would have the specic theme of cultural transmission across and within the Norman worlds and that they would be interdisciplinary in approach. e organizers are grateful to Ortensio Zecchino for all the support he has given to the conferences and to the sta of the Centro Europeo di Studi Normanni for making the time spent there such an enjoyable one. e conference at Emmanuel College received nancial support from the Master and Fellows of Emmanuel College, from the Trevelyan Fund of the Faculty of History of the University of Cambridge, and from the School of History of the University of East Anglia. We must express our warmest thanks to Dr. Helen Carron and Dr. Julie Barrau for the organization of an exhibition of the medieval manuscripts of Emmanuel College in the College Library, to Professor Sir John Baker for allowing us to exhibit a selection of his horse harness pendants on the same occasion, and to Emily Ward who as a student assistant helped enormously with the logistics of the Cambridge conference. ere were several scholars who contributed papers or talks to the two conferences but who, for various reasons, were unable to include them in the published volume. ey are David Abulaa, Julie Barrau, Armando Bisanti, Errico Cuozzo, Lindy Grant, Tom Licence, Giuseppe Mastrominico, Paul Oldeld, Anna Laura Trombetti, and Jolando Ventura, all of whom played their part in making the conferences such friendly and stimulating occasions. Our nal thanks must be to Professor Lawrence Goldman and Professor Jane Winters for ensuring that this remarkable trilingual volume would be accepted for publication by the Institute of Historical Research in an appropriate form and to Julie Spraggon, Emily Morrell, and Jessica Davies Porter for their exemplary editorial work. Finally, many thanks to Derwin Gregory for his help in preparing the index. vii List of contributors S J B is Emeritus Downing Professor of the Laws of England at the University of Cambridge, and writes on legal history.

  • Exploring the Relationship of Pitched Percussion to the Rock Band and the Traditions of the Rock Drummer
“THE GUY THAT HANGS AROUND WITH THE MUSICIANS” Exploring the Relationship of Pitched Percussion to the Rock Band and The Traditions of the Rock Drummer by Tom Atherton Brunel University, 2020 1 ABSTRACT This research explores the integration of tuned percussion into the rock band framework with the emphasis on creating innovative approaches as a composer and performer. The portfolio of audio/ video recordings, scores and commentary will explore; 1) The roles of the rock drummer and percussionist 2) New composition and performance techniques for percussion within rock 3) Challenging the identity of rock music This portfolio is a combination of several smaller practical projects designed around the parameters of; - Ensemble size - Instrumentation - Tuned vs untuned percussion It has been undertaken by a practitioner who works across the disciplines of rock drumming, orchestral percussion and free improvisation. As such, it places them in an unusual, interesting and unique position whereby elements of each framework blend and permeate into one another, both on conscious and subconscious levels. Such a position enables the practitioner to effectively view and analyse multiple, disparate musical spheres and create new work at their meeting points, as well as venture into the previously unexplored gaps in between. 2 1. These and" other alterations, including the division of the matter into chapters, together with the addition of an Index, and occasional notes, giving the more recent dates of the publication of works referred to in the text, will, it is hoped, be found to have increased the value of Mr. Thorpe's Translation.
